FTTH Speeds down?

I know there was a major outage on Friday but are speeds down on FTTH? My router packed in on Thursday and i bought a new netgear nighthawk AC1900 yesterday rather than wait til tuesday to get the replacement from Eir. Easy enough to set up but speeds are only ranging from 35-80mbs via wireless and 190mb on a wired connection (Im on a 1000mb package). Trying to determine if its a router issue or the connection.

Dont know where to find that!

    Its an R7000

This has come up before with them IIRC.

First thing to do is try turning off the traffic meter (counts data used).

    Thanks, that was already disabled.

Last user didnt solve it apparently. Though its been benchmarked at near full whack.

    Thanks...disapointing after shelling out £120

OK, disabled QoS and wireless speeds up to 140, thought that was sorted but wired still only 190

this may sound dafy but is router a netgear and not ASUS??

I had same router and its a dog but wait until tuesday just in case, get your money back and get an asus for about same price. like this one

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-RT-AC68U-Dual-Band-Wireless-802-11AC/dp/B00FB45SI4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1506878327&sr=8-1&keywords=asus+router+rt-ac68u

there is some fault on those nigthawks but netgear not owning up as most users wont have ftth. mine worked ok for 5 days then halved speed so got my money back.

Thanks, you think currys will give me money back when ive opened the box?

And when you got the ASUS did it give better wifi coverage than the F2000?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,793 ✭✭✭swoofer

Its not hard to beat wi fi on the f2000!! but ASUS is tops. explain router is faulty in that it cant cope with FTTH speeds. I use an older asus RT66U and that is ace for wi fi. But wait until you get new f2000 then do speed check and take a pic. I get 945mb down with f2000 and 98mb up, ping is 6ms. I always use vodafone ie dublin server to test. I'm in Clare. You will get very different results with different servers.

I got the ASUS router but cant seem to set up for the eir fiber. Do i just need to set VID to 10?

I got the ASUS RT-AC66U router and got it set up. Had some initial problems but these disappeared when i changed its ip address which had been identical to the F2000. However, on a wired connection the most im getting is about 450mb. Unplug it and put the F2000 back in and i get 850+. ive spent hours looking at settings in the asus but cant see anything that would limit the speed, traffic analysis, QoS etc all disabled. Has anyone else got one of these and managed to get high speeds?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

Are you using IPoE(Auto Detect) or PPPoE? PPP will direct traffic through the RAS which might slow you. Only thing that comes to mind as long as the NAT boost yoke is on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 253 ✭✭mdfire

I didnt touch the WAN settings at all. I went into LAN and set the ISP profile to manual and VID to 10. Should i change the internet setting to IPoE?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

If it says "Automatic IP" then its fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 253 ✭✭mdfire

Possible then the router just isnt up to the speeds?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

Wait, the change in the OP/Title has me confused.

You originally had the R7000 from Netgear but now you have the AC66U from Asus?

    R7000 - Dual Core 1Ghz A9
    AC66U - Single 0.6Ghz Core

I know swoofer mentioned it earlier but thats a fair whack of a downgrade. IPC wont be the same but you're talking less than 50% raw grunt.

Probably too late but enticing a nerd with some nice craft beer to help you with the 7000 might have been a better avenue to follow as it should have worked well (its designed for gig connections).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 253 ✭✭mdfire

ha ha I would gladly have offered the craft beer!!

Its not a problem. The ASUS can go back to Amazon tomorrow. The real question then is what router will give me the full speed but the reliability. Im on the third F2000 this month! The courier delivering it told the wife he delivers and collects about 10 a day.

BTW the speeds on the ASUS were still higher than the netgear

Yeah, something weird there, it should be the other way around for sure. The NG or one of its sister models is what I'd recommend for most home use. Not really impressed with the current TP cohort.

RT-AC86U is a brawler (beefy CPU, belter of a radio) and then theres the RT-AC5300 which looks like something from a Predator movie. Ive not checked benchmarks but both should fly.

DLink have some too but never really played with much of their gear other than cheap switches so don't have an opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 253 ✭✭mdfire

    the NG?

Those other Asus look like youd need a licence for them!

For info the Netgear R7800 nighthawk worked a treat. Wifi has always been a problem in this house but i have the Netgear in the loft conversion and the F2000 in the living room on ground floor, converted to a wifi extender hard wired back to the netgear. Was getting 250+mbs on 5GHz.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,793 ✭✭✭swoofer

Are you saying you are getting same speeds on the Netgear R7800 nighthawk as the F2000? And is it still the case? I like netgear but I think I sent back 3. I am waiting on synology to amend the vlan10 on wan port but at the moment not in a rush.

The best router out there is probably the AVM Fritz!Box 7560. Digiweb, Westnet and a few other providers use it.

Especially with a GigE FTTH connection, you have to be VERY picky. A lot don't have the CPU to handle it.

The issue is, that a lot of speedtest servers only may have GigE themselves. Once more than one person tests at the same time, you'll get less than a Gig.

Airwire's server (Galway) has at least 10gig. Vodafone probably, too. Always test more than one server, to get an idea, if it's your line or the server, that's slow.

Your prob best to pull something from http://ftp.heanet.ie for a download speed test

Oh look, Eir now have their own speed test site - https://www.eir.ie/support/broadbandspeedtest/

Unless you flash that router with an alternative firmware, you can't. The R7000 (and models below that) don't seem to support 802.1q VLAN tagging on the WAN side.

So they won't work with FTTH (neither OpenEIR nor SIRO)

There is a thread from 2014 on the Netgear Community: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Nighthawk-WiFi-Routers/WAN-vlan-tagging/td-p/446368 asking for support. No sign, that it was fixed.

Heanet have recently had a big purge. And there are big differences on what server in the cluster you hit, if you get the speed. But it's generally an ok indication.

That one just fails with latency test error for me. Not a good start.

Speedtest.net works for most and as I said: we know for fact, that Airwire and Blacknight servers have 10gig uplink. Others may not.

I've had no issue adding VLAN 10 when I set it up but found that the router would max out at around 600Mb/s on the WAN side which is disappointing.

Instead I just connect it into the Huawei modem at GE and have configured the same SSID on both routers. The Huawei is upstairs so doesn't get much use and leave the R7000 downstairs where it gets most of the action and gets around 400Mb/s on the 5Ghz channels. No major complaints with that setup but then I don't do anything complicated with it either.

So they've fixed that ? I haven't been able to find a reference to it.

The router is a quite old design, so it doesn't have the CPU power to process Gbit/s speeds.
