    Hi all,

I've recently come to the realisation that my old mattress is really not much better than kipping on the floor. I had a memory foam one for a few years that kind of wore out fairly quickly although it was relatively inexpensive. I'm looking now at the moment in some walk in retail shops and some of the prices seem a little excessive for ones that are comfortable enough. I was looking at some online retailers like emma and another one irish company called easca. They seem fairly reasonable, but really depends on what they are gonna send ye I suppose.

Anyone have any experience with online mattress or bedding retailers?

    Thanks,
    Mick

I wouldn’t buy a mattress online without lying on it. It’s important to make sure you find it comfortable.

Mattresses are one of those things that you get what you pay for. It doesn't mean that you personally will necessarily find the most expensive the most comfortable, but certainly in my experience if you pay more for a mattress you will be more satisfied with it.

Totally agree you need to try mattresses. Take your time, go into the shop when its a bit quiet and just lie on all of them, several times if necessary. Not sure what the situation is with Covid though.

I have a pocket sprung with memory foam top layer and I love it. Not everyone likes memory foam though.

Yeah I agree on that one. I went into a few show rooms to have a feel for what was on offer. It's a good point to make that dearer doesn't always mean better. I actually found some of the more expensive ones not to my liking. Some were far too soft. I settled on a nice medium pocket sprung one.

Cheers for the advice and suggestions. The pocket sprung mattresses seem to be were it's at.

    Cheers!

Which mattress did you go for?

I've three bedrooms to furnish so budget is very tight but don't want to have the rooms looking new and lovely only to spoil things with poor/cheap mattresses.

I got the Emma mattress. Awful thing just had to go out and buy a Respa. The Emma is so hot and not particularly comfortable. I got a really bad stiff neck from it too. The pillows are also awful. How it got the no.1 ratings it achieves online is anyones guess.

As a follow up, I settled on a Respa bed no pun intended. I bought it in a Michael Murphy showroom but you can get them in other places too. Have it around 6 months and it is probably the best thing I have ever bought. I did pay for it but totally worth it. My back feels so much better having bought it.

Bigmickey also have a great selection too as people have pointed out. So I think this trend has been a success

We bought a Hypnos Orthocare 7 pocketsprung mattress last August, after having a Harrisson matress for approx 18 years. The sales guy said this was the closest brand if we had been happy with the Harrisson which we were. From memory, it cost approx €1k back in 2002, and this one was about €750 on sale. Definitely worth the money!

Anyone bought a king sized mattress lately that they're happy with? What was it?

Interested in this thread as well….currently not enjoying an Ikea hybrid memory foam mattress purchased about 1.5 years ago…….way too warm and I'm kicking myself I didn't pay more attention to the mixed reviews online. I will probably be changing it quite soon but did a little search of Harrison/King Koil mattress reviews and came across a fair few poor reviews of them as well. Had heard that horse hair (or natural fill) pocket sprung mattresses were good but don't see many stockists in Ireland. Don't want to throw good money after bad so anyone's opinion on this would be well received!

In my experience memory foam mattresses are a bit of a con. They feel great when you lie on them for like 20 mins but have no where near the firmness or stability to give you a good night sleep. Medium pocket sprung are the best for most people.

I bought a 1000 pocket sprung Single Respa mattress a few years ago after a memory foam job and the difference on my back was night and day.

Its still going strong but in the market now for a bigger one.

I'll not be going anywhere near memory foam this time….not so much a comfort issue more the yoke is blisteringly warm, even in winter. Tried everything (covered with duck feather mattress topper etc) but it's like sleeping on a radiator. Never had that problem with other mattresses, think we had a Silentnight pocket sprung one before. Don't want necessarily to spend big on what seems, based on a cursory look at google reviews anyway, to be a little hit and miss. King Koil well recommended on here but some of the reviews are atrocious, mind you there are always negative reviews if you look. Ditto Harrisson albeit in general reviews are more positive. If anyone else has a good or bad experience to share I'd welcome it.

The thing about reviews is that they might not match with your taste or needs etc. so you have to take with a pinch of salt.

I will say the Irish makers generally are good quality, the likes of Respa, King koil etc have some very good quality.

I'd suggest just going into the likes of Michael Murphy's, Des Kelly or EZ living and lying for a bit on a few to get a feel for what you think would suit.

IMO if you can afford to pay for a good mattress you should. You will spend a quarter of your life lying on one.
