Hi everybody ive just recently moved to Donegal from Australia, the nearest course to me would be Ballybofey or abit further up to Letterkenny. I Have played a couple of social rounds at Ballybofey on previous trips and i am yet to play at Letterkenny. Has anyone played these courses and which would you preferand why?

I am also looking to buy a cheap set of clubs so i dont have to be borrowing from family and friends all the time. I have seen a cheap set of ping eye2s for sale and i am wondering if anyone is still gaming these clubs or do they come under the R&A's non conforming list. Any help would be great.

I played Letterkenny back in 2010 and i didn't like it very much, apparently it sufferers very badly with wetness and some years they are still placing the ball up till summertime. Go and play a round there and decide then. I would prefer to be a member as close to home as possible so you can pop up to the course in the spring and summer evenings for 9 holes or so. Is there much of a price difference between the two?

Shame to be playing golf in Donegal and not be a member of one of their superb links courses.

Murvagh, ballyliffen, dunfanaghy all worth looking at for a start

Murvagh is great value for membership these days, but depends on where you're living? If you're living in Letterkenny I'd definitely look at Rosapenna or even Portsalon. Of the two you've mentioned, Ballybofey is better, marginally, as Letterkenny have about 10 holes below sea level and it gets very wet...or like concrete in dry weather in summer.

If your closer to Ballybofey than Letterkenny, Murvagh would probably be closer than Portsalon, Dunfanaghy etc. It's a straight good road to Murvagh and the others are narrow winding roads.
I'd recommend Ballybofey over Letterkenny, I've been a member of both, Ballybofey is playable near all year round and the membership is very friendly.
Letterkenny is closed must of winter, last year they had placing in July and theres a bad atmosphere around the club, most members are fine, but a few ruin the club.

Definitely look for the most convenient of the mentioned links courses to join,

Ping eye 2, are a bit of a interesting one/loop hole when it comes to conforming.

Harrington still playing a ping eye2 lob wedge i think
