Booked a B&B in Killarney a few weeks ago. I emailed them shortly to confirm that they were providing breakfast and got no reply. My wife got them on the phone today and despite still advertising B& B with breakfast on their website. I am trying to get them on the phone and have emailed but cannot get a reply.

Anyone know what the position is if I cancel i.e. am I right in thinking they have no basis to keep any deposit??

Do they understand what the initials B&B stand for?

Have they confirmed to you or your wife that breakfast is not included?

What did you sign up to?
Some places may offer B&B or bed only.
In terms of your deposit, what was said in the agreement you entered (was it online or telephone or what)?

Confused by your post too- have they confirmed breakfast or not?

What did your booking say? I’ve often booked B&B without breakfast as I either didn’t want it or didn’t suit. Not unusual

    Update!

Got them on the phone after a few more attempts and no replies to emails. Owner confirmed that 'due to covid' they have not been providing breakfast for the last year. I pointed out that I booked B&B and as it was not available I would have to cancel. He accepted that I was cancelling and I informed him that I expected no fees to be applied.

I have asked him to acknowledge my email confirming same. Despite a lot of very good reviews he seemed very disorganised or maybe was just chancing his arm- I had to point out their website stated rates include free parking and 'delicious homemade breakfast'.

The website was probably made for them by someone else, so they are not in a position to update it regarding breakfast. Their lack of response to emails should tell you how tech savvy they are.

'No breakfast' doesn't really surprise me in these times.

I disagree. I've seen both employers and employees using covid as an excuse to wrangle their way out of responsibilities.

Why? Hotels are now allowed serve drinks and food indoors to guests. If a B&B can give you a bed for the night and use of a bathroom (shared or otherwise), there’s no reason why they can’t give you a breakfast.

Guidelines allow breakfast, page 4 2nd item in table, and 42

I'm a little baffled, if anyone books a B&B surely the second B stands for breakfast. I don't get the argument re not being able to service some sort of breakfast service, whether it's a staggered service, reduced menu or from a tray in the guests bedroom. Surely if the premises lacks IT skills to update their Web site, the telephone is an amazing tool to follow up on any bookings.

The forced breakfast is the worst part of staying in a B&B with the whole what'll you have for breakfast lark the night before you head out on a rake of pints. How about I'll stay in bed till an hour after the official check out and I'll tear the shirt off the back of anyone who comes knocking on my door.

But I suppose OP it is poor form if it's something you're looking forward to and they're advertising it.

Have you ever tried 'I'll skip breakfast, thanks'?

All you have to do is promise to be out by xxx a.m. and they'll be fine with it.

Staff and the lack of is most likely the reason why places are offering reduced service.

Sounds like someone is just managing the B&B and cutting overheads
