I've noticed a definite increase in my pings.

Pinging clarity.jolt.co.uk [195.149.21.11] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 195.149.21.11: bytes=32 time=40ms TTL=57
    Reply from 195.149.21.11: bytes=32 time=46ms TTL=57
    Reply from 195.149.21.11: bytes=32 time=46ms TTL=57
    Reply from 195.149.21.11: bytes=32 time=46ms TTL=57

Used to be 30-32 just yesterday.

Download speeds remain the same but I only really care about those pings.

they are a little higher then mine alright, is it possible you could be quite a way from the exchange? how does distance affect pings? i'm using eircom's modem but via my ethernet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 413 ✭✭Skittle

Hey Dataisgod, a friend of mine just got Broadband and he's using the Eircom modem via USB. When he was trying to ping me (also on Eircom Broadband) he was getting 41ms which seems high. He can only get his modem to work (it's the Netopia one) via the USB connection, when he plugs in the Ethernet connection the modem won't connect. Is there something he has to configure on the modem to enable the Ethernet connection?

hi skittle i don't think i did anything special when connecting the modem to the ethernet, all i had to do was make sure that i had reenabled my lan port as i had it turned off as i didn't use it, so unless this is an issue..... i don't know what it could be

just looking at the manual does he get the green light for the ethernet link when he puts it in?

    data

whats difference between ethernet and usb cable? is ethernet meant to be better, lower pings etc than usb? can i just connect my modem with the ethernet cable or do i have to have sommet special in my pc?

With a USB connection the modem is controlled by software (drivers) running on your PC. This will use up resources, and can conflict with other hardware and other programmes running on the PC. Ethernet has been the de facto standard for networks for many years. The protocol is written into the core of every OS, so it does not require any drivers running on your PC. This means it is far more reliable.

To connect via ethernet you will need a network card. Look for an RJ-45 port at the back of your PC. If you don't have one, buying a card will only cost you under €20

cool, i'll try that, i dont have a network card but i'll get one and try it out then post my ping results to see if their lower than under usb.

Ping with eircom is also dependant on your distance to the exchange.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,940 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

im only 2km from the exchange, pings seem better today.

Be nice if there was some sort of automated statistics page for the pings so you could get the bigger picture of everyones pings for a given provider.
Sort of like the average of the averages..

I'm too lazy to code it my self..

why is it that different serviced providers end up with different pings on the same line?

i would consider those pings high compared to what i get on eircom

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,940 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

pings are always gonna be different from isp to isp on same line just as it is when you use dialup. It all depends on the isp's network quality etc. theres not alot of difference between eircom/iol-esatbt and netsource but utv's pings are usually more than double sometimes triple of everyone else's particularly to irish servers. The same goes for their 56k/isdn dialup also. Hopefully they'll get it sorted some day soon.

The other thing is that it's telling me I'm connected at 8Mbps. I putting this down to the same mysterious error that once told me I was connected at 130kbps on dial-up...
