erm.. as the computer is booting up it should say on the screen "press DEL for setup/bios" or something...

just press DEL whenever it says that.. or whatever key it says to press

Settings that do not affect the OS stability are fine.
Especially those that speed booting up. (eg: memory test / floppy seek )

But those that could lead to lockups and reboots are not worth the hassle especially if the speed improvement does not make up for downtime.

note: many bioses have a setting to hide the Press XXXX to enter setup message..

    Try these also
DEL (try both delete keys - some keyboards a bit funny)
    F1
    F2 (esp. Note books)
    Ctrl-Alt-Esc
    Ctrl-Alt-Enter
FN + Setup (F2) (Some DELL Note books)

    Also
Press Esc - this may skip memory test or the pretty picture that hides all the messages -

    And if all else fails
the old favorite of keeping a key pressed in all the time and waiting for the "Keyboard error - Press XXXXX to enter setup." to appear ;)
