well to me sum41 are your basic pub band who made it big, they're just 4 lads out for a bit of craic and making music (not bad music either) . i've heard better versions of bells from my mates band, and elsewhere, but it was still a good attempt

    What did Sum41 play?
    I missed that...

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

they played "for whom the bell tolls"

    wasn't the worst :)

as for snoop dog... well i dunno really, I've always been a fan of artists trying something new and different.. and it was just a bit of fun. i'm not a fan of his at all, but I would listen to his "sad but true" before lavigne's fuel anywa..

Snoop dog was so hilarious, it lasted about 1 min. I didn't think Korn and Sum 41 were too bad, but the rest was just hideous.
That guy doing the comedy routine was vaguely amusing.
It sucked that metallica played a medley thing, i'd much prefer 1 song, and their new song sounded dodgy.

p.s. JAMES HETFIELD WAS PLAYING THE EXACT SAME GUITAR AS MINE ON THE NEW SONG AT THE END HOW COOL IS THAT?!?! ;)

personally i thought it was pretty good

staind ruined nothing else matters, its was boring as hell

    avril made me sleepy

korn and limp bizkit were suprisingly good i thought, i liked the version of one they played, and at fred durst made an effort - even if they couldnt manage the solo :p

the comedian guy was ****in hilarious...i was laughin my ass off

pity alot of the footage came from 'a year and a half in the life off...' which ive seen a million times, but oh well.

as for the new song, at first i didnt think that much off it, but ive been humming it for the last few days, really starting to grow on me...im really looking forward to seein em in the summer and the new album

oh and the new bassist is pretty good...even if he does look like a complete tool when on stage :p

    fine tunes.

im interested to hear waht robert trujillo sounds like. hes a hell of a better bassist than jason was (sorry jason) but going on infectious grooves and suicidal tendencies, i cant see where a bit of slap bass is going to fit into metallica's clean cut riff sound.
    interesting mr bond....

thought the comidian guy was hillariously unfunny... except for the impersonation of lars, he obviously must have seen the camp chaos cartoons :D

ye Sum41 werent actually that bad, but the whole thing was, as i said before, an attempt to "convert" Metallica fans to nu-metal.

Rob is a good bass player, but I cant help from cringing just looking at him do his spider-legs routine.

I didn't like his bass playing at all - I don't know much about bass tbh, but it sounded like goddamn primus or something, and as you say, his little "routines" were very cringe-inducing :)

This would have been posted by 120 Minutes, but since he has been banned, I agreed to post it instead.

*Disclaimer* I know this defeats the purpose of banning the headcase, but I do feel his personal opinion on this is as valid and worthy as the next persons. However, I do understand that by posting this leaves me open to reprimanding by AngelWhore, which I will submit to.

I switched it on after missing half an hour, so i didnt see all the acts, but here are my opinions on what i thought was one of the finest examples of embarrassing vomit inducing televison:

    1. Snoop Dogg doing sad but true: Has this mans career declined so much that he has now become a whore for MTV? "fo sho, nizzle, those tallica dawgs were the shiznit back in the day y'dig? be sure to chack out my new show dogydizzletelevissle on MTV"
Its almost enough for me to take "doggystyle" off my list of greatest hip hop albums.

    2. The onstage line up of "fans" asked to describe metallica in one word (most using a couple) one word: sickening.

    3. Korn doing one: not a bad attempt actually, passable even, feildy didnt even fúck it up that much, but with dissapointing sales of "untouchables" i can smell a certain cover version on their next "attempt" at an album before they're dropped. and i'm sure munky wouldn't tell MTV the story of when they toured with metallica circa 95/96 (i think) and i quote munky; "we didnt get on with metallica, kirk hammet was a total dick to me", no korns tongues are fitmly planted in metallicas asses just like everyone else.

    4. the ugly rocker guy/ cute model chick presenter team up: oh dear, the credibility/eye candy trade off didnt work this time MTV, sorry....

    5. Limp Bizkit doing sanitarium: would have been listenable if durst stayed at home posting "big up" messages on his own site, but i smell another cover version on their next album.

    6. the comedian guy: funny, ish. but by no means brilliant.

    7. new bassist bloke: ok respect to rob, but he doesnt deserve to be sitting in that balcony chair, at least put newstead sitting in a fifth chair, come on! at least he earned it? where was he? on a poxy video message , thats where. was dave mustaine outside selling t-shirts?

    8. Metallica themselves: ah yeah, came out to show us all how do to it, and did they? emmm sorta. the no brainer medley of hits to get the punters fired up before hitting us with a new song, which in my opinion is pretty average, so in fairness i'll suspend judgement on it till i DOWNLOAD it (yeah lars, come find me, fúcko) compared to all the other bands playing, metallica came off good, but then it wasnt really a challenge was it?

Read between the lines this was a very expensive ad for "st anger" , with a lot of guests saying they were influenced by metallica ever since they something to plug or are owned by MTV (avril and sum41 , i'm looking in ur direction)

    A fúcking corporate ad campagin

    for shame metallica, for shame!

Actually, I didn't even watch it, as I despise the whole MTV / Avril / Sum41 etc thing.

But I do know, that if I did watch it, I'd be bitching about it for months.

I find my life is better if I keep away from things that upset me.

Sum41 suprised the hell out of me, by actually playing the Master of Puppets solo. Fred Durst ruined an otherwise ok attempt at sanitarium. Korn's one was not bad, but the bass slapping in the intro was annoying, though it worked ok in the heavy part. Avril Lavigne......Uh...The drummer was good. Staind, though they didn't play the intro, bridge/interlude, or solo managed the guitar part, but I didn't like his nasal, constipated style of singing. Snoop Dogg: No. Just no. Metallica's medley was alright, though I would have prefered something more substancial than that taster. And the way they cut away during the new song was annoying.
Oh, and of course, this is just my opinion, I don't want any fights.

Personally, the whole thing made me sick to my stomach.
Seeing metallica sitting there,, while everyone stands around telling them how great they are, and how theyre the "kings of metal" made me want to gouge my eyeballs out with an eggspoon so id never have so sit through such tripe again. The whole thing just pointed out that, if it was actually possible to do so, metallica have sold out AGAIN. Remember load? Metallica does grunge by-the-numbers. No solos, short hair, lars uses a single bass drum kit..bleh. But now that its "cool" to be metal again, surprise surprise!!! Heres the all new metallica, complete with solos, and a double bass drum!! Durst himself could have probably come up with a better song. James was only short of "droppin some rhymes on yo ass, beeyatch!" Metallic ahave had their day. They used to be amazing, now theyre just sell outs. Cliff burton would be spinning in his grave.
    And kings of metal? SLAYER!

They have actually recorded that as a bonus track on their new album, "Gore Obsessed" by the way.
