At what age would you say a man could realistically consider a vasectomy?

I'd say 20 is too young and 40-50 is fine. I'm in the middle ground at 30 and I feel like that sort of decision could be something I'd make this decade.

I understand doctors are slow to do it under the age of 30.

Some couples consider it when "we have enough children".

I think it should be a deathbed decision.

I had the snip at 28 and it was a difficult process to get agreement to carry it out.
Any procedure to restrict fertility in Ireland really seems a struggle unless ya already have multiple kids.
Anecdotally it's as much a problem for ladies as men.

Cryo a supply and have it done.

Considering getting it done but there's an obligatory 4 month cooling-off period and most doctors here only do it under general anaesthetic.

Thats not correct, in my case anyway.

I filled out forms and had one done approx a week later due to cancellations.

My gp clinic used to do them but no longer did.

Strangely when i went to my gp about it they asked had my wife consented, i asked had they ever asked my consent for any of her contraception decisions.

Mine was done in a GP clinic too.

As to the gaining your partner's consent, I had this happen too.
I was widowed and the doctor point blank asked did I honestly believe I had the right to make a decision that would deprive any future partner of the chance to have a child!

And the feminists think they are the only ones with contraception issues!

That's definitely not the case in Ireland. Don't know anyone that's had it done under general. In my case iirc, it was make the appointment, get sent out an information pack and DVD, go to the appointment, have a consultation with the doctor, have the procedure with the doctor with a local anaesthetic and it's all over in about fifteen minutes. Rest up for a couple of days then send off two samples after a couple of months to get the all clear. A very simple process.

    What?
I was restricted in my choice, is that not a valid grounds for concern/comparison?
Or does my body, my choice not work both ways?

Yeah, I might see is it possible to get it done next time I'm over.

Got done in a clinic in Donnybrook a few years ago. The only cooling off period was between initial appointment and procedure being done a week later under locsl
    . Drove home

How much is the operation in Ireland?

Of course it does, and reproductive autonomy for both genders is a huge issue in this country.

It was your ridiculous assertion that feminists* think they're the only ones who have issues I took exception to.

When I got my tubal ligation they asked me was my husband ok with it so it works both ways. I was 31 getting it done, I have 2 kids already, my youngest was 8,in those 8 years I had never changed my mind about wanting more so they did it no problem. They did ask would my husband not get a vasectomy as it is an easier op but he has a blood clotting disorder so can't.

Sterilisation ≠ contraception. Women also get asked about partner's consent when booking a sterilisation (which FYI, is much more difficult to get a doctor to agree to than a vasectomy)

I'm getting a lot of conflicting information, and there's very little of it available for France. I'm seeing anywhere from 60 to 600 and between 65 and 100 % reimbursed by social security. Might be better just to ring around.

Okay I admit I don't really understand the mechanics but doesn't stop sperm from combining with seamen? If so don't you get awfully frustrated with never properly 'emptying the sac' as it were? Or can you just go and go? Always wondered and I suppose AH is the place to get considerate answers :pac:

    You still ejaculate as normal.
No blue balls syndrome or backed up feeling after the 1st week or so ;) if ya get me!

An ex of mine had it done - from his point of view, everything was as before in terms of orgasm and ejaculate, no noticeable difference. From my point of view, everything was also the same - volume, texture, smell, taste :o

Vasectomised, a very attractive trait in a man.

I guess the reason I started this thread was about what general age a man could make such a decision, not the technicalities of getting it done.

Mine was done about 8-10 years ago. Simple process. Local anesthetic, chatted to the doctor during the process. Drove home.

However, with the male pill under development, hopefully, with time this procedure will become redundant. The day when men can control their own fertility without having to turn it off permanently, cannot arrive quickly enough.

I got it done about 4-5 years ago so about 35-36. We had two kids and we knew we weren't going to have anymore so it felt like the natural decision to make.

My husband had it done a few months ago (38). No cooling off period, no anaesthetic, went into work after it.
