Buying a car before passing driving test - bad idea?

    Hi all

I’m waiting impatiently for RSA to announce when driving tests will resume as mine was cancelled due to covid. I was due to have mine on April 1st which was about 2 weeks after they were cancelled so I’m hoping when they’re up and running I won’t have to wait too long. My predicament is I’ve found a car I’ve wanted for ages at a really good price. Should I go for it ? I’m just afraid I’ll fail my test and god only knows when I’ll get another shot with the backlog. It’ll be my second attempt so I’m hopeful I’ll pass but worried I’ll have a lovely car sitting in the driveway for months. Any ideas ?

    I don't think so.
You will pass the test at some stage, and then you have the car you like already bought.

Irish Times mentioned yesterday that driving lessons/tests can resume Mon 29th June.

You should just go for it and buy it! You'll have it for when you pass. Good luck

If you can afford the car and insurance then get it. It's much easier to practice if you have your own car.

How do you get the car home if you can't drive it? Do they deliver?
Does buying a car before you learn mean you can't test drive it?

I think buying is a good idea, I'm just curious about the logistics. :)

I’m planning on my dad coming with me to drive it home (only 20 minutes from my house) so hoping that won’t be a problem. I’ve done all my EDT lessons so I technically know how to drive it’s just a case of the legalities being on the road. I can drive as long as I have someone with me that holds a full licence for more than 2 years

Car tests are not starting that early

As for a test drive, I don’t think I can with only a provisional. Hoping to go on one with my dad. Obviously won’t be the same as driving it myself but I’m definite on the car so I will learn to drive it !

You can't test drive on a provisional, but some dealers allow driving around the industrial estate they are based in (I had 2 offers), so you can ask around. I brought my brother to test drive cars with me though. I ended up driving home the car I bought myself though.

I see the Irish times is now reporting that driving tests are entitled to restart from 29th June but Dept says it’ll be late July before they re-start.

As advised by my instructor, it's good if you have your own car, especially about half way through your ibt. You will be more comfortable in your test, as all your practicing will be in the same car as your test. You will know the feel of the car.

I bought my polo after 6 lessons and felt it was a good choice.

Oh really ? I’m glad to hear that, I put a deposit down on the car yesterday !! 🙈😅 I’m so excited to get it, just dying for them to confirm a date for when tests will be back up and running, hoping it will be before phase 4 !
