Survey: What spec is your machine at work?

I was sitting waiting for my pooter at work today to finish doing something and I realised my home machine is 3+ times faster than my work machine - not that I'm complaining about sitting doing nothing and getting paid for it ;)

I took to wondering what other people are using at work and how that compares to their home rig (if you have one)

    At home I have 2.4Ghz P4 Desktop (and a 933Mhz PIII)
At work I'm using an 800MHz PIII laptop.

All of my home machines are faster than this piece of crap... its a PIII 450 i think with 192mb of ram. My fastest at home as athlon XP 2100 with 1 gig of ram.

In work, I have an IBM laptop. 1.8Ghz Pentium 4, 256MB DDR, 20GB HD, DVD/CDRW, ATI Radeon Mobility 7500.

(And a shed load of DELL servers...)

I am led to believe that a load of multinational companies have been putting off upgrading computers to save costs ... what they have been doing is adding ram ... so I ended up with a PIII 650 and 512 MB ... nearly more ram than megahertz ....
My desktop is a PIII 733 with 512 as well ...

When DHL deliver me stuff today (hopefully) I'll have a P4 2.4C running at 3Ghz with 512MB soon ....
    /me drooling like Homer Simpson

I'm writing this on an IBM T30 Laptop Pentium 4M 2.4 Ghz (I think) with 512Mb RAM. It also has wireless networking built in (not a Centrino, though).

It runs Quake Arena and Star Trek Elite Force like a dream...

1400mhz Athlon 512 mb ram. We keep our machines fairly upto date here, because we use some fairly CPU intensive apps. Word and Excel etc.

Up until last week my work PC was:

    Pentium 133
    64Mb RAM
    6 Gb HDD
    NT4

Used for Word, Excel, Autocad, SAP, Powerpoint etc.
Bad enough you may think, except... There were 8 people on various shifts (2 per shift) sharing this PC. The user profiles filled about half of the hard drive. Depending on what you were doing you may have to uninstall one or more apps to make room for the one you needed to use!

This is in one of the two tech multinationals in Leixlip (I don't know what the other one is like) that have spent the past couple of years blaming their woes on the fact that companies are not spending money on computers and IT equipment and suggesting that they are being very short sighted for doing so.

I was talking on the phone to one of our IT bods a short while ago, asking what was done with the old PCs and could I have one. She said that what they get rid of is total rubbish and wouldn't be good for anything and listed off a couple of model numbers as examples. When I started laughing she asked me why. The first model she mentioned was what I had on my desk! She could not believe this was what I was doing my work on, even less so when I told her it was for 8 people.

Happy ending time: I now have a new P4 2.4 512Kb 30Gb. Now I feel I should be wearing a seatbelt at my desk.

Home: Athlon XP 2000+, 512KB, 20GB and 80GB, GF3 Ti500, Boston Accoustics surround sound, WiFi, DVD, CD-RW etc. and I still reckon it's quicker than my work PC:)

Dell Optiplex GX1 - P3 550 with 512MB RAM and not much else to show.

    At home I've got,
Gateway 700XL - P3 700 with 128MB RAM, TNT2 32MB, DVD, CDRW, SB Live Value!, 10GB HDD and a few other niggly bits,
    (Win 98 SE)

    I also have a
Toshiba Satelite Pro 4600 Laptop - P3 750 with 256MB RAM, cyberblade XP GFX 16MB, DVD, 20GB IBM HDD, 10/100 Lan and crappy Wi/Fi
    (Win 2k and RH8.0)

It works well enough for me. :)
