Hi all , Dave here ( bigtime newbie !) I've just set up a website and have submitted my URL to a few search engines .Are there any search engines which rule the roost so to speak so when you submit to them you increase your chances of a result on some of the bigger engines.Having a real slow time of it on google !! :-(
    Cheers , Dave

Ok first off - This month is a terrible time for Google. Google are currently going through an update which has taken nearly two months now.

They are changing their alog to try and erase the index of spamming websites. There is also talk of them trying to eliminate web blogs from the directory.

This is not due to be sorted out until the middle/end of june.

The best way to Get on the search engines is by developing back links to your website. For example - if I was to link from my website to your website google would eventually pick up your website. This could obviuosly take time though. But the more links to your website the better and quicker you will acheive this.

As google's results are apparently used by over 90% as the search queries you will be hitting the majority of users. However, this is not enough. You should always try and be on the top 10 major search engines.

A good place to start for getting listed on these is www.dmoz.org
A free listing serice which is used not only by google but a lot of the major search eninges.

Manullay submit your website to as amny of the free paid listing eninges there are. If you want to be up there quickly.... pay for your listing!

If it is a .ie and it was registered and live before 28/05/2003 then it will be in WhoisIreland.com. Google and most of the world's main search engines pick up their .ie information primarily from this website on an automatic basis.

Getting into Dmoz/ODP as tomEd has suggested is also important though Google's pickup from DMOZ can take six to eight weeks in some cases.

    In terms of importance:
    Google
    MSN
    Yahoo

It can be important to get into Google due to the fact that it supplies branded Oirish searches to Esat/IOL/Oceanfree and also Eircom now uses Google as its search supplier.

Just a word to say that Dmoz is having problems at the moment
with submission or updating of sites. Another place to go is the Yahoo directory. Plus there are Irish sites like www.browseireland.com
    http://www.niceone.com/ http://www.finditireland.com/

Some of those problems are technical. In most cases though, the editors for various categories do not exist and and I think they are bumped up to higher editors. In some categories, the links and the descriptions are out of date or just plain wrong. Dmoz has cleared some of the scumbag dropcatchers [1] out of the directory but it has a long way to go yet to be effective at this.

Another place to go is the Yahoo directory. Plus there are Irish sites like

Yahoo charges for inclusion and I don't think it is really worth it unless the website being submitted is actually selling online. The vast majority of people navigate by search engine. From what I remember, Yahoo's default search is set to 'search engine' rather than 'directory'.
Is this one still active? It always looked a bit derivative of Dmoz. The last time I looked, it did not seem to be actively updated.

You could include http://www.irishsearch.net in the list. I was thinking of adding a version the Irish ODP index as a directory on WhoisIreland and merging it with the .ie webspace. It would probably be the best way for Irish sites to get picked up by the major players. Of about 150K pages served each month, at least 40K would be the major search engines updating their .ie index from the site.

I'm just watching Inktomi spidering the .ie websites details at the moment. These guys seem to be a little more active lately as does Altavista.

[1] These are individuals and companies that reregister lapsed domains in order to take advantage of the page rank or link's inclusion in directories such as Dmoz. Typically they are links to porn sites or linkswamps.
