I replaced 1 front shock today on my car and it was a fecking nightmare but I got it done in the end, 4 hours later.. but when im driving there’s a bit of vibration coming through the steering, its not terrible just noticeable. I'm doing the other shock next Sunday do I need to get the wheels realigned after ?

    Hi JJJJNR

Wheel alignment won't stop vibration through the steering, I would suggest the shock wasn't fitted correctly, did you replace the upper shock mount and spring also?
    also
When you jack up the car (wheel off the ground) is there movement between the top of the shock and and where it attaches to the car?

There was no movement and everything lined up correctly, I didn't replace the spring or top mount just the shock. The springs didn’t lose any of their paint so didn't see the point esp at 90 euro each. I suppose replacing the mounts might be a good idea though.

Check the obvious stuff first... loose wheel nuts??... loose ball joint, I’m guessing you would have noticed if top mount/turntable was in poor condition.
Alignment should be fine unless you took on and off the wishbone.

I would actually recommend a four wheel alignment after you do the other side, changing front shocks can affect the camber.

Depending on the car a shock change can effect camber.
Sometimes a top mount that is worn can work very poorly after a shock change. I found that a few times myself.
    What car is it?

Still highly unlikely that after the shock has being changed that the camber is affected that badly. My money is on something loose.
Your going to have to back track through everything. And if it was me and I was getting shaking through the steering after changing a shock I’d be putting it straight back up on the lift and not driving it.
    Check wishbone
    Balljoint
    Trackrod end
    Roll bar
    Wheel studs
    Calliper if u removed it
    Etc etc

Thanks lads... was the wheel nuts as I thought I had enough time to do both sides I cracked open both but only did one side back up... luckily got it before anything nasty happened.. lesson learned.
