Can anyone recommend someone to repair a laptop in greater Dublin area

The onboard video is dead and I need to replace motherboard.
Best price for the Job so far is €650 by newbridge computers. Other problem is:- its a toshiba satellite 1100 duron DVD, not worth that repair price and parts are expensive.

I take it works with an external monitor - if not then you might have other problems. - Generally the most expensie bit to replace is the screen, don't even condsider getting it fixed unless you are 100% it is working ...

Have you priced a replacement - DELL had a brand new notebook for under €900 + VAT recently..

Maybe someone out there has a cracked screen - in which case thier notebook is beyond economic repair (especially if you sell off the battery / HDD / RAM) and you could make one from two..

It could be something as simple as a loose connector from the LCD to the motherboard...

Call Business Management Systems - they are an authorised Toshiba repair centre - ask for Mark Carrol - Phone 01-4504277.

Dont know about pricing - but expect it to be pricy

    Mark in BMS
yeah he'd be your best bet alright .. and if he says it's beyond economic repair you could look at an external LCD monitor.

    HI Folks,
Thanks, will follow up on monday.
BTW Capt'n the screen goes dead on ordinary CRT monitor as well, i figured(guessed) that meant the whole video is gone.
This is the way the box runs
Laptop turns on, OK for 1 minute, winxp all bells ringing, then screen goes dead, no TV out either. fans still on, all drives respond, so does crtl+alt+del- for reboot, but video stays dead when rebooted.
Leave it for an hour or so with no power and get 1 minute of screen again.
Please tell me I am wrong and it might not be mobo/video

Try all the basics - not likely to fix , more a case of rulling out all you can without reaching for a screwdriver. (Spent 10 minutes today trying to clip a key on a notebook keyboard - fiddly things - had to take the key to pieces b4 would go back)

remove everything than can be uncipped -battery / CD / floppy /mouse / etc. - it could be something stupid - if you have upgraded ram ...

Try the battery OR psu without the other

Forget about XP on the HDD and boot up off a floppy or CD to rule out the OS.

This is where it would have been handy to have installed the command prompt - \i386\winnt32 /cmdcons ....

Heating problem ?? make sure all vents are clear etc..

Times like this it would be nice to get into the BIOS to turn off cache etc.... (Tosh) - try the maximum poser saving options - this will keep stuff as cool as possible af long as possible
