Are IOL and Eircom users on the same exchanges getting the same problems?

I thought it had gotten fixed:

over a maximum of 30 hops:

    3 29 ms 28 ms 21 ms rt001dub.netsource.ie [212.17.32.97]

    10 52 ms 49 ms 37 ms clarity.jolt.co.uk [195.149.21.11]

    but then it deteriorated again:

    C:\Program Files\Support Tools>tracert www.jolt.co.uk

    Tracing route to clarity.jolt.co.uk [195.149.21.11]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

    10 283 ms 278 ms 302 ms clarity.jolt.co.uk [195.149.21.11]

    Trace complete.

Suppose we just have to wait for them to fix the problem they said would not be fixed till this coming week.

That, or the varying network behaviour is due to the contention/no cap combo.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 832 ✭✭✭Sloth

Are contention and pings related at all? I mean I can only download at about 1k a sec atm but my pings seem totally unaffected.

hmm, weird. I downloaded stans ping program and was pinging 'clarity.jolt.co.uk'. It was all over the place, 200ms,30ms,170ms etc etc. Then out of nowhere, 40ms,50ms,40,30 etc etc. All the spikes changed to a flat line and the download speeds went upto 52kB ?

    C:\>ping clarity.jolt.co.uk

BTW, late last night was really really bad. download speeds of 5 or 6 KB from esat

Contention has nothing to do with latency, well not when you do a ping anyway.

The ICMP echo request packet that the ping command sends are very small and would not be effected by contention, even on a fully contented line.

Anyway there is no way that enough people have been activated in the last few weeks to come even close to contention.

Also contention causes lower speeds, not unstable conections.

BTW this idea that because there is no cap, it will be badly effected is incorrect. Remember Esat and Eircom don't have a hard cap, you can go over it, it is just that they might charge you. Given that Eircom has never charged anybody in the past, many Eircom users go way over the cap all the time (living dangerously IMHO), plus many Joe Soap users probably don't even know there is a cap. So these products will likely be effected the same as netsource.

If the link is being fully used, ie. contended, then by definition there will be a pile of packets waiting, queued to go across the link. The ping will join at the back of this queue and be delayed, assuming there are no router configured rules for ICMP QoS.

There is potentially a single 2M link for 192 users, each with 512k. More than 4 users downloading at full whack will cover it.

Netsource have made a point of the fact that they have no limit. They also have fixed IPs. I would suggest that this will mean there are proportionally more heavy users on Netsource.

I thought the fixed ip was only for my SME package and not for the SOHO one?
Does anyone know if SME and SOHO users have to share the same bandwidth or not?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11 stewie

In the SOHO order forms under isp services it says domain name €10 monthly. Then in the domain name registration order confirmation form it says domain name service - please indicate the domain name you wish to register - service cost €127 (ex.Vat).

Does this mean you are gonna have to pay €10 a month and then pay €127 for the year??

I didn't think the SOHO package had the doamin name thingy in it? Are you sure your not talking about the SME package?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 58 ✭✭CutterIE

    Hi,

I was wondering the same thing when I signed up with Netsource,so I phoned them up and they said to just ignore the 127 euro bit because it was an old form, all you pay for domain reg is the 10 euros.

    Cheers
    Will

Everyone on Netsource gets a fixed IP even us RADSL slobs :)
It because Netsource are a business ISP and a fixed IP is important for many business users.

What more do I need to say?
Well quite a bit actually. Firstly the cause of all the problems was a routing issue (Eircom's fault), once that was corrected today I was flying along. Secondly I just wanted to thank the help line at Via who helped me out for 2 weeks solid, sure there were some low points where there seemed to be no solution but the point is in the end they really came through for me and I'm eternally grateful for that. Finally I also want to thank MagicBusDriver and flav0rflav for all the help they offered me throughout the last two weeks and DeVore for it was his boards that gave me so much help with the problem.
Now for the first time I can actually enjoy my broadband connection and get down to the gritty business of using it.

    Regards,
    Sloth.

Nice one Sloth ! Glad to see the whole thing sorted eventually!

Btw, what are your pings like now ?

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 832 ✭✭✭Sloth

Erm pings to netsource were about 60ms and pings to jolt were in the 75 region. I seemed to have a slight speed issue like the radsl users were having (pings in the 150 region) but that seems to have cleared up now that Eircom and Via have adjusted the exchange fully. I know it's interleaved but I didn't drop any packets in any of the tests I did and to be honest the extra 20ms doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Nice to see you eventually got sorted Sloth. Was follwing this thread for a while.

Will sticky it for a week or two.

I also asked DeVore if it was possible to lock the thread, could you do that too maybe? I'm just glad it's all over and to be honest I'm bloody sick of this thread now :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭carbsy

Aye , congrats Sloth and 10/10 for perseverance. :)

I still haven't even been authenticated by their AC server yet! hoho! But they have been pretty helpful and have contacted Solwise (my router manufacturer) to resolve the issue, so fingers crossed.

    carb.

    P.S. Sloth , change the thumb. :P

cough, splutter. I hope they do that on my exchange. I contacted the guys today for the first time about the latency problem with netsource. They've asked me to send them tracerts's, pings etc. hmm
