Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Europa Conference League 2021/2022

This is very early for this thread, I know. But I think this is something that has (bad) ramifications for Irish football. The 2021/2022 season will see the start of a new tertiary tier European competition that's below the Champions League and the Europa League. It's the kind of thing that sounds initially good in practice (allowing teams from lower ranked nations to compete in European football), but in practice, it looks structured in such a way that will leave Irish teams far worse off than the currently are.

The new set up will grant one Irish team a Champions League qualification spot (the league winner, naturally). No Irish teams at all will be granted a Europa League spot. Three Irish teams will go into the Europa Conference League qualification stage (2nd, 3rd place in the League + the FAI cup winner).

The Irish league winner goes into the first stage of Champions League qualification. They have to go through 4 qualifying rounds to make the group stage (as is the current situation). To just get through the first qualifying round, Shamrock Rovers could easily end up playing either the Greek, Swedish, Norwegian, Serbian, Croatian league champions. The ask at just this initial stage is absolutely huge. Also, unlike last season, losing the first qualification round of the Champions League no longer means dropping into the Europa League. You lose your first round Champions League qualifier (like Dundalk did this season) and you go straight into the Conference League. If Shamrock Rovers can someone get a decent draw and get passed the first qualifying round, but lose in the second round, only then are they parachuted into the Europa League. After that, they will still have to play two further qualifiers to make the Europa League group stage.

If Shamrock Rovers have been given a slightly harder route to the Europa League, it looks far worse for the other teams dumped into the Conference League. For a start, no one else will even get a Europa League spot. Secondly, as a tertiary competition, the prize money involved will likely be less than the Europa League. It gets worse still, all three Irish teams will have to play four qualification rounds just to make the group stages. Whatever tiny chance the Irish league winners have, anyone in the Conference League probably has little chance. The final Conference League qualification round for the group stages will see the Spanish, English, Italian, Germany, French and Portuguese teams join at this stage, combined with a whole pile of teams that were beaten in the final qualification round the the Champions League/Europa League. Short of some sort of miracle that saw Dundalk draw a Faroe Islands team for their final round qualifier, Irish teams have almost no hope of ever making the group stages of this tertiary competition.

It's crazy that they've managed to create a less prestigious competition and actually made it harder for lower ranked associations to compete in it. It's even worse for for some of the higher ranked associations. For example, Greece have virtually the same European places allocation as we have. One team starting at the first round of the Champions League qualification stage, no teams in the Europa League, three teams in the Conference League (the Greeks go in at round 2, rather than round 1 like we do).

The whole change to the format very much has the feel of the financial drawbridge being pulled up by the European elite.

Is there any info on prize money? Even one round in the Europa is substantial enough, especially outside of Dundalk/Rovers.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I haven't investigated it in detail but surely the bare maths of it make it easier for teams to get into the group stage.
Currently there is a 32 team CL and a 48 team EL = 80 teams in the group stages.
    Now there'll be 3 x 32 team competitions which = 96 teams. 16 extra places.

It also means that extra countries will definitely get a group stage spot. Currently 26 countries are guaranteed a group stage place, but looking at the wiki links in the OP this is now 34 countries mathematically guaranteed a representative. That the LOI hasn't managed to get into the top 34 leagues on coefficient and thus all our teams will have to play qualifiers is frankly terrible, but that's something that on us.

Prize money has been leaked by a French newspaper.

    https://www.newstalk.com/sport/prize-money-for-new-uefa-conference-league-finally-revealed-1200628#:~:text=According%20to%20L'%C3%89quipe%20however,%E2%82%AC390%2C000%20on%202020%2F21.
According to L'Équipe however, each of the 32 qualifying teams will be guaranteed €3million. By contrast, qualification for the group stage of the Europa League earns a club €3.63million, and the Champions League in excess of €15million - up €390,000 on 2020/21.

However, there are three qualifying rounds to reach the group stage of the Conference League.

Dundalk, Bohemians and Sligo Rovers can expect to enter in the first qualifying round.

Tottenham, Roma and Union Berlin are among those entering at the playoff round.
Good news it that the prize money for Europa Conference League group stages is actually slightly higher than last years prize money for the Europa League.

Format with some of the teams and seedings is here -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021%E2%80%9322_UEFA_Europa_Conference_League

Bad news is that it's looking like a real uphill battle for Irish teams to make the group stages.

Bohs and Sligo are in the first qualifying round and are unseeded. Whatever chance they have of winning their first qualifier, the second qualifier looks very difficult with seeded Swiss, Danish, Belgian, Dutch, Greek, Norwegian, Portuguese, Austrian teams being likely opposition.

Dundalk have a slightly easier path. They will be seeded for the first and second round, and maybe even the third round as well depending on how things pan out. They should be winning their first round, have a decent chance in the second round. Winning the third round is likely to be a remote chance, but you never know with a good draw and a decent result on the day. The final round looks an impossibility with the likes of Spurs, Villareal, Rennes, Union Berlin, and Roma dropping in, as well teams who were beaten in the Europa League third round qualifier (these will all be decent teams as well).

tldr - the new format really stinks for Irish teams.

Does it though? The previous best chance of a Europa spot was the team dropping down from the CL into a later qualifying round for it. That spot isn't affected and there is more chance to get a few wins in the Conference and boost the co-efficient maybe?

Always luck of the draw I guess but there is definitely a way of looking both sides.

I believe you can drop from CL qualifier, to EL qualifier, to EC qualifier, depending at what stage of each you are knocked out at. So potential for whoever's champion to pick up a few qualifying rounds with associated prize money.

Not much difference for teams going straight into EC, admittedly.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

That's not true. Since 2018-19, the League of Ireland champions have had the "luxury" of being able to lose the first CL qualifier and drop into the Europa League qualifiers (à la Dundalk). That was a small piece of compensation from UEFA to the lower leagues, for the extra CL group stage spots given to the top 4 leagues and the extra CL and EL qualifying rounds stuck in because of it.

Lo and behold, another squeeze only a few seasons later, the four highest ranked leagues in Europe keeping the extra group stage spots that were ceded to them by UEFA, while the crappy compensation package to the lower leagues gets even crappier because now the highish leagues need to be appeased by giving them a more exclusive Europa League. What a fùcking way to run a sport.

So the LOI champions will get a lesser consolation prize (Conference) if they lose the first CL qualifier. Five years ago, there was no consolation prize for a first round exit (the way it should be btw). You could be fooled into thinking that's progress until you look at the structure and access back then compared to now. The system was far from egalitarian but at this stage it's obscene.

It's immaterial really if it makes things slightly harder for LOI teams. If they are good enough they'll get more points to move up in the co-efficients regardless. We're talking minimal differences here.

Nothing will change till more people follow the league. I'm not the biggest Shels fan, but like football, so feel it's only right to go LOI and support it. That's the only way things will change. Two men and a dog at Shels games in Division 1, several thousand when they get promoted. Fans a disgrace. Club nearly out of existence cause they all fcuked off when times went bad.

Conference league or Europa or whatever, it's immaterial until Irish people go to games

Very good original post in this thread. I fully agree that it seems to be constructed to avoid cases where clubs like Dundalk can get into group stages and earn a large windfall. Funds being protected for clubs from the top countries.

Been looking through the details of the Europa Conference and the new Europa Leagues this morning.

One thing I haven't worked out, can someone explain whether or not teams go from the Europa Conference up into the Europa League at some stage during the season?

On one hand it seems not. I see it's run separately through to it's own final in Tirana in 2022, and some losing teams from the EL will drop into ECL, but not the other way around. (The ECL winner qualifies for the EL the following year.)

But in this description of the Europa League, it says: "The majority of teams involved in qualifying will have transferred from the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa Conference League". As if there is a transfer from ECL to EL at some stage?

    Anyone follow?

I disagree with the original post tbh.

If Irish football wants better outcomes in European Football and preferential access it needs to win more games and increase the coefficient. It should be easier to win games in the third tier and increase that coefficient. As the coefficient increases we should get more access to the upper two tiers.

If Irish league teams can't win games in the third tier and our coefficient stays low what is there to talk about?

We are being drawn against the exact same standard of teams we would have faced in the Europa League 1QR. The Europa League doesn't even have a 1QR or 2QR anymore. Where do you think those teams are playing? The Europa Conference is where. They've reduced the size of the EL down to 32 teams from 48 and dumped the rest into a 3rd tier competition.

The Europa Conference is a farce designed to wall off the CL & EL from the minnows.

All winnable for the Irish teams, though wouldn't be a shock if an Icelandic team beat either Sligo or Bohs. Dundalk are a joke shop at the moment but surely even they can beat a Welsh team?

Unless their players are more interested in bonuses then going through......

The Dundalk one has TNS vibes. Overpaid mercenaries up against a committed Welsh side. Newtown aren't anywhere near the level TNS would have been at though and they only finished 7th in a 12 team league last season.

Would it be the worst European loss for a LOI team? Cork losing to Niederkorn is also up there, as is Sligo Rovers losing to Vllaznia who were match fixing :o

I would say the worst, particualy in the context. We were also beaten by a 2nd division Icelandic team a couple of years later (5-1) but that was a cobbled together Bohs team and one of those games where once they took the lead we had to chase and ended up conceding to them on the break.

They are probably the 1st and 2nd worst results :o

Can't win games, get up the yard. Football is about winning games. Dundalk have earned success in European football over the years and fair play to them for it.

Okay? I never said anything about winning games. I was correcting your misinformed opinion that the Conference League makes it easier. It's the same teams in a new competition. Nothing has changed. Irish sides have been drawing Icelandic teams in Europe for years and it has happened again this year.

The Conference league is the lowest league, there has been a change in how teams drop down.

So in the Europa League and the Conference League there is 2 rounds of 16s one a play-off and one the proper round of 16.

So for the Europa League the 8 group winners will go directly into the proper round of 16, the 8 group runners-up will be joined by the 8 3rd placed teams from the Champions League in the play-off round with the winners of those 8 games going onto playing the group winners.

It is the same for the Conference League the 8 group winners will go into the proper round of 16 with the runners-up being joined with the 8 3rd placed teams in the Europa League in the play-off round.

This will allow the Champions League to stagger that round of 16 as usual.

So the teams drop downwards never up like you never seen teams from the Europa League go up to the Champions League.

Just the winners will go into the following seasons Europa League

It seems to be a mistake on the UEFA website where they say that "teams involved in [the Europa League] qualifying [round] will have transferred from the [...] UEFA Europa Conference League".

    This is directly from rte.ie

"Shamrock Rovers have been drawn against Slovakian outfit Slovan Bratislava in Champions League first qualifying round.
The first leg will take place on 6/7 July, with the return game in Tallaght on 13/14 July.
In 2019 Slovan Bratislava beat Dundalk 4-1 on aggregate in the third qualifying round of the Europa League.
It's a tough task for the Hoops, who are guaranteed a windfall of €810,000 as Ireland's Champions League representative.
Following a special one-off draw required to balance the entry list, Stephen Bradley's men will get a bye into the third round of Europa Conference League qualifying if they fail to get past the Slovakians."

Okay? I never said anything about winning games. I was correcting your misinformed opinion that the Conference League makes it easier. It's the same teams in a new competition. Nothing has changed. Irish sides have been drawing Icelandic teams in Europe for years and it has happened again this year.
Yea, that was my original complaint.

The new competition just pushes Irish teams into a lower status competition. They still have to play the same teams in the first round, and will have Champions League/Europa League teams parachuted in at later rounds. The nature of the seedings will ensure that Irish teams will struggle to build by co-efficient points, so they will always have tricky ties.

Dundalk have the best chance as a seeded team with the following possible second round opponents. Should they in their first round match, they'd probably be happy to get Tallinn again, Elfsborg on the other hand would be a nightmare.

    6 IF Elfsborg (SWE)
    7 Dunajská Streda (SVK)
    8 Levadia Tallinn (EST)/ St Joseph's (GIB)
9 Inter Turku (FIN) / Puskás Akadémia (HUN)
10 Dinamo Batumi (GEO) / Tre Penne (SMR)

Bohemians have the following possible opponents in the second round. The likes of Gent or Santa Clara would be horrific teams to get for just a second round qualifier.

    GROUP 5
    Seeded:
    1 Gent (BEL)
    2 AGF Aarhus (DEN)
    3 Dudelange (LUX)
    4 Hibernian (SCO)
    5 Santa Clara (POR)

Sligo have the following second round opponents, probably as difficult as what Bohs have.

    GROUP 9
    Seeded:
    1 Hajduk Split (CRO)
    2 Vojvodina (SRB)
    3 Aberdeen (SCO)
    4 Copenhagen (DEN)
    5 Rosenborg (NOR)

"Following a special one-off draw required to balance the entry list, Stephen Bradley's men will get a bye into the third round of Europa Conference League qualifying if they fail to get past the Slovakians."
That is great news, looks like they got lucky and get to skip the second round.

Bohs will play Dudelange of Luxembourg if they get past Stjarnan.

Sligo Rovers will play Rosenborg (again) if we get past FH.

I was very interested when I heard that they were creating a third competition. In my head I was thinking something along the lines of the EFL Trophy (the one for teams from League One and Two) where teams from the lower coefficient nations would likely be able to easily get teams into the Group Stages.

However as far as I can see it's unlikely even to be that. The LOI teams are likely to be facing the same old gate keeper teams from the higher ranked nations through 4 qualifying rounds. It's basically the same scenario they faced in the Europa League, except that if any of them do make it all the way to the group stages then they are far less likely to get a glamour tie from the biggest leagues.

Basically for the lower ranked nations, like Ireland, it's the worst of all worlds. Just as hard to qualify as before but without the same money or potential big ties if they do.

Looking ahead it seems that the Champions route is quite protected, in that there shouldn't be too many high quality teams ending up there. That is because from this round on teams losing in the CL will end up dropping to the EL qualifiers. it won't be until the playoffs that fresh teams, originating from the CL, drop into this tournament. In addition to that, all of the teams from the major leagues will end up in the Main route. That means that it's going to extremely difficult for Dundalk and especially Bohemians (due to their inferior ranking which will affect seeding) to qualify.

For Shamrock Rovers though they can already see all of their potential opponents for the third round and playoffs. It's the same teams that competed last week in the first-round of champions league qualifiers with the addition of Olympiacos, Young Boys, Red Star Belgrade and Omonia. However it gets even better, in that the best of those teams won't end up anywhere near the UECL since they'll either be still in the CL or will have dropped into the EL and stayed there.

In reality Rovers future opponents will be made up of:

    1. the other teams who lost in the CL first round, or
    2. the teams who lose both their 2nd round CL games and the subsequent 3rd round of the EL.

That means that it's unlikely to include the 4 teams mentioned above nor the best of the rest since they would have to lose 2 games in a row to inferior competition to end up in the UECL playoff round.

We'll find out who the possible 3rd round opponents will be in tomorrow's draw.

Yea, it's actually looking reasonably favourable that Rovers could make the group stages. They will get the winner of one of the below ties in the third round qualifier. The Israeli/Norwegian teams would be the nightmare scenario. You'd think it would be well within Rovers ability to beat the rest though.

    Teuta/Inter Club d'Escaldes

    Riga/Shkëndija

    Dinamo Tbilisi/Maccabi Haifa

    HB Tórshavn/Budućnost Podgorica

    Linfield/Borac Banja Luka

    Shakhtyor Soligorsk/Fola Esch

    Folgore/Hibernians

    Prishtina/Connah's Quay Nomads

    Valur/Bodø Glimt

They've already got €1.15m in the bank by just competing in the third round. If they go though to the play off, that will go up to €1.95m. Potential opponents in that round will be the losers of the Champions League second round qualifier, who will then play each other to compete in the Europa League third round qualifiers. The losers of that will then be parachuted into the Europa Conference League play off, to play against the winner of the ties above ^^.

    Dinamo Zagreb/Omonia

    Slovan Bratislava/Young Boys

    Legia Warsaw/Flora

    Alashkert/Sheriff Tiraspol

    Olympiacos/Neftçi Baku

    Kairat/Red Star Belgrade

    Lincoln Red Imps/CFR Cluj

    Malmö/HJK

    Ferencváros/Žalgiris

    Mura/Ludogorets Razgrad

Should Rovers make the play off, they'll be looking probably at the following potential opponents Lincoln Red Imps/Flora/Alashkert/Sheriff Tiraspol/Kairat. If they can win that sort of tie and qualify for the group stage, €3m gets added to the €1.95m they've already made in prize money. This is more than what Dundalk got for making the Europa League group stage last year. The incentive is absolutely massive and the opportunity is surely within reach barring a bad draw.

Dundalk will potentially play Vitesse (Netherlands), NK Domzale (Slovenia)/Fc Honka (Finland) or Universitae Craiova (Romania)/ KF Laci (Albania). Not really great draws

    Bohemians potential opponents.

Viktoria Plzeň (CZE) / Dynamo Brest (BLR)

Austria Wien (AUT) / Breidablik (ISL)

    PAOK (GRE)

    Molde (NOR) / Servette (SUI)

    Nasty.

That's the difference in being seeded and unseeded. Way tougher potential opponents for Bohs. Obviously Dundalk want to avoid Vitesse

Do UEFA explain anywhere what the criteria are for those Groups that they make for the various draws? In many ways they look like geographical groupings (Irish teams often are draw with teams from Wales/Northern Ireland & Scandanavia and rarely from the likes of Andorra/San Marino or Georgia) but sometimes they do not and seem to have teams from all corners of the continent in them. Group 6 of the UECL main path draw looks very regional for example (south-eastern Europe) whereas Group 2 is not at all (teams from all over the continent)

After the EL draw it looks like Rovers potential playoff opponents (should they win their own 3rd round match) would most likely be one of:

    • Flora Tallin
    • Zalgiris Vilnius
    • Lincoln red Imps
    • Neftchi
    • Kairat Almaty/Alashkert/Sheriff Tiraspol

Great draw for Rovers. Teuta of Albania or the Andorran champions

    Dundalk drawn against Vitesse

Rovers should make the playoff with that draw.

Bohs will play PAOK if they beat Dudelange

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,486 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

I think Dundalk and Bohs got the worst possible opponents from those that they could have gotten.

Edit: Plzen would have probably been worse for Bohs

My basic understanding is that they work on the principles of north, central and south.

That's slightly different to how most people would split Europe, as we'd default to east, central and west.

Doing it the former way helps to spread the more lucrative western european opponents throughout the draw (and also helps stop them knocking each other out if you want to be cynical).

I'd guess it's a continually moving line though, you could be central one year, south the next etc. There's probably also a situation that are teams 'left over' because the geographical numbers aren't perfect, and they end up playing a long distance opponent.
