Prometheus is pretty decent in fairness to the old man

Blade Runner 2049 is being directed by Denis Villeneuve, the in-form director behind last year's Arrival, one of the best sci-fi movies of the past 25 years and the recipient of 8 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

    Personally, I'm very excited.

So he's moving from the movie business to being a prophet and telling the future, good for him, in 2000 years he'll have a major religion still rolling

His statement about aliens is a lot more logical than the religious faith of billions of people on earth. Don't know if what he had said is seen as controversial but it shouldn't be.

He seems to assume that the aliens would be kind of American/ aggressive. If they're so infinitely superior and we're not a threat because we're primitive morons then there's probably no motivation to wipe us out. Obviously we'd have to expect some anal probing but they've probably got some really advanced alien lube.

Those vertical saucers from Arrival where pretty much taken straight out of Prometheus. Good movie though

Enemy is also worth a watch if you haven't seen it yet. It's probably his 'weakest' film but it's further proof of how comfortable he is dealing with high concept material.

If there are indeed Aliens capable of intergalactic space travel, stands to reason they would probably be intelligent beings, which leads me to believe they wouldn't come anywhere near us.
I'm not that bright myself but If I'm walking down the street and see a large gang of people killing each other with guns, drugs, oil and religion over the other side of the street the last thing I'll do is go over there.

Doesn't generally go well for less advanced society when a more advanced society pays a visit, look at human history, African slaves, wiping out native Indians etc. Think it was Stephen Hawkins that said if a alien ever pays a visit it will surely be hostile

But if they have mastered intergalactic space travel, then we would probably appear as ants to them as they would be so much more advanced than us. Would you cross the road if you saw some ants ðŸœ:-)

I dunno, fecking ants can give ya a nasty little nip if it gets up the ankle. One time I was working on a job and at least 10 of the bastards got up my pants up to my chest where the 10 of them proceeded to sting me all at once. I thought I was having a heart attack. I'd cross the road.

There are billion upon billions upon billion of stars (Suns to the ignorant)

The vast majority of these stars / Suns have planets spinning around them

A percentage of these planets reside I the 'Goldilocks zone' - Not too hot, not to cold - Eg: Perfect for life as we know it.

Does anybody really think we are alone in the Universe..? That we are so special? Are the chosen ones?? Pleeeease!!!!

Take a step back.... We are pointing weapons of mass destruction at each other, starving each other, bombing each other, killing each other.......

Religion was created to control the masses - Its as real as the Tellytubbies are...

Be nice to each other, respect each other - Stop thinking / believing we are the offspring of the God's created in his own image....

You are not - You are probably the most advanced (intellectually) bug, on the planet at the moment.

Well said. I have no problem with someone wanting to believe in religion as long as they respect other people's believes or the fact they don,t believe in any of that. If it gives them meaning and a reason to live so be it. Just don,t try forcing other people that do not believe in it to believe it thats called brainwashing. Its when someone trys to force a believe or a religion on someone that is wrong.

    Live long and Prosper

That's great except religion was often an uprising against established hierarchies, we might well be alone in the galaxy (probably not the universe) and we aren't bugs.

Its ironic that the more that we learn the more likely it seems that Independence Day Aliens or the Borg may be more likely to exist than some hyper evolved, hyper intelligent, hyper advanced, hyper peaceful space blobs.

If Scotty was right and that we nor any other species can break the laws of physics we could have a universe teeming with life but we'll never get to meet them because the distances between us are just too great. Odds are that very few species will ever get to communicate with each other in any meaningful way either unless they were lucky enough to evolve on a planet in a couple of hundred lightyear wide bubble that happened to contain another planet where intelligent life evolved at virtually the same time. ie. Doesn't matter if intelligent life existed on a planet orbiting a star only 50 light years away....if it evolved during the time of the dinosaurs here on earth. Spectroscopy might be able to tell them there is life on earth but they'll never get to visit, a probe from them would take epochs to get here and Dinosaurs don't have radio. 60 million years later the Dinosaurs are gone and Earth finally has an intelligent sentient species....but the species around that star 50 lightyears away are long dead.

However, if Faster Than Light travel is possible by some means then its probably likely that a species doesn't strictly need to invent it itself. The species just needs to be advanced enough to develop an advanced AI and its the AI that figures out FTL travel. You've now put FTL travel into the hands of a species that likely still believes in God, rapes and murders and is capable of hacking each other to bits or blowing each other to pieces. ie. Humanity will be the same in 50 or 100 years time, but AI might give us FTL before this century is out!

Convergent evolution probably means that the requirements for intelligence to arise are the same everywhere and evolution will arrive at similar solutions. Intelligence requires lots of calories for the brain so will likely only arise in predators. Predators invariably have binocular vision, Binocular vision is required for depth perception and manipulating the world. Freeing up some appendages to more easily manipulate the world. ie. Convergent evolution likely means that most of not all intelligent life is bipedal with two eyes and at least two arms.

So ironically although Hollywood went with anthropomorphic aliens for simple cost of special effects and makeup reasons, its actually more likely to be closer to the truth than some alien squid creature!

In that scenario, if we near future humans manage to maintain control of the AI after its given us FTL, we might end up being the equivalent of the rapacious Aliens in Independence day. If we lose control of the AI and it wipes us out we might end up being the equivalent of the Borg or Terminators.

This is why no less than Stephen Hawking believes that in the event of FTL being possible and us being visited by aliens its actually more likely they'll be not much more evolved than us socially or culturally or morally and that there is a very great risk of the lessons of the past when a more advanced human civilisation met a less advanced one holding true for contact between humanity and alien life.

We always assume that alien life would be around our level of advancement (give or take a couple of hundred or thousand years) in solid humanoid form flying around in ships but if there was a race say a billion years more advanced they could potentially manipulate time and space itself and would be viewed as gods were they to make themselves known

We as humans are still a long way from reaching level 1 on the kardashev scale (a scale designed to determine the level of advancement of a species)

Quick lesson on Light Years for the un-informed..

Because the distance in space is so vast (nearly incomprehensible to the average mind), we have to use the term 'Light Years'.

    Why Light Years you ask?

Because light is the fastest travelling thing known to mankind at the moment.

Light travels at around 86,000 miles per second! That' right - Per second! About 5.1 millions miles a minute!!!

So over a full 24 hr day - Light will travel 3,715,200,00 miles (give or take a few yards)

So when you hear the white coats saying - Planet X is about 30 Light Years away.... Man, that's a long way away!!

So... If some advanced race received all our transmissions and carbon footprint fallout, do you really think they'll saddle up and travel for Ga-Zillion's of years just to see us? (Why? Are we that interesting? And we will probably have nuked ourselves long before they complete 1% of the inter galatical journey)

Speed of light travel ? No proof or evidence that it I possible. Even if it is - The current structure of the human body could never withstand it (note- most people get sick on a roller coaster / try cranking up the speed to light speed!)

Sound like some blind faith you have there.
    Almost like religious belief.

The question is no longer whether a planet could support life, it's why and how does life start in the first place.

we can't make complex amino acids become life in a lab environment. Who's to say it would ever happen again?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,337 ✭✭✭rockatansky

Can't really see any issue with his logic.

As usual we have the centre of the universe complex, if there's other life out there then they're most definitely going to want to come to earth.

If s species on another planet has managed to achieve interstellar travel then they would have sufficient technology to have a look at whats going on down here without us knowing and see how big of s sh*t show we've created for ourselves.

My guess is that there's some beacon floating in space transmitting a message to all travellers to give this one a miss, it's not worth the hassle.

Life did not originate on Planet Earth in the beginning of the planets formation.

Obviously - Earth was a massive lump of molten Iron spewing liquid rock in the form of lava..

The planet had to cool down first to have any chance of life evolving.

Then we must add the magic ingredient - namely water

This was delivered to us by comet express, big boulders of ice and slush

Multiple chemical reactions had to take place over millions of year before we had the perfect soup for life (hence them poor boys in the lab need to be a little more patient with their Frankenstein efforts..)

There are several scientific papers released on the theory of the beginnings of life on Earth - Any of them make more sense that a carpenters Son (well.. erm... not really his biological son), claiming to be the Son of the Universe maker, preaching from the good book, that duly put a premature end to his short life, in a quite brutal fashion. Or... The other fella that hopped on a horse that sprouted wings and galloped off into the heavens...??
