Earthtone9 are quite brilliant indeed, but the rest are naff. I think most of the people here would agree there, and would have always, so its not just a trend.

The trend is nu-metal itself, and its a dying trend at that.

Id be the first one to put my hand up and admit i like a lot of bands that could be classed as "nu metal" I feckin love Deftones ,and to piss on them is pure ignorance as they are some of the most talented musicians ive heard in years. back to school was not about "ruling at school" by the way. Lost prophets have some ****ing excellent stuff, ill agree some of it is pap and they look like complete knobs. but if get hung up on how musicians look we'd all be listening to Pop.

Nu-metal sucks because it SUCKS! I don't feel like writing out my explanation for it sucking so bad right now. You can just look at some of the tabs for it and that explains most of it.

Some bands are lethal but the guitar isnt complex at all. Alot of bands try to write complex riffs that dont sound good at all they are just hard. You can give respect to a band that busted their asses off with their instruments but a band who write great songs and maybe dont include really complex riffs deserves more.

I think a lot of this bickerring and crap could be avoided if we weren't being so closed-minded in our opinions.

Giving out and saying that it sucks cos it's not technically brilliant is pure sh*t for example. Wes Borland is a fantastically brilliant musician. As are Head and Munky, Steven Carpenter etc. Even yer man out of Stone sour (not Jim from Slipknot the other dude) is good. He does all that shred sh*t and all.


What bombidol was saying about being childish is also true. It's not that this music is aimed at children, it's that ppl who defend to the death that "their" music is better than everybody elses are being childish.

About money? I'm afraid to say that's pretty much what all the music industry is about now.

Compare them to Trey Azagthoth, John Petrucci, Zakk Wylde, Michael Romeo, Jani Liimatainen, Rocky George, Dimebag Darrell, Alex Skolnick, Dave Mustaine, Marty Freidman, Jesper Stromblad, Mikael Akerfeldt and what do you get?

Listen, nu-metal is lazy music. There are 6 strings (even 7) on a guitar for a reason. Nu-metal guitarists seem to only know how to use three of them strings and the fact that they down tune to the last to try and make a song sound heavier is just stupid and lazy.

if you don't like the music and you're confident about the status of your own favourate genre of music then you should all live and let live. if nu metal can satisfy their own fans by producing music with insufficient amount of strings (even if we all think it's crap) then let them on, john lennon's music was simple and he is still regarded as a genius. On the other hand deftones cannot be compared to the likes of limp bizcuit and the likes who we may consider to be pop stars trying to get a metal image and failing badly, fred durst did prove himself to be talented in his appearances with stained

I actually like slipknot, as I said, not all nu metal is bad, just most of it, korn's 1st album had some half decent songs on it aswell.

There are some some and bands i can stand...i liked korn up until they released their new album..deftone's i DO NOT like at all.. if you listen to all the bands with the in the title such as the hive's and other they all suck horse cock..IMO

But korn hav gone down hill and if they dont get a new album out soon there goin lose alot of there fans because the last album sucked big time...

But hey if you want to listen to nu_metal or pop or whatever your into no-one is goin to stop you but people will give their opinion

Ok, I suppose giving a warning to keep things calm is a bit futile, as whenever there's a debate about nu-metal things re guaranteed to get heated...

So can we please leave any personal attacks at the door? Eg. Calling someone a ****ing idiot just because they dont agree with you.


Now, as for my view on Nu-metal...

I'm not saying that the whole of it is directed at kids (and by this I mean 16 and under, not 'bob the builder' age, as someone implied) so try not to put words in my mouth.

But as many of you will agree, nu-metal's main audience *IS* undenyably of the younger variety. And to be quite honest, most of them are just latching onto something that they are going to grow out of. This doesn't mean all of you here.

And I'm certainly not saying that all nu-metal is bad. Earthtone9 has already been mentioned, Medulla Nocte, Withering Surface, and I seem to remember The Workhorse Movement being quite good also. I even listened to Korn a few years back, and at the time, I did think they were quite good.


But I personally find that most nu-metal lyrics are very ego-centric, self-centred and utterly devoid of any real meaning other than selling a few albums to some bored suburban kids. Linkin Park is a good example.

Quite often the guitar playing is just down-tuned, over-distorted, and just kept no higher than the 5th fret. Although I would agree that there are some very good players in the genre... Wes Borland was already mentioned, and although I cant think of any names right now, there are quite a few others.


I think the main problem with nu-metal is that it does in fact contain a lot of dross, drivel and just all-out ****e... So much so that this does over-shadow some genuinely good music.

And, not particularly a critisism confined to nu-metal specifically, but I simply cannot listen to song that have those big buzz-word type choruses like "Let the bodies hit the floor!" or "We're disposable teens!" or "Born in a burial gown!"...

AW I think you forgot to give an opinion on the fact alot (not all, but most) nu-metal bands concentrate alot on their image, ie: the masks thing alot of bands are doing, Im not sure which one started it but theres a good few bands doing it now. Its got to the stage where image is as important as it is in pop music, the music doesnt mean much to alot of people as long as their 'cool'.

Back to the topic on hand, I am not a fan of Nu-metal generally. However there are some songs out there that are pretty good to listen to but not to analyse greatly, i.e lyrics, guitar complexity. I figure if you want rap in your music listen to rap, guitars = listen to rock, decks = dance. Don't try to mix them all together.
Another question, since nu-metal is relatively new it's fan-base is quite young. Since a lot of its fan-base or young there is also a lot of followers just because the fashion dictates so. What i am wondering is in a couple of years when these people have grown up and the fashion ones have moved on will we be left with 25 year old nu-metalers?

I'd doubt it somehow. At least when there were trends years ago, they actually appealed to a wider audience (grunge). People I know still are very much into grunge although they have moved on in their music tastes to something more mellow. I think lyrics play a big part in the crowd a band attracts.

I just think that people really SHOULD be free to listen to whatever they want. I mean, of course some people will have opinions that will change, I mean nowadays I would almost never listen to Korn or stuff like that but old farts like Iced Earth & Deicide!
But in general I'll listen to ANYTHING. I keep Ravi Shankar and Neil Young CDs beside my Carcass albums.

Tbh, I have a confession to make. I like Korn. I always have. Dont really like their new album, but that's beyond the point. Would this lessen your opinion of me? I also listen to a lot of black/death/power metal that wouldn't be considered as "naff" as Korn. But tarring people with the same brush because they like something that isn't "authentic" is silly.

Korn IMO are a very good band but with the release of their album Untouchables i hav totally gone off them as said in above statment and i couldn't care less what people on this board. my mate's from college or my family think of my taste in music. Im goin to listen to what i like and no-one is goin to make me listen to something i dont want to. And i think that is the way everyone should look upon the matter... as for Nu-metal who give a fiddler's elbow who listens to it orwhat age...it's their choice not your's!!!

Now leave it be ffs and quit bitchíng about something that has been bitchéd about so many time's before
