The Olympic Federation has indicated that athletes had to be registered by 4th July. So presumably those selected already know if theyre going. And those who didnt make it already know.

I wonder has there been an appeal or two hence why it hasn’t been announced? That is of one can appeal being excluded from a relay team/squad.

To be honest the latest Olympic news release makes no sense.
They state that Team Ireland consists of 79 officially selected athletes. By my reckoning there is 78 (but a Dressage rider was indicated and no official announcement). They dont seem to be counting Travelling Reserves.
    For the record Cycling 7, Equestrian 7 (inc Dressage), Boxing 7, Diving 2, TKD 1, Triathlon 2. Gymnastics 2, Canoeing 1, Rowing 13, Sailing 3, Mod Pentathon 1, Badminton 1, Golf 4, Hockey 16, Rugby 12.
This "78 or 79" does not seem to include 7 Athletics already announced.
They say the closing date for registering athletes is 4pm Monday July 5th.
They say that there are over 110 spots confirmed and official announcements still to come for five sports which I think are
Swimming (six individuals and at least one relay team qualified)
    Judo (2 qualified)
    Shooting (one invitational place)
    Dressage maybe 1.
And Athletics.....maybe 26 (7 Road athletes already announced) 4 Entry standards (Mageean Finn, Barr, English) 4 Men rankings (2x200, 1x1500, 1 Walk) 7 Female Rankings (P Healy, Lavin, Flanagan SHealy, 3x800) and the relay maybe just four as Healy and Barr are already o plane)
    But all of this 78 or 79 plus (26, 10, 1, 2,1) is 117 ish and higher than 110.
So as OFIs maths is a bit questionable maybe the date 5th July is not right.
But if the relay athletes are already nominated, selected and even registered, then appeals are too late (presumably).
I would have expected appeal/s or whatever.
More so I would have expected "leaks"

5th July was the deadline for federations to register names with IOC. The OFI held off naming athletes and swimmers because if some other countries decline their quotas, they can be redistributed. That’s why they haven’t given an official final tally yet.

They’ve named athletes in sports where they know that won’t happen (ie they know where Ireland won’t gain anything)

They’re also announcing teams one or two a day for maximum exposure

Yes, I saw the "maximum exposure" as kinda build up and one team per day gives a kinda equal billing to "big" and "small sports".
But thanx for pointing out the "quota" thing...
apparently 81 was the highest total ever sent. We are way past that now. (of course team sports help but a good trend to see)

78 to Atlanta is officially our biggest team.

Even without the hockey and rugby teams we’d be at our highest ever

The most sports we’ve entered at a games has been 14 and we’re in 19 for Tokyo

Rhasidat Adeleke through to the women's 100m final in the European Juniors very comfortably. Israel Olatunde finished 3rd in his semi, 10th overall.

Adeleke's final is at 15:20 tomorrow.

Mid-Ulster have a gem in Nick Griggs, born in December 2004 and into the final of the u20 3000M. Had not heard of him until his win at nationals a few weeks ago, dealing with a close bereavement aswell recently makes his rise all the more remarkable.

We have had many distance talents in Irish athletics over the last few years but from his performance today he looks like the real deal. Expect him to be in with a shout of a medal aswell this weekend.

Griggs looked good, so to mcphillips.

will be suprised if Rhasidat doesn't win and set a pb, she has cruised through, only the dutch girl has gone below 11.40 and that was a pb slower than hers.

Gold for Adeleke. 11.34. Clear win. 200m heats in 2 hours time.

  • Site Banned Posts: 12,341 ✭✭✭✭Faugheen

She just jogged to a 23.20 in her heat. Nobody else in this field has run anywhere near that in their lives and she has just done so at a canter.

    Incredible.

Robert McDonnell very impressive, I must say, winning his 200m heat from lane 2. 21.16 and a very clear margin of victory.

Adeleke was ridiculous in the 200 heat.

    Rhashidat cruises through,

McDonnell just about gets in too.

Gold and a national record in nearly still conditions for Adeleke. 22.90!

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,061 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

She's a ferocious talent. Goodness knows what she'll be like in two or three years time if she keeps on improving like this.

How on earth did she not make the Olympic team btw? She's arguably the No.1 athlete in the country at the moment and ahead of Thomas Barr and Ciara Mageean in terms of talent.

the 4*400 squeaked into the final tommorrow, be interestung what happens if they let her run.

  • Registered Users Posts: 933 ✭✭✭jamule

    O'conner up to 5th in the decathlon, 4 pbs from 5 events . <50points from 3rd.

    So unlucky for her

  • Registered Users Posts: 933 ✭✭✭jamule

    holy fook, griggs destroys them

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,114 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

    That is unreal!

What an incredible day. Leading the medal table after three days is a great achievement for our little island.

Two outstanding performances from Griggs and McPhillips in what were stacked fields.

Adeleke was always going to win gold barring disaster. She was the clear standout in that race. Nobody got close to her.

Full videos of all the finals are up now at this link:

Unreal wins from the middle distance lads, such brave and commanding performances great to see from green vests.

The 2 UK athletes and the Dutchman in McPhillips race appeared to run fairly slow races compared to what they are capable of.

Griggs ran 8:17, wonder what happened yer man Botolin, his SB is 8:04.

Adeleke is gonna get an Olympic medal in Paris.

Championship races are completely different ball games to races that are paced. The fact McPhillips was able to run so close to his PB suggests he'd be much quicker if the race had a pacemaker.
