My OH passed the NCT today but got this note at the bottom.

NCT Pass advisory Rear Tyres six years old.

The car has done 12K in the year we've had it and 7K for each of the two previous years. There's still loads of thread on them.

Should I get rid of them or get 2 new ones.

    It's tread not thread btw.

The older the rubber on the tyre gets the harder it gets. The harder it gets the less grip it gives you.

If you decide to keep these tyres on the car they largely have the tread on the for yrs but that's because they aren't laying any rubber down giving you grip.

    Sorry about the misspelling.

    Thanks for the advice.

They will be fine as long as they aren't cracked or damaged.

There's a reason the NCT flagged them and a previous poster just explained it.
Tyres degrade over time and lose grip, so I wouldn't agree that they will be fine.

Six years is the point at which they start alerting people to this, so it's not like your tyres are 10 years old. Examine the tyres, check for severe cracking (there probably won't be any).

We're coming out of Winter now, keeps the tyres on till about October/November this year and then change them.

How do you know they're not?

The NCT advise over 6 years, they don't specify exactly how old the tyres are on the sheet

It's not about the spelling. They are different words! I still find myself saying 'thread' and I'm working with tyres for nearly 10 years lol!!!!

Well if you got rid of them you'd be driving on the rims.

Because if they were, they would have been caught at the last NCT.

I'll concede that they could possibly be 7 years old, but either way the same advice applies.

If it was such a life-and-death critical issue, it would be an NCT fail. He doesn't need to replace his tyres yesterday, just pay close attention to them, inspect regularly and prepare to replace them this year. The mileage he gives indicates that they'll likely need replacing this year anyway.

The car wouldn’t have passed the NCT if the tyres weren’t roadworthy, so no need to rush out & buy new ones at this point in time.

As already mentioned, when tyres are six years they always issue an advisory so don’t think that it was issued for any other reason apart from their age.

Basically you are being advised to keep a close(r) look at them going forward to ensure they are roadworthy. Even with low mileage they are liable to degrade due to age & exposure to the elements.

I would certainly consider replacing them before your next NCT.

Have a 15yr old tyre on offside rear, hope it will pass again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,420 ✭✭✭✭sligojoek

Thanks for all the answers. I've had a look at them in daylight. There's no cracking or perishing. She's going to need two front tyres soon so we'll get them done first. Insurance is due mid-Feb so will get new rears after that's sorted.

I would say there are massive difference between a 6 yr old premium brand tyre and a 6 yr old budget tyre. Without knowing which he has it's hard to be as definitive as you are being imo.

I had tyres that age, premium dunlop sp sport and the grip was worse than cheap plastic Chinese tyres the rubber had aged so much.

The reason the nct flagged them is just because of their age, nothing to do with condition. If the tyre has no cracks or bulges it will be fine. If the tread depth is good there really won't be any loss of grip because of the age of the tyre. You will be able to clearly see if a tyre has degraded beyond the point of being safe.

Dunlop are known to degrade fast. I've seen sets not that old that had developed cracks. There is better premium tyres out there than dunlop.

If it was me I’d chance them for the spring and summer and change them around October or November when the weather turns.if she’s a front wheel drive throw them on the front and give her the odd wheel spin to scrub them a wee bit and freshen the rubber.no smoke no poke

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,837 ✭✭✭Doctors room ghost

Give her stick Sligo joe.throw them on the front if she’s a front wheel drive and light them from under her at traffic lights.punish her lad.nothing worse then throwing away tyres with plenty tread left on them.you will break the lads hearts in the Tyre shop if you tell them to take them tyres off if they aren’t as bald as an egg.plant the footeen

Pirelli P7 or P Zero all the way.

Plus 1 on this. The P7's are unreal.

But sure that difference is still there even when new.

I just had another look there.
They're Vredstein Hi-Trac. Manufactured in 2011. Looking at the condition of them there's no way they've been on it that long. The car is front wheel drive. I think I'll put them on the front and use them till the next NCT.

Definitely what I'd do. Just keep a close eye on them for any signs of degradation.

As suggested already though, When you are replacing them the Pirelli P7 are a great tyre

    Until you've tried a good tyre :D

Michelin Pilot Sports, have had N2 rated and Ps3's and moving on to PS4s now. Best tyre by far.

Had Michelin's before, worst tyre i ever had for wear.

That's weird - Michelins are universally acclaimed for their durability...

    Michelin Primacy 3

Wore out a set of 4 on a Mondeo in 15,000kms

Even the best of the best have flaws.

Pilot sports are designed for outright grip and handling, durability would be down the list of priorities.
I'm happy if I get 12k miles out of a set of 4.

I could keep them at rear axle if I am the only one driving the car then I wouldn't push it at corners much.

Would change it if they are a cheap size and I have a budget to buy similar or better tyre

I wouldn't put them in front or let my wife to drive it.

Good year eagle f1 is the tyre to get. Absolutely unbelievable grip both dry and wet, don't wear too fast even on a powerful car (12k from a tyre is unacceptable, I got 30k on a the front and 45k and still counting on the rear of a powerful fwd car) and well priced if you shop around.

tried to get those once, the supplier didn't have them in stock and i never asked for them since.

215/60/16 are my latest size tyres, so i might have a bit of bother there as well.

I've had them, very good tyres but not on par with michelin pilots for outright grip and handling.
Continental sport contact 6 are decent too.

    Thanks for all the advice.

I went to my local tyre supplier today and he took them off, had a good look at them and said they're perfect. He put two new ones on the front and said to go back to him before the next NCT and see what the story is then.

The tinfoil hat brigade won't agree with these results but it just shows how good michelin tyres are...and that's not even their best tyre.
