Lost key. What to do now?

    Hi,

I lost my main key yesterday while walking to my sister's, which is less than a minute away from where I parked the car. I've got a spare which works, but I'm worried that anyone who has found the key can simply press the button, see the lights flash, and jump in.

Will I need to replace the immobiliser to prevent this?

    Cheers for any advice!

Get a chain on the steering wheel for a start

You can have your existing key and a new second key along with the immobilizer reprogrammed by a dealer. This would make the lost key useless. Check your insurance policy and lost/stolen keys might be covered under your existing policy.

Also might be worth checking first with the nearest Garda station to see if someone found it and dropped it in there.

The chance of an actual low life scum bag finding your key are actually quite slim.

I'll give the dealer a call, cheers. Would claiming on insurance not cause issues? I'm due a renewal right now, and many of the online forms ask whether you've made claims for even minor stuff.

I've tried calling the property section of the Garda station, but no one is picking up. I'll try again later.

True, but the chances of mischievous kids finding them are high. Someone has definitely found them, or I would have found them. It's only a tiny distance from where I parked my car to the door of my sister's apartment block.

Get a price from the dealer first and then decide if you want to claim. Also take note that it might not be worth claiming if you have to pay the excess on your policy also.

Regarding the Garda Station - probably better off popping in there in person if it's not too far away.
