I'm In-between dsl providors - (going from NS to Eircom) so back to dial up in the interm. So for comparison to the above I present the following:

Dialup - US Robotics 56K hardware internal modem via Indigo subscription account.
Connected at 24K (best I can get)

    Well sort of.

The Solo connection I had was:

    * Not compatible with my modem (Actiontec Wireless gateway)
    * Higher pings than eircom (verified on same line).
    * Lower Speeds than eircom (verified on same line)
    * Would not let me log into www.365online.com
    * 12 euros more expensive per month
    * Cannot access my eircom hosted sites

My downloads arent that high - but I like it fast- and the
current Eircom offer looked good (xbox+games, modem,
    1 free month, lower cost)

I paid the extra 50 Euros(inc vat) to get a static IP address
from eircom - as that was useful.

Funny thing about the modem - Tech support said I'd have to buy
a different one - apparently it works with the higher priced NS account
    - but not the solo (hack was to use it in bridging winxp dialup mode).
    Works fine with Eircom.

The 365online thing was strange - worked when I dialed into eircom
but not NS solo. Just hung always.

I do loose the Domain Name and the higher cap though... :dunno:

I've had a cable modem for 3 years and they recently upgraded capacity dramatically.

I downloaded windows media player 9 yesterday and had a transfer rate of 500KB per sec which works out at 4 Mbps. Now that's what I call Broadband ! Check out www.cablesurf.com
    :)

    Me too.....

Slightly off the point, but is Dungarvan not one of those towns that are getting one of those Government sponsored fibre networks. Seems like a complete waste of money seeing as cablesurf are doing the business already... Government waste money.......never !!!!!!!

Only since the weekend - IBB has been like this for us. Really painful to use
the web - pages take minutes to download.
Download speeds are terrible with lots of stuff just giving up and
not downloading at all. - Maybe the recent bad weather has moved our ariel??

The ones to jolt drop to below 120 at night. I'm on 56k
Dl speeds are avg of 5.5k during the day. Upto 7 at times. Big difference from the 200k I get in work. Roll on BB

Id stick with the 56k m8.

Here are my pings from NS last night.

    netsource_2.gif

    Netsource 512/128.

The ping spikes in game (40-50 more than dos ping) go from 90-250+, try sniping with 150+ pings :D There is also intermittant packet loss, which makes online games lag and jump.

This is the results from pinging www.jolt.co.uk every 15 seconds from 20:00 - 23:00, no downloading just playing TacticalOps (based on UT engine/ max 4-6k/sec) from 20:00 - 22:00, last hour just irc using the connection.

Whilst I get 45-50k downloads from good sites, the link is next to useless for playing games or using any time based applications (SSH or Video Conferencing).

Its been like this for the last couple of weeks, getting progressivly worse. We had the same problems in sept and july last year.

When its good its very good, when its bad its terrible.

those pings really look worrying. Everything I'd read had said that they had fixed their problems in regards pings. I will be doing a bit of work of vnc clients so spikes like that will suck. I'm hoping they fix it soon.

ja, good luck !! I had NS from March last year till about October. NS performance was up and down. As soon as you taught it was fixed, it was $hit again. Far too unreliable

Yeah - same here. Put your cancellation in Now - before you even get it installed :)

Really - NS told me that I could Cancel a Cancellation two weeks before they pulled the plug. I told them I would do this if their service got better - but it didnt - so now I 'belong' to Eircom .... 8-o

Pings - always the same and same as all other Eircoms...

I wanted esats business 512 line but cant get it because no exchange near here. NS is the only one thats close to that package. Eircoms only uncapped one is 169a month. Ok it's a meg line and if I get to that stage I prob will move but right now I aint so I'm hoping to get good pings on the line. I'll post them anyway when I get the line in.

I rang Irish Broadband to upgrade to Breeze Home from Ripwave. I was told that it would be between 6-10 weeks before they increased the user capacity on the Three Rock node, which is currently running at capacity.
After using Ripwave for the last couple of weeks, I have achieved downloads of upto 40K/sec from some sites, but not a whole lot. Online gaming (DoD on Steam) is a bit of a disaster to say the least! Latency of anywhere between 260ms - 500ms!! Probably to do with the contention ratio of 40:1. Breeze Home contention ratio is 20:1, so there should be some improvement there (hopefully).
Just have to wait and see I guess...

All run on IBB, using the 5.8ghz VL equipment. Read it and weep! 8-1 contention, EUR50 a month. Did i mention this connection is syncronous. i.e. full upload and download at the same time (see attachment)

In the attachment each vertical line represents a one minute interval. in order to keep the upload speed going, i had to keep re-uploading the same file, so it kept temporarily slowing down.
