Damien Duff told the press today he was really pissed off cause they want 20mil for him and Utd will only pay 12 at most!! Is 20 million realistic??

A couple of years ago it probably would have been. £20m is too much for any player nowadays. I knew when Blackburn were putting a huge price on Duff's head that he would become unhappy. An unwise move by Mr Souness.

I'd say 15 is reasonable, given that Duff still manages to catch the eye in a very very average Blackburn team.

Given support of a Man Utd/Arsenal playing style he could develop into one of the greats.

Souness however, is a moron. Who knows how it may work out.

The current prices on players and their wages is a joke it is going to be the ruin on football. No one is worth more than 5,000 per week imho.

Its rio ferdinand syndrome - rio costs 30 million, woodgate costs 9 - does that mean rios more than 3 times the defender woodgate is?

Blackburn will try to get as much out of united as they can before selling duff - who they dont *want* to sell in the first place, regardless of what duff wants to do. Souness is after all the blackburn manager, not the united youth development coach. If united are willing to spend silly money ( Veron, Ferdinand ) then why shouldnt souness charge a silly price?

The 20 million for duff is unrealisitic though - for 8 million more you could probably get Nedved who is pure proven consistent quality at the highest level whilst Duff is mostly potential. You could get Joe Cole for half the price, who at least is a cheaper option when youre looking for the potentially great player.

Nah, for 20 million youd want the finished article.

I tink if you look at Duffs stats for the last two seasons, you'll see that he *is* a proven player.

The beauty is, he isn't the finished article... he's probably going to get alot better.

    Its a bloody frightening prospect.

I tend to agree. What might limit his price slightly is that I don't think he'd consider moving abroad (just a guess on my part)

The price tag that slapped on his head is completly unrealistic. In the current climate where money is at a premium 20mil is simply greedy.

Nobody will pay that. 12 to 15 is fair. Heskey and 6mil.

There is a £15 Million get out clause on his contract, I cannot see how they can ask for more than that...

TBH I don't blame Blackburn or Souness for trying to get as much as they can from their best player, especially as they don't even want to sell him. As for Duff telling the press that he was frustrated remember its getting into the quiet time of the year when there are no more proper football stories and the papers have to be "inventive" with their "exclusive" scoops.

i think 15m is far too much. i dont see the prices of 2-3 years ago being paid for any players unless its zidane or ronaldo.
    clubs just cant pay it.
and to be honest, i think man utd are the club who broke the rules with their wages to keep keane and that has blown up in pretty much everyones face. it will end up like the scottish league with 2 or 3 teams with all the money playing for the league themselves.
as it is, there are only 5 team anyway. id be surprised if he was purchased for more than 10 m

Theres talk of a swap deal between liverpool and balckburn involving Duff in return for Heskey and some money ... dunno how tru it is though .....

It's too high but Blackburn are just using the standard 'start higher than you expect to get and work down' until they meet Man U somewhere in the middle.

I heard this morning that Auxerre want 24mil from Liverpool for Djibril Cisse - now that's excessive.

I read on PlanetFootball.com, that Liverpool were to offer Heskey + 7 million for Duff. (They reckon Heskey is worth 8 million).

I think 15 million is too much, but if Liverpool were to get him for Heskey plus cash, I'd be well happy cause Heskey aint worth squat imo. :D

blackburn will want as much as possible for duff and imo united will pay up if the offer came about but will duff go to united fighting for his place with fortune and giggs

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,392 ✭✭✭jonno

That's exactly what I was thinking woosaysdan. Just last week Kewell said (or reportedly said) taht he wouldn't move to Utd for fear of becoming a bit player. If that happened to Duff it could ruin his career and the same for Kewell.

Back to the question in hand, I think that the main reason Souness has such a high price tag is that in the current market teams like ManYoo have paid such crazy prices. When you start buying people like Ferdinand and Veron for near 30million each, obviously other managers are gona milk it and put huge price tags on their main assets. IMHO it's teams like Real Madrid and ManYoo (or any of the richest teams in the world) that have made a mockery of the transfer market and puts all teams that don't have the same resources of the running for world class players.

As WWM said; if it keeps going like this soon the English league and maybe a few more will end up like the SPL

    Duh!
Blackburn aren't looking for a fair price, they want to keep Duff, and the best way to do that is put a big feck off price tag on his head!

He just signed a new 3 yr contract, and Blackburn are right to say, if you want our player, meet our valuation.

1 more point. how much do you think it would cost blackburnm to replace Duff with an equally good player?

    X

Of course you're going to put an unrealistic price-tag on your biggest asset. It makes sense business-wise. Obviously Man Yoo and Liverpool are willing and able to pay £15m for Duffer, they just want to stall as long as possible, to see if Blackburn cave in and knock a few million off the price-tag. And they're dead right too. I can't see Blackburn going for a cash + player deal from Liverpool. If Heskey's priced at anymore than £5m I'll laugh. And laugh. And laugh some more. And then cry.

Spurs were supposed to have offered 8million for him too.

Looks like Souness is kisking up fuss about any of the players leaving. Brum are looking for David Dunn after he said he wanted to go and now Souness is giving them stick. I'd sya if he gets his way he will have the same team again next year with no changes:rolleyes:

if duff does stay at blackburn he wont be there for long imo another season tops

I cant see anyone forking out more than 15 mill for Duff certainly not Liverpool which is why I half expect to hear Kewell is joining for about 8.

    Mike.

I'd be well happy if we signed Mr Kewell. He's still only 24 and could probably be bought for around half the price of Duffer. What a bargain! Also, Leeds love buying Liverpool rejects (not counting GOD as one) so a cash + player option could easily be trashed out. But there's teams from Spain, Italy and France aswell as England looking to sign HK, what sort of incentive can Liverpool give him...wanna play in the UEFA Cup Harry?

I think Duff is worth the price tag Blackburn put on his head. Damian Duff is a WORLD class player and has proved it at the biggest stage of them all. He caused the Spanish tremendous problems in the world cup, he had a great finish to the season in scoring a handful of goals which got Blackburn into that last UEFA Cup spot, I think Duff is top drawer and I hope Liverpool fork out the money to bring him to Anfield
