Google Maps "Searching for GPS..." regularly all of a sudden (on two phones)

Anyone noticing problems with Google Maps recently and repeatedly showing "Searching for GPS..." every 10-15 seconds?

I thought initially it was the phone (Xperia Z5 Compact) and factory reset it but the problem remained.

Thinking the phone was on the blink, I managed to borrow a spare Android handset ready to send my own off for repair, let the spare update to latest versions of everything but am completely stumped as I am having identical issues!

Basically you're driving down the road, the tracking dot which is normally pretty smooth at moving along the map as you move just stalls, pops up "Searching for GPS..." then the dot lurches forward as the GPS catches up with itself then stalls again a few seconds later - and repeat... and repeat...

This is in areas where Google Maps has worked flawlessly before but it seems unlikely I have two faulty phones...? Either way it's driving me nuts!!!

Likely the app more than the phones causing the problem

Seems to be a weird Marshmallow issue with Assisted GPS. Lots of reports online since people upgraded to 6.0 or later.

    What has me baffled:

No problems whatsoever if running the phones on a 3 SIM. Maps is perfect.
Issue exqctly as above on a Vodafone SIM.
Not as bad on a Meteor SIM but not perfect either.

Happened to me the other day, lost gps completely during a journey, only got it back after restarting Google Maps. Odd thing too I lost network on Meteor in an area where there is strong signal. Had to do a network search to get signal back.

Just get the Heremaps app instead. Used it during a recent holiday in Italy and it was great. Free to download and works offline so doesn't use up data allowance.

It shouldn't really matter which networks used because your tracking over GPS but for the record the Three network is my connection.

By right it shouldn't matter but depending on which SIM is un my phone I either get perfect GPS (Three), intermittent GPS (Meteor) or practically no GPS at all (Vodafone).

Hmmm thanks for that, I've never heard of that before. Perhaps a code bug so with M
Will try without a sim just to test this too.

I have a Moto G running Android 5.1 and lately I've noticed lots of messages about satellites. On the top left bar I often see a satellite dish icon which I think means it's downloading AGPS data and when I'm unlocking the display to do something, there's now often a white bar with satellite data that I didn't used to see in the past. Weird.
