Hi, am just attempting to put something here as an interim measure, just to flag that the first race of 2017 is this weekend.

    Race|Date|Location|Distance
BHAA Bank Of Ireland cross-country|Saturday 7 January 2017|Tymon Park, Tallaght, Dublin 24|2/4 miles
BHAA Eir cross-country|Saturday 21 January 2017|Cherryfield Park, Firhouse, Dublin 24|2/5 miles
    BHAA Garda cross-country|Saturday 04 February 2017|Phoenix Park, Dublin|2/4 miles
BHAA ALSAA North County Farmers cross-country|Saturday 18 February 2017|ALSAA, Dublin Airport|2/5 miles
    BHAA AIB/NUI cross-country TBC|Saturday 04 March 2017|National University of Ireland, Maynooth, Co. Kildare|2/4 miles

These are a great variety of cross-country events, from flat parkland (e.g. Maynooth) to more challenging hilly trails (e.g. Gardaí). Someone better-informed might want to edit out the 'TBC' and add any other events in due course.

Seems to be a decent pre-entry for the BHAA Bank of Ireland cross country in Tymon park tomorrow. Races start at 11 and 11.30. Registration is open on the morning from 9.30.

See you there. Looking forward to a nice event.

Balmy january conditions in Tymon this morning. There early helping out with the work crew to mark route. Plenty of help so took the opportunity to run. Note to self: train for these things! Nice route. Not that muddy. A decent turn-out considering the clashing masters and other events this weekend.

Well done all. Course didn't look too sticky for the time of year :)

Very generous results, my time was almost 50 secs slower than the time given on those results.

Coincidentally the only x-country race (5k) of the Cork BHAA scene was on today, just wondering why are there different lengths for men & women in all the ones in the Leinster calendar?

Times appear to be out all around. The chip timing system mustn't have been synched with the air-horn start :)

I think so. I finished 8 places higher than recorded position. I hope they are able to correct mistakes.

I see on the website that there is a Winter league. Could anyone briefly explain how it works as can't appear to find it on the site? Thanks

Essentially the Winter League runs over the cross-country season. It would've started with the Teachers' race in Castleknock College in Oct 2016.

There are seasonal leagues, so don't worry about joining in the middle of one particular league or prior to the commencement of another.

After becoming a member and participating in a race you're assigned a Standard. The bands of standards are grouped into categories, which run as separate tables, e.g. "Men's A ... Men's B" and so forth.

There are also age-related bands. It means that you've a got a chance of scoring in a particular sub-category on each individual race.

Team prizes were once one of the most central components of the BHAA, as it was originally organised as a workplace-based team competition. (It may not have the modern hi-tech companies getting involved to the extent one would hope, any many of the traditional employers - e.g. Guinness, Dublin Bus etc - have fallen by the wayside as race organisers, but it was a "neutral territory" of sorts when various NACA/BLÉ wars were raging).

Given the move to high degrees of self-employment in various sectors, e.g. IT or the 'gig economy' in other fields, the BHAA has become more relaxed in terms of how sectoral teams are declared. The team element is important, as it gets people to turn up for others, or to make that final push: e.g. even if in 101st place it could still get the team a placing in the league.

(On that point, there are separate men's and women's races for many of the cross-country events, but some women enter the "men's race" to help the workplace team score for team prizes).

I'm not explaining any of this too well, but I'm sure a BHAA committee volunteer can add some clarifications to the above. Basically you get a 'Standard' (e.g. 15,16,17), which are grouped into Leagues, but besides the individual competition you can also score for teams. (Your standard operates within a range of time bands, so you will rise and fall with your scores).

(It takes an incredible amount of effort on behalf of the volunteers from each workplace, e.g. from the race organisers to those who compile the various category prizes).

It's also good fun: if you were a footballer you wouldn't be on the same pitch as some of the Premier League players, but in BHAA races you're on the same starting line in a race of 150-200 people, e.g. you literally see people disappear over the horizon! You also get to gauge honestly how much room you have for improvement: e.g. in a large 3,000 person race that's run on an annual basis you can kid yourself but in a small race on a fortnightly basis you are shown up if you harbour delusions of improvement that aren't there.

It's quite sociable: the race organisers' volunteers put on tea, coffee, brack and sandwiches afterwards, which allows for a good chat with a broad array of ages and abilities. Similarly, they do track, trail, road, cross-country and even a beach race: you'll find people who excel at all sorts of terrain or distance relative to another.

(In that regard it gives you a lot to learn from talking to club veterans of the 1980s running boom to 2000's gym bunnies who've learned how to run via yogic flying).

Great to watch an Olympian winning at Cherryfield this morning. A Lithuanian who ran in Rio in the marathon won by a long way this morning clocking 25.02 for the 5 miles. Seriously impressive run. I believe he arrived in Ireland last week and will be running for Balbriggan AC. Has a marathon best of 2.16 ,I was told by a member of Balbriggan. They have a few Lithuanians in their club . He did 2.26 in Rio apparently. Jim Aughney got a good look at him today. He might be an athlete to watch in the coming months as I am sure he will race regularly. Wonder if he will be picked for London ?

Very enjoyable event as usual on Saturday, you have to love the atmosphere around these races. Any sign of the results being available?

Results from Saturday's Eir Cross COuntry Races are available on the BHAA site. Fantastic running from everyone. Well done to Laura McDonnell and Valdas Dopolskas (Rio Olympian!!!!!) on their respective victories. See you all on Feb 4th for the Garda CC Races. :-) Happy Running.

Great - thanks for that. They are not in the usual spot on the website so presume that's why people couldn't find them.

I'm running the BHAA race in the Phoenix Park this coming Saturday. It's my first attempt at a cross country race, and I've only run in spikes a couple of times. Looking at the course(I know this area of the park) it appears to cross a tarmac path.
Is this the usual course for this race, and if it does cross the path would I be better off wearing runners than spikes? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Wear your spikes, crossing the path will just be a step or 2 and they usually have a mat or something down there.

Best of luck BB, in my opinion that's the toughest race on the bhaa calendar, jumping in at the deep end is always more fun. :)
    Definitely spikes btw.

Should be a soft one tomorrow with all that rain! As mentioned above definitely spikes!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭glacial_pace71

Won't be doing it tomorrow, as I'm still recovering from a calf strain, (have missed all the BHAA cross country events thus far), but here's the elevation etc from last year if anyone needs to see it:

    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1051586314

For those who haven't ran cross-country, this is one of the best courses: plenty of challenging climbs, one or two tricky descents (it's more the tree roots prior to the descents than the actual charge/slide/tumble down to the Khyber).

Ignore the distance on the above, it's definitely 4 miles - I just occasionally am slow to hit the 'start' when haring off after the posse. Here's the almost-identical course in 2012:

    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/170264332

Once again, have a look at the elevation readings. It's a great challenge, and tomorrow it'll offer the possibility of the free mud facial.

Really enjoyed (if that's the right word) the race today in the Phoenix Park, tough going. Glad I wore the spikes. I'll definitely be back for more.

Great course, great organisation. Much prefer the hillier routes to the flatter routes :- ) Kudos Mr Kiely for the win.

This is a very provisional 4 Mile race results. Once the paper backup have been processed the full short and long distances race results will be posted. Perhaps Cork BHAA have it right, top 3 on the day and the rest get results on Wednesday afterwards.

I heard last night that the k-club 10k is now on the 25th March instead of the 8th of April. Is this correct?

K-Club and DCC have swapped; K-Club now March 25, while the DCC St Anne's park races are now on April 8.

Oh, no, now it clashes with the IMRA Wicklow Way trail. Oh well, these things happen. Two of my favourite races of the year – decisions, decisions….

Delighted to see this. I had pretty much resigned to missing this again this year with Nationals on the 9th.

    Clashing with Dunboyne now.

Now we have 2 good races besides each other and close to each other

    Good auld Irish way planning

Will feel bad now if I do K-club as a running club will lose out then!

There's no planning when the BHAA aren't buying into permit rules AR :/ Clubs can only do their best...

Hi J, just wondering where you saw this ? Can't see it on FB or the website. Was hoping to do both these races - is the clash confirmed ?

Wasn't blaming a club here, Dunboyne date was organised first.

You could always offer to marshal or pace etc if your worried about club missing out?

Always a tough time of year to fit everything in between National 10k, Road Relays etc so no matter what weekend people aren't gonna be happy. I do think it makes sense not to have two 10k's which would see a large overlap on consecutive days and I think it is a positive step but next year hopefully can improve calendar again with the 4 milers.

From our treasurer, who I'd consider to be a reliable source. Not sure why they haven't updated FB or the site yet.

EDIT: I should probably add....don't shoot the messenger! The date for the K-Club was changed last year as well, as some of you may recall. I found that out over the PA in mid-race, while I was plodding my way through the slop in ALSAA! Much to my annoyance, as it clashed with Conn as a result.

Agree to disagree. Wouldn't be fair to spend a morning and then afternoon away from the kids, considering I work all week.

I've heard the very sad news of the passing of BHAA stalwart Maurice Timmins.

Maurice was heavily involved in the BHAA over many years, both at committee level and as a race organiser. (He was instrumental in the Maynooth race in previous years).

    https://www.inotices.ie/mauricetimmins851295741

Some better-informed than me will provide a suitable obituary/eulogy in due course. I can only say that in the short time I served as a BHAA committee volunteer (a short number of years ago) I was honoured to have worked with such a dedicated man, an athletics supporter to the backbone.

From the BHAA Facebook page, just in case anyone on here wasn't aware xc in Maynooth is cancelled.

***AIB XC Race March 4th CANCELLED***
Due to the death of Maurice Timmins who was one of the AIB race organising team Eddie and the AIB team have cancelled their race due to take place on Saturday 4th March.
We appreciate you understanding and many thanks for your kind words about our friend and member of our running family Maurice. #BHAA #ripmaurice #runningfamily

The BHAA K-Club 10km is on this Saturday. Fast, flat course. Suggest to all day runners and members to pre-register online and collect their number on the morning, you can save your queuing time to the race start.

Very enjoyable day in the K Club. Nice fast, flat course but I did struggle a bit on the second lap, managed to get a 6 second PB but I was hoping for more. It was unseasonably warm. A total of 429 finishers, one of the biggest BHAA fields in recent times. There was a lot more club runners in the field than usual. A nice round of applause for Maurice Timmins before we all started and a book of condolences was also available for signing.

The spread afterwards was fantastic. It had everything hot dogs, pasta, pastries, cake, fruit. They have certainly raised the bar. Well done to all involved.
