It's even harder to believe that you're not trolling at this point :pac:

Not trolling. Went to a gaming convention, enjoyed it. Tried to be kind by updating people on my experience of it, get pelted with questions regarding floor layouts etc.

Ferdi needs to brush up on his people skills there dealing with the irate public.

Granted both parties could have handled it better, but shocking display of body language (I think at one point he actually smirks and rolls his eyes)?

Ouch... plot thickens. The organiser is after deleting his twitter account.

No troll. The article says a fire marshall closed down the event - Fake news

It also says they sold 20000 tickets for a venue that holds 7000 people - Fake news.

    Moving along.

What time did you go at that you seemed to get in so quickly via the front door? Or did you just skip the queue?

They sold 24,000 tickets, 12,000 per day, with all the equipment capacity would be between 7,000-8,000 and the fire marshall did go to assess the situation. The article says it is about to be closed, not that it actually was.

Cant speak for him but i was there at about 10am maybe just after and the queue was like what you see in the pictures was pretty big queue at that time. I had the VIP pass but no longer than 10 minutes for me in the queue.

And if you actually read the article it says there were reports of it being shut down. REPORTS being the key word. No idea where this guy is reporting from, but if it isn't at the scene then clearly he can only go on what he is being fed.

Now, Ferdi. Surely, you would be better off getting a good sleep before you have to put on your brave face for the angry mob tomorrow.

Here's a tip for anyone going tomorrow, Buy a box of cigarettes. Have them in your hand.

Go up to the front door and say was just outside for a smoke the lady said i could go out and back in. I had my fags in my hand and he asked me was I out for a smoke? I just nodded (Was actually out for lunch across the road)

No wristband, no stamp he didn't ask or check for tickets nothing just said go ahead.

Aw crap - I've coach tickets booked for the morning to take my very excited 10 year old son to what sounds like a supremely **** and very poorly run profiteering event. I hope organisers get sued to **** and left penniless.....

I think it's pretty clear the best option would be to cancel but I gotta look at alternatives cause feel like I can't let him down - Can anyone local or in the know please post suggestions on where to bring a 10 year old kid in Dublin on a Sunday?

Anything considered, incl museums, science orientated stuff or technology etc.

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated :(

There's the Big Family Day Out in Merrion Sq, short walk from convention centre, if the weather is good. Also a funfair outside Custom house

I'm not sure at what point the queue stopped moving. I got there at 11:15 and by 11:35 I was just about to turn the corner to the final stretch where you got in. It stopped at that point - was it moving more freely before then?

Either way, the lack of communication was appalling. I was relying on people passing me by and Twitter posts which is clearly where the bleedingcool journalist mined his information from. It's not as if there was an official source that actually handled it properly.

I am wondering who that fella is who was yelling at the security that's been doing the rounds on Twitter and other places.

No idea as I just walked passed everybody. That was worth the 15 quid alone. I didn't see anyone in the normal queue move or go inside at all while I was on the way in.

No interest in this event, a friend was attending with her 10 year old so news of the carry on grabbed my interest as the afternoon went along. Was able to message her with updates and such. Been reading through the comments on the GamerCon Facebook page. I'm literally cringing at some of them.
'My kids got soaked from the rain' This is Ireland, it rains most of the time. Wear a decent coat.
'The cues (queues!!) were too long' Did they really expect there to be no queues at an event such as this?
'We were skipped in the cue (queue)' It isn't the responsibility of the organisers or their staff to stand up for people not willing to stand up for themselves.
'There was adults and teenagers pushing kids out of the way' Again stand up for yourselves and your kids!
I saw the video of the man screaming at organisers/staff, it was absolutely disgusting. I understand the organisers messed up but that kind of behaviour is disgraceful.
For the record my friend and her kid had a great afternoon. Queued for just over an hour but were prepared for it. Warm jackets and umbrellas, sorted. Once inside the kid was chuffed to bit. Said the food outlet wasn't great but again prepared for such an event and had packed lunches just in case.
I've seen people say they want reimbursement for travel cost, hotels etc. Taking the p1ss. An afternoon might not have gone as expected but get yer fricken priorities right. There's a lot worse going on at the moment all across the planet.

I think the whole thing boils down to that the event was oversold. Upwards of 20,000 tickets sold for a venue that has a max capacity for ~9,500.

So, yeah... a lot of irate families and attendees who came from all over Ireland, travelled for ages or spent extortionate amounts on a hotel stay to be left standing in the rain to be told that they couldn't come in. (The rain was just insult to injury).

Some people got in, and had a good time.

Your "a lot worse" point is moot seeing that you decided to throw your two in on this issue. ;)

Also, if you want to go the grammar nazi route it's "chuffed to bits". Needless use of the word "literally". It's a filler word like "like".

I don't suppose there is any chance of getting a refund on the sunday tickets is there? Friend is meant to be going tomorrow with her sons, but after seeing todays carry on she isn't very keen.(Queuing in the piddling rain for ages after an early start and a long bus journey wouldn't be my idea of fun either, let alone with kids!). The website only states saturday tickets so i suppose it would be a case of taking the hit would it?

Like I said, the organisers messed up big time. No excuse for the over selling, pure greed. I can understand the anger of course but the actions of some of the parents led to the situation deteriorating. Do you honestly think the staff getting screamed at led to them hurrying to let the perpetrator and his back up brigade in the door any quicker? Not a hope in hell. No one, regardless of their jobtitle, should be expected to put up with that kind of behaviour.

For my use of the word, literally I do apologise. I'm not a grammar nazi, nor any other kind of nazi. I just hate it when people spell the word queue wrong, it's a thing. I'm working on it 😉

    Brilliant! :pac:

EDIT: Oh.. I thought you were "literally apologising" and being sarcastic... That's why I'm laughing... Well no need. I realise that there are varying levels of literacy. Especially online. I've had to stop correcting people too as it got me nowhere.

I can empathise (sympathise? I get those two confused) when people have been waiting for hours with no update they will unfortunately lash out at anyone who would be "in the know". It's a terrible fact of human nature.

So, I totally agree with their outrage but that was the actual event organiser who was at the front door. I'm not saying he's the sole person responsible, but the one who should have had some common sense to limit ticket sales to match the max attendance of the venue.

    Overselling the event + travel + fatigue + rain + being told that they can't get in = I AM F*CKIN' P*SSED!

Agreed. I took one look at the queue, which by 12:30 had stretched most of the way around the building adjacent to the Convention Centre and just turned and left. Ended up over at the Science Gallery and had a great time

Reminds me of the bah humbug guy on the independent article about gamers and to grow up.

Perhaps your friends have simpler tastes but they got in, some people traveled up from down the country and didnt.

There are allot of worse things going on across the planet but who cares, we don't just forget everything that happens locally because its worse elsewhere.

The same simple minds in Ireland look down on gamers yet don't mind skulling back the old pints yesterday while the young ones wait around or watch. At least parents going to this event were trying to bring a little fun to their families.

Just for the record I had nothing to do with Gamercon, nor did AsOne, my organisation.

We were in brief contact with them about doing so but they stopped communicating with us, then a day or two later they sent a guy into our facebook group to advertise the fact he was running the fighting games, without sending us a mail to say they'd gone with someone else.

As someone who's run larger scale events before, everyone knows you patch your consoles a couple of days in advance, and you especially don't rely on the PSN for speed. Mistakes happen and you occasionally have to, but the entire show? Bad stuff.

We are currently awaiting if the amounts of money they promised as prizes will show up or not.

Took my two kids yesterday, arrived at 10am, queued for around 45mins which was a pain but not totally unexpected.
Feel sorry for those that came later as the weather was deteriorating.
To be honest not sure what we expected once inside but was not impressed overall.
Had great potential but was not set up for the volumes of people.
Biggest disappointment really was kids just wanted to play one game of anything and couldn't get on.
People were camped out with flasks and sandwiches at consoles and were not moving.
Thought that to be fair somebody-staff should have been moving people along after 10-15 mins.
Not talking about the competition but rather the public gaming on ground floor.
After queuing for so long it would not have been unreasonable to expect to get to play a game and 'take part' for 10 mins.
Serious lack of visible staff on the floor, plenty security but didn't seem to be a lot of people working the set ups apart from the organised ones like the VR etc.
Also surprised to see that people queued for the game shop inside for 20-30 mins to get to till and find out that card machines not working and had to go to other till.
Overall very disappointing. Not sure it was the end of the world as we know it bad, but it has put me off the idea of attending again.
Pity, as kids were so excited on way there, they couldn't wait to leave after a few hours though.
