I thought people might be interested in this site:
    http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/

I'm on a NTL connection and have a speed of 515kbs. It really is a great service for the few that can get it.

the test on bandwidth place used to be accurate, but underestimates your speed now. i find that the best way to find out is the performance monitor in winxp.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/speedtest.html is also good for ntl users

    2nd 128K took 1813 ms = 72296 Bytes/sec = approx 602 kbits/sec
    3rd 128K took 1812 ms = 72336 Bytes/sec = approx 602 kbits/sec

I have the Eircom starter pack with two systems at home. The laptop connected via wireless gives an average of 430Kb/sec while the hard wired desktop gives 460kb/sec. It would be interesting to do the test with the router removed to see what the overhead is.

409.7 kilobits per second on NetSource RADSL this morning, but 100k at 1am last night :(((((

I'd add on a hefty margin of error for any bandwidth measurement to a rackspace user in Texas, which, I believe, is where bandwidthplace is hosted.

    Eircom 1 mb enhanced.

Your raw speed was 747310.01 bits per second which is the same as:

    Communications

    747.3 kilobits per second
How communication devices are rated. Kilo means 1,000 and mega means 1,000,000. Examples include 56k modem and 10Mbit Ethernet

    Storage

    91.2 kilobytes per second
The way data is measured on your hard drive and how file sharing and FTP programs measure transfer speeds. Kilo is 1,024 and mega is 1,048,576.

    1MB file download

    11.2 seconds
The time it would take you to download a 1 megabyte file at this speed.

    I have used

    http://www.dslreports.com/stest

Which I have found very good, as it tests speed up and down!! Xbox Live users need to keep an eye on the u/l speed, especially if hosting

Also when allied with the tweaking tools on the same site.....

    http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks

    ....comes in very handy

If you just want to check your throughput, then you can check on Irish Broadbands speed test page which is probably hosted in Ireland:

596591bps - sounds right to me

I was just shy of 512K Wireless on my Netsource ADSL. Not too shabby.
