Well not really, its basically VoIP (Voice over IP) which is nothing knew! Instead of using a cellular providers network, you will no wbe using a Wifi providers networks! They said VoIP was the end of tradtional telcos like Eircom but it has not made much of a dent. The biggest users are still large multi-nationals!

yep I realise that's its voice over ip but the difference this time is that its wireless. It will make V IP more acceptable to individuals especially when you consider costs. At the rate their rolling out WiFi spots in the states it will become the alternative in all forms of communication.....even FM radio.

Maybe so, but one important question springs to mind........ Who owns the wirless hotspots? Considering O2 have begun deploying them here already and Vodafone are planning to do so soon, its just a matter of them realigning their technology to continue as normal!

yes ..its all very interesting...In the states Restaurants, Cafes, Hospitals, College Campus, airports and telcos are rolling it out (WiFi Phone pods and booths) on a large scale. StarBucks wifi roll out has really boosted its branding even more and people are already using it to listen to broadband stereo net radio on their PDA / Laptops whilst drinking coffee. The 54mb version is the one to watch out for......the big question.. will or could it have an impact on the never ending 3g roll out in Europe?
Come to think of it...because of deregulation the Telco's here haven't got the monopoly on WiFi roll out as they have with DSL (exchanges etc).

A valid counter argument, it is still the same companies, with 3 million customers between them, who will have the capital to take such a risk and make such an investment.

Then ya can bring in Brand awareness just for the craic... Never mind the fact that WIFI hotspots will only come into their own when they are tied in with existing GPRS or UMTS networks.
