    Anyone know if the following is (a) grammatically or (b) mathematically correct? Cheers.

    Le premier terme du quotient a pour coefficient le coefficient du premier terme du dividend.

    Un terme quelquonque du quotient a pour coefficient le terme précédent du quotient, multiplié par a, auquel on ajoute algèbréiquement le terme correspondant du dividend.

    well,
    first sentence, correct, first terms are the same for quotient and dividende.

    for the second sentence, i must admit have got prob to explain it in english. but seems logical too:)

    Well I think the principle is that if you multiply a polynomial by (x-a) then the nth power term of the answer is always made by subtractring the nth power term of the polynomial, multiplied by a, from the (n-1)th power term. Hence in reversing the procedure you can work your way along the dividend with each term you work out leaving just one unknown for the next.
