I'm pretty sure I heard solos (in some of the songs anyway). Besides, solos aren't everything. I've heard ****e songs with good solos and vice versa. Of course I've heard brilliant songs with brilliant solos too.

    Anyway .. meh!

Yeah, but you need solo's in nearly all your songs Lemming. Sometimes solos do not fit into songs which is perfectly ok in my opinion. But most of the new Metallica stuff has space for a solo. St Anger for example, at one point I thought there was going to be a solo because it all fitted in perfectly but it just went back to the same riff again and again... zzzzz!

Oh god I need some sleep!

Exactly what i was thinking. There's one point in the song that has great potential for a solo.

On the topic of solo's not being needed.. Thrash metal needs solos. It's one of the most important parts of the song imho. It's the climax to it all. Metallica especially are a solo band, and the only reason as to why they got rid of them i can think of is to appeal to a more younger audience(i.e linkin park fans)

Gone are the days of the signature solo in every song.
You never need solos though, most solos are there to hide shoddy songs.
So maybe St.Anger could have used one then :)

I don't agree with that. As Giblet pointed out, sometimes the solos are there to hide the rest of the song. If you look at it another way, it's almost predictable in that everyone expects a solo. So that's another way to look at it. "Why SHOULD we do a solo?" etc

    Good point!

True, I find that some of my favourite songs have no solos in them, Morbid Angel's "God Of Emptiness" being one. The solo was left out in that song because there was no need for one and at one point I didn't even notice that there was no solo in it. Raining Blood by Slayer being another.

But thats what I meant when I said you need solo's in nearly all your songs. Some songs need them. Others don't.
