In this Economist article it refers to Navini as a 4G supplier. Navini are the equipment suppliers behind the new IBB product in Tallaght.

It looks as if 4G could finally break the stranglehold which Eircom has on the Irish market, and perhaps provide a way for everyone to enjoy broadband at a reasonable rate ANYWHERE in the country.

There is a lot of interesting stuff on the next "4G" although there is no agreement on exactly what 4G will be. OFDM is likely www.nextnetwireless.com as is variant CDMA both of which use TDD.

I think there will be a lot of developments in the Non-Line of Sight kit in particulat in the MMDS range and the new 3.5Ghz range - mainly because of the distances you can achieve - 25Km and 17Km resp.

    Definately a space to watch.....

It is a catchall phrase for new wireless technlogy

    1. Generally non line of sight
    2. Very good spectrum use (Mbit per Mhz of bandwidth)
    3. Generally static but cellular or mesh topology
    4. Not interoperable between suppliers (like early 802.11B which was a standard )
    5. Is now starting to coalesce around a new standard 802.16 but may be at the third or fourth iteration of the standard before all the suppliers back it fully and become compliant.

I would expect that the accepted 4G standard will more than likely be 802.16, probably within a year or so.
