Not sure I get your point. It does protect and I'm sure people can pop in and out with their pints.

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,366 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

But either indoor dining is opening up or it isn’t for those vaccinated. Why should people need to pop back in and out with their pints ? To be clear I won’t be going near a pub for at least two weeks after they open given my second dose date and then the week after that.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,699 ✭✭✭saabsaab

It just that it's Summer and it's nice to be outside having a pint. I presume time limits would be for inside?

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,952 ✭✭✭Degag

I'm one of those people and while i don't necessarily agree with the vaccine cert requirement i'm happy to go with it; seeing as:

    a) I'll be fully vaxed in a few weeks

    b) as should pretty much all the population over 18 i believe

    c) We have outdoor options. Some of which are pretty decent.

    d) It's a means to an end. Indoor hospitality is opening which should only be viewed as a good thing.

Difficult for publicans to police. Puts them in a very awkward position and a lot probably wont. 50/50 that my local publican does i'd say.

People shouting discrimination need to get over themselves IMO. We've had 18 months of lockdowns where our freedoms have been infringed upon. I think we can take another couple of weeks of not getting access to an indoor pub if need be.

Rise in cases is worrying. 1000 today. What will happen if they reach 3000 or 5000. I wouldn't be too optimistic but we are very close to the point where we just need to get on with things.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,191 ✭✭✭howiya

It literally is discrimination though. The government decided who could and couldn't get the vaccine which was mostly based on age. Now they're linking your access to goods and services to that initial decision to discriminate against you on the basis of your age.

Now the people comparing themselves to Rosa Perks or calling it medical apartheid need to wind their neck in.

I won't die on a hill over access to a pub or restaurant but I can see why people are pissed off with it.

The time to bring this in would be when we're struggling to get the last stragglers vaccinated. Not when everybody hasn't had the same opportunity to be vaccinated.

If it's a choice between letting vaccinated people in now or waiting for the "last stragglers" then i choose the former. Cause it's a step forward.

There would be people complaining either way. A large cohort both ways.

Discrimination, maybe. But fairly light in the grand scheme, as you alluded to yourself. I think we have to suck it up and hope that it only lasts the few weeks that it should.

And the only point I was making was for those who are vaccinated, why is there a time limit. I’m not going to going to a pub for couple more weeks which is fine but for those who have gotten the vaccine and have been told to live again then if they want to go to their local pub then why can’t they sit there for the night and enjoy themselves. That’s my only issue with the whole thing. I can’t go into a pub because I’m not fully vaccinated and I get that.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,191 ✭✭✭howiya

How does it only last a few weeks? They won't have all adults fully vaccinated till September.

I'm similar to yourself. First dose got. Should have second dose in three weeks time.

What about people with allergies to the vaccine? Will they ever be allowed in the door? You've the antivaxxers too although I'm not really bothered with them to be honest.

I don't see it as a means to an end as there will always be unvaccinated people so I don't get how it will only last a few weeks.

I also don't see it as a step forward. Maybe two steps back and one forward but we had indoor dining last summer without any of this.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,952 ✭✭✭Degag

Yeah, the time limit is infuriating. Some places not too strict on it thankfully.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,952 ✭✭✭Degag

Well, they should have everyone from mid 30s up fully vaccinated within a month or so i believe. Then you have quite alot of the age group below this availing of the one shot Janssen, So a large cohort of people fully done within this time frame. So it seems to me that anyone who wants a vaccine at the moment has the means to get one fairly quickly - at least that's my perception.

When we had indoor dining last year we only had a handful of cases. Like literally a handful - 4 or 5 everyday. Today we had 1000. So from that point of view i see it as a step forward, compared to the last few months where it was an infuriating "will they or wont they open the pubs" situation.

Do i fully agree with the whole reopening plan? No. But i see certain merit in it.

Fundamental problem is that there is no slack nor goodwill left for the government to do anything other than to reopen things. Way numbers are going there is even a case for actually closing down, but businesses cannot hold out any longer and respect for distancing/mask regulations is clearly in freefall.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,032 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

    Questions:

Why will they have time limits now for fully vaxed people and not in just say 6months time? What will be different then?

Why will unvaccinated people have to sit out side now and not in 6months time?

I’m in Portugal and they have introduced restrictions on indoor dining at the weekends.(covid is a weekend thins :-\ ) You need the digital green cert or you can do an antigen test. The test costs €3 in the pharmacy. That’s the key difference, other countries follow the science, Ireland is inexplicably against antigen testing

Ironically, this eatery in Derry which was used as an example of Southerners heading to, has been closed due to covid outbreak among their staff

So July 26th is now the target date but guess what is happening the following weekend . The August Bank Holiday

Me thinks the rise in numbers will be used to delay once again. Really really hope I'm wrong

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,484 ✭✭✭Allinall

Because the hope is that in six months time the virus won’t be as much in circulation in the community.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,840 ✭✭✭Dickie10

i would be genuinely shocked if they open indoor in 10 days time. numbers will rise and tony will say no and thats that. indoor might not open til mid sept after schools.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,480 ✭✭✭giveitholly

You are probably right, but if they can't open to fully vaccinated people will they ever open at this stage?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,840 ✭✭✭Dickie10

I dunno but seems there using this as a chance to try and expose the population to a different way of socialising and hope we dont end up like english soccer fans, that we only head out and drink when having food and head off home at 11 pm. i have a feeling thats why theres no djs allowed throw out a few tunes or a guy on a guitar, they want us european and act like middle aged people. eating at our own tables , smile politely at our neighbours and mind our own business. they genuinely seem to want to change the idea of lads wandering into pubs lying at the bar all day and dipping into and out of conversation all night with everyone and anyone, we used to call this mingling. I definitley believe we will see a huge gap in 5 years or so of marriages and births as people will have this huge space of 2 years where very few relationships sparked off.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,196 ✭✭✭✭stephenjmcd

    Some amount of nonsense.

You want to dip into a pub and have a pint fire away and do it, did it myself after football this evening, lovely evening to sit out with the lads and a few pints

During the middle of winter? And when the actual vulnerable category will be due their booster shots?

Their hope is admirable. Just like I still hope Tim Henman might win Wimbledon one year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,824 ✭✭✭ShooterSF

How does that work? Does the pharmacist have you take the test there? Do they ID you and then give you a cert with your name for the pub? Otherwise it seems ripe to manipulation

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,226 ✭✭✭Valhallapt

I went to the pub to watch the Euros. Bought the test in the local pharmacy, went to the pub and got a seat outside and did the test infront of the bar man, took like 10 seconds, then waited 10 minutes and got the all clear and went inside.

Other option is to pay €10 to the pharmacy and you do the test infront of them, they then give a cert with your ID number on it, its valid for 48 hours.

All certs are open to manipulation, I hope there would be very few people who would ignore a positive test and fake a positive.

Its only in Ireland where we don't use antigen, PCR is expensive so people are motivated to fake them. Rest of Europe used antigen to reopen everything months ago.

Come to Spain, no rules around going into pubs and restaurants. Just the usual, wear a mask until you are sitting down and sanitize your hands coming in.

Some places have a system where there is a QR code on your table. You scan it, order through the app and drinks/food brought to you. Then when you are done you request your bill through it and they bring the card machine to you. Great way to protect staff

  • Registered Users Posts: 37,553 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Feel Tony is against antigen tests because how manipulating they can be and us tick paddys aren't smart enough to use them right

    Infuriating

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,824 ✭✭✭ShooterSF

This sounds really cool. I'd be all for a system like that brought in here as someone who as a lot of issues with the one that is being implemented. The option to do the antigen test at the pub would also offer an option to those that are upset at the idea of having to hand over their medical information to a bar.

Rug to be pulled on indoor hospitality once again next week I reckon

    Numbers to high etc

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,258 ✭✭✭Cork2021

President signs it into law they’ll find it hard to keep it closed especially when it’s vaccinated only.

if they don’t do it now, they’ll never do it! It’ll never be safe! It never was without risk

Its back to the old playbook. The can has been kicked, so all that is left is for the yank.
