In a competitive situation, Spyglass Media Group’s TV division has optioned Stephen King’s latest novel The Institute to develop as a limited series, with David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies) and Jack Bender (Lost), the same creative team behind the critically acclaimed Mr. Mercedes, also based on a King novel, attached. The announcement marks the first television acquisition for Spyglass and was made by Lauren Whitney, President of Television for Spyglass. Additionally, Spyglass has set a multi-year first look deal with Bender to develop future projects for Spyglass, overseen by Whitney.

The project marks a reunion for Kelley and Bender who have worked together on Mr. Mercedes, DirecTV’s Audience Network’s adaptation of King’s Bill Hodges Trilogy that has been renewed for a third season

NBCUniversal’s newly named Peacock streaming service will feature several original series, the company said Tuesday, including a pair of reboots from the vaults: a newly unveiled Saved By the Bell with original castmembers including Elizabeth Berkley and Mario Lopez, and Punky Brewster, which returns original star Soleil Moon Frye as a grown-up version of her former character.

Fox has given a series commitment to a multi-camera sitcom that will reunite The Big Bang Theory stars Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik.

The popular duo will star in Carla, which is based on the U.K. series Miranda. Here’s the official logline from Warner Bros. TV, which will produce the comedy for Fox: “Carla (Bialik) is a 39-year-old woman who struggles every day against society and her mother to prove that you cannot have everything you want — and still be happy, which is why she spent the money her parents set aside for her wedding to open a cat cafe in Louisville, Ky.”

Parsons and Bialik will also executive-produce the sitcom, which WBTV says was sold in a “highly competitive situation.”

The CW is moving forward with another Arrow spinoff headlined by Katherine McNamara, Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy reprising their Arrow roles in the new superhero series.

The new offshoot, which was teased at TCA by the CW boss Mark Pedowitz, will center around Mia Smoak, known as Green Arrow, and the Canaries Laurel Lance and Dinah Drake.

The project, which comes from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros Television, is being set up as a backdoor pilot that will air as episode from the upcoming eighth and final season of Arrow. It will be written by Beth Schwartz, Marc Guggenheim, Jill Blankenship and Oscar Balderrama.

The CW’s The Flash also originally was developed as an Arrow planted spinoff before a decision was made to turn it into a standalone pilot.

Comic books continue to be the gifts that keep on giving (for TV executives, at least). HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s forthcoming streaming service, has ordered to pilot DMZ, an adaptation of Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli’s DC Comics series.

Described as a futuristic drama, DMZ is set in America during a second civil war, which has turned Manhattan into a demilitarized zone, destroyed and isolated from the rest of the world.

Per the official logline, the potential series “chronicles the harrowing journey of a fierce female medic who saves lives while desperately searching for her lost son. But as she contends with the gangs, militias, demagogues and warlords that control this lawless no man’s land, she becomes the unlikely source of what everyone here has lost: hope.”

Roberto Patino (Westworld, Sons of Anarchy) will serve as showrunner, writer and executive producer, while Oscar nominee Ava DuVernay — who is coming off the Emmy-winning success of Netflix’s When They See Us — will direct and exec-produce.

Filming on the DMZ pilot will begin in early 2020, while HBO Max is set to launch in spring of that year.

HBO has picked up a series adaptation of the “Maniac Cop” film franchise from Nicolas Winding Refn, the network announced Thursday.

Set in Los Angeles, “Maniac Cop” is told through “a kaleidoscope of characters, from cop to common criminal,” according to HBO. “A killer in uniform has uncaged mayhem upon the streets. Paranoia leads to social disorder as a city wrestles with the mystery of the exterminator in blue – is he mere mortal, or a supernatural force?”

Refn will serve as showrunner, director and executive producer on the adaptation via his newly launched company byNWR Originals. “Universal Soldier” director John Hyams will also serve as an executive producer on the HBO and Canal+ series.

ike the original series, created by Albert S. Ruddy & Leslie Greif, the reboot, in which Walker is getting a female partner, will explore morality, family, and rediscovering our lost common ground. It centers on Cordell Walker (Padalecki), a widower and father of two with his own moral code, who returns home to Austin after being undercover for two years, only to discover there’s harder work to be done at home. He’ll attempt to reconnect with his children, navigate clashes with his conservative family, and find unexpected common ground with his new partner (one of the first women in Texas Rangers’ history), while growing increasingly suspicious about the circumstances surrounding his wife’s death.


I hear Texas native Padalecki had been looking for an opportunity to stay close to home for his next series and sparked to the idea of revisiting Walker, Texas Ranger. Walker is believed to be a straight reboot, in the vein of CBS’ Magnum PI and MacGyver, with a new incarnation of the beloved title character, played by Padalecki, vs. a sequel where the new lead is a descendant of the protagonist in the original series, who was played by Chuck Norris.

Padalecki and Fricke executive produce Walker with Rideback’s Lin and Lindsey Libertore for CBS Studios.

From the moment word of Walker got out, there had been great enthusiasm for the project at the CW where Supernatural has been an institution, with its stars Padalecki and Jensen Ackles revered by CW fans and enjoying a very close relationship with the network’s president and Supernatural superfan Mark Pedowitz.

As Supernatural is ending its 15-season run, Pedowitz had made it clear that the door at the network was wide open for the creative team and talent of the show to return anytime. “You will always have a home here, and you will always have a personal fan in me,” he said at TCA in August. Because of Pedowitz’s strong affinity for Padalecki and Ackles and because of Supernatural‘s legacy at the network, I hear landing Walker was very important for the CW boss, who spearheaded the network’s aggressive bid.

Given its pedigree and Padalecki’s involvement, Walker a considered an instant leading contender for the CW’s 2020-21 lineup, along with the new Arrowverse spinoff. The CW has been high on reboots in the past few years with Charmed, Dynasty and Roswell all making it to the schedule and scoring renewals.

The original 1993 Walker, Texas Ranger aired on CBS for eight seasons and spawned a followup TV movie, the 2005 Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire.

The Hobbit and Poldark star Aidan Turner has been cast as Leonardo da Vinci in the drama series about the celebrated Renaissance artist’s life and work.

U.S. showrunner Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files) and Brit writer Steve Thompson (Sherlock) are behind the eight-episode series, which has a working title Leonardo. The show will chart da Vinci’s achievements in various fields.

Directing will be Daniel Percival, who recently collaborated with Spotnitz on The Man in the High Castle. Producing are Lux Vide and Spotnitz’s Big Light Productions. Production is due to get underway later this year.
