This is a rant really but Its also to bring attention to the extent that Irish Living has been effected so negatively.Your probley already aware, but most have been focusing on moter insurance.I come from west galway and in recent years we have lost numerous regatas in the area, and what was a rockin Blues and jazz festival. The reason was always the same, the supporters could no longer keep up with the rising insurance costs.Ive since moved to holland, where there is a higher level of freedom, and local and national events are freely held without the need for insurance.the loss of local events in Ireland is removing all insentive for young pepole to stay in rural areas especially, Its also in my view destroying both local and national culture.Even sports are effected, ever see a public skate park in Ireland, Its a legal imposibility. Has it been noticed? and any Ideas what to do about it, Legal reforms maybe?.

    /End of Rant.

Tis true what you say and more besides, soon it'll be damn near impossible to stage any sort of public activity without writing a massive cheque first lest someone stub thier toe.

The whole insurance market, be it for private cover or public liability is totally screwed-up. No-one is actualy winning except the chancers and the legal hacks who support thier compo habit.

Where to start the fix though? You can pass as many laws as you like - it'll not make a bit of difference as this is Ireland, home of the cute whore and the blind eye. Someone should sue over that...

if you are hosting an event, is it possible to get those attending to sign waivers about insurance/sueing etc?

    would that be even legal?

It only mitigates with regard to damages - it does not immunize you. Insurance premiums in Ireland are high largely because we have the second or third highest rate of claims in the World. For the slightest accident, someone can easily walk away with a few grand.

As a result, premiums must be kept high, as the cycle of premiums and claims perpetuates the old Irish tradition that to earn a living you have to shaft someone else, rather than work for it.
