    Hey Neo,

AS you've tried a few headphones it must be the unit itself then. Time to dig out the receipt and get onto Amazon.

This tends to happen with most headphone jacks, especially sony ones. I have a couple of pieces of audio equipment from friends who broke them.

aye loose connection in the headphone jack is probably to blame .. i presume if you hold the jack in or put pressure on it the sound is grand? happens a lot with portable equipment as mosmo said when the cables stretched or pulled.. if its under warranty then send it back, if not dig out a place that'll fix minidiscs and see if they'll have a look at it (or have a look yourself).
