We were going better than I expected.

    But that's it now.

The missed penalty and then the kick. The frustration evident.

Mcbrearty get the friggin finger out. Match running away from us.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,097 ✭✭✭babybuilder

Take Murphy out of this team and it's very average. This was coming all year. End of Bonners reign. Maybe we'll see the team learning to kick the ball forward and to tackle. Tyrone aren't great and should have beaten us out the gate. They have better panel. Anyone describing Donegal as physical are deluded.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,921 ✭✭✭John Doe1

Losing Murphy and McGee was too much of an ask. Lots of players didnt show up, McMenamin and McFadden-Ferry are not up to standard really.

    Bonner has to go unfortunately.

Dublin/Kerry/Mayo/Mongahan/Armagh would have beaten us by 10/15 points.

Monagahan V Kerry will be a tight Semi:p

Disappointing but not entirely surprising. Tyrone better squad but I don't think they will be winning an All Ireland. Looking to the future I'm not sure who the candidates to replace Bonner would be.

Tyrone deserving winners today. Always a good battle. A below par performance, one of many in recent times which is frustrating when aware of the abundance of quality footballers in the county. I hope we have new management for next year, and that Eoin McHugh has enough awareness to never represent Donegal at this level again. Many poor performances. The whole team was poor. Thought Langan, McFadden-Ferry and Eoghan Ban did alright. Hughie McFadden was good but he needs to get fit enough to last a whole match. Great to have football back, looking forward to next year!

The extra man in that heat killed us. Penalty goes in and Michael still on it could easily have been us rather than them. We should have also had another penalty but McQuillan chickened out. Time to go looking for a few backs. Cannot see McGee giving it another go. Ban Gallagher had his best game in some time in taking the game too them but he needs to be moved to our half back line.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,217 ✭✭✭overshoot

Agreed the penalty miss changed the game, could have gone 5 up to soon losing/man down. Although I do think the one on langan was a free/not a penalty.

Ban Gallagher and Paul Brennan's direct running went a long way to keeping us ticking over.

Agree with baby builder above, was it Spillane said we were physical at half time? It's definitely a shortcoming although we did improve this year.

Defence has always been a weakness under Bonner and it's the basis to win trophies. Can't say I've the faith in him to get us back into the all Ireland fight, we have fallen short each year when the intensity really came on, although not although sure it's his fault/the players are there defensively either. Does feel the game was won on the line today though.

Dunno if McGee has another year in him, if that is his last involvement certainly sad that it will have ended up limping off early. Fantastic servant

No defence. That’s been the story for the last few years. And playing a forward, Ryan, in the backs leaves us exposed all the time down his side. He coughed up 4 points in the first half between been ran past and losing his man. But he’s awesome going forward.

Hard to see how Bonner stays. Had t taken us forward in the past two years. Does he deserve another year? Maybe. But does the coach deserve another whatever 000? Doubt it.

Personally, I’d be picking up the phone and ringing Jim.

    Probably Neil’s last game too.

Jim would be the dream but with his other commitments I doubt he would take it on. But they should ask the question.

Out in the car today listening to the match updates, we hear 'Neil McGee has been taken off with a hip injury'.

Like a flash my missus goes 'well, at least Neil McHip wasn't taken off with a gee injury'.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,097 ✭✭✭babybuilder

Looking back over the last three years I think we are in reverse. Teams brandishing a more physical style will come up trumps against us. Also our Bonner style of football is too inefficient expending huge amounts of energy as was seen today. Bar one or two individuals we are weak in the tackle and don't hit hard enough. I'm going against the perceived belief here but upfront McBrearty and Brennan cannot be relied upon when the going gets tough. I think Mc Brearty is easily marked and is predictable on the ball.

Separately how are we performing at minor and u20 level compared to our nearest rivals? Congrats to Derry on today's title.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,093 ✭✭✭✭charlie14

That was where I thought McQuillan chickened out. It was clearly a foul and no way he didn`t see it, but having given a black card and a penalty for the same, he really could not just a free without questions a to what was different, so he just ignored it.

I don`t know if the defensive players are there or not, but at least we could coach what we have on the tackle. Michael included, as practically all his yellow cards have been due to clumsy tackles. A bit of conditioning would do no harm either for quite a few of that squad. Ryan is a fine footballer, but he is a liability at wing back. Even Derry were targeting his wing when attacking and Tyrone did the same today. I have been a critic of Paul Brennan in the past, but he did keep us in it along with Ban Gallagher. Still do not rate him at centre back though.

Hopefully Neil McGee will give it another year. A real warrior and a great servant that owes nothing to anybody

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,914 ✭✭✭doc_17

Ryan can only be relied upon when going forward. As said above, Derry ran past him at will and so did Tyrone. Paddy Durcan was man of the match in super 8 in 2019 despite being given the marking job on Ryan when Ryan was named half forward. Give Ryan a role with no defensive responsibilities. Like NOD seems to have.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,037 ✭✭✭timmyntc

McBrearty not at the races at all - coughs up a lot of possession when he does get on the ball.

Hasnt been a good year for him

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,863 ✭✭✭Ceist_Beag

Agree with everything said about the match. After the Derry game the writing was on the wall really so it wasn't a surprise that we went out. Once Murphy went, in those conditions, in fairness we did well to keep in it as long as we did. The one things these lads have is great attitude and character and credit to the management team for instilling that. That said, I think Declans time is up as I don't think he has made progress with the group over the past two years.

I can't see Neil coming back for another year but that's a decision he might not make just yet. Best fullback we ever had so don't be in any rush to make up your mind Neil.

In terms of the future, Langan has grown into a leader in the past few games, he has been hugely impressive. EBG was back to his best in terms of running with the ball yesterday. As someone else said, he needs to be on the half back line. Eoin McHugh simply is not good enough and we should let someone else have a go. Paul Brennan showed yesterday and against Derry that he has something to offer - just not at 6. He is a strong runner and does add a bit of punch to an otherwise lightweight defence. I've been a bit disappointed with McMenemin this year but maybe he's not fully right.

Whoever takes over from Declan, the focus needs to be on getting a back 6 that can defend. We need a replacement for Neil. We need another corner back (with McMenemin on one corner). We need a 6 (possibly OFF can grow into this position but he's a bit raw and tbh I would have him as more of a man marker) with EBG on this line as well as one other wing back (not Ryan, he needs to get back to his best position of wing half forward). We have decent options from here up and a lot of these lads are young so the real problem is the back 6.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,319 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

It was a good 2nd half performance in the circumstances. But it felt like we were being kept at arm's length. Langan missing the free and Paddy dropping another short were killer blows. Anyway, the game was lost in the 1st half really, when the penalty was missed and then Michael saw red. They had managed to stay in touch with a deep bench to call on. I was thinking McKenna might have slipped back a bit but he made a huge difference when he came on and it's ominous for the years ahead.

I'm certainly in the camp that we have regressed since 2019 and a fresh face might be needed. Declan Bonner has been a great Donegal man as a player, a senior manager, underage manager and senior manager again when we desperately needed someone to turn around what we had become under Jim McGuinness' successor. So I'll be slow to get behind any 'Bonner Out' calls. COVID and the fact that we managed to stay in Division 1 while putting up a decent performance yesterday might earn him another year. But honestly, it feels like we need to start the overhaul now.

It's up to himself, but I think Neil McGee should call it a day.

Well said. We may be out for this year, but I don`t believe there should be any questions as to the character and attitude of any of this squad. Not after Monaghan, Armagh, Derry and especially yesterday. Eoin McHugh is just not good enough at this level, and that is no t a criticism of the lad. It`s just how it is. The positives for the year. Mid field can hold their own with anyone. Langan has come on in leaps and bounds, as has Mc Gonagle. Ban Gallagher yesterday was back to his best for the first time this year. Hugh Mc Fadden is always willing and playing as sweeper he has shored up that hole in the middle of defence to the extent that our main problems are not down the middle but from attacks down the wings wings. Patton is one of the top three keepers in the country and we have forwards to sell.

To state the obvious, the back six are our problem. Hopefully Neil will give it another go, but if he decides not too then management should do all in their power to keep the best full back we have ever had in a coaching capacity. Even if he does give it another year, we still need to find a full back going forward We really need to find a number 6 and if we are going to persist with attacking wing backs then we also need wing backs that have the physique to defend. He is no centre back, and I have been critical of him in the past, but on recent showings Paul Brennan deserves a shot their, and with Ban Gallagher yesterday back to what he can cause, to me is a no brainer for the other wing. That would mean we need to find a home for Ryan McHugh in the front 6. I would be tempted to move Ciaran Thompson to centre back. It would give us even more high ball winning ability in the middle and perhaps requiring less donkey work from Michael allowing him to stay closer to goal where he is most dangerous and give us the added option of that long ball in which would leave a lot of opposition defenders a lot less eager to cause us the problems they have been doing.

As too the two corner back, Mc Menamin scares the live out of me with every tackle (and some of his antics) waiting on a straight red to be flashed .For me his black card against Derry was an indicator that he is a lad that refs are becoming aware of and that he will be getting very little when it comes to the element of doubt. Personally I do believe he can become a very good corner back, but he really need to control the aggression somewhat and work on his tackling. For the other corner Mc Ferry-Fadden perhaps, but along with again needing to work on his tackling, is more of a man marker, something he showed to be very adapt at in 2019, especially against Cavan in the Ulster Final. Whether that is enough for a specialist position such as corner back I have no idea. There are a few others in the squad Mc Coll for one that perhaps would be better at filling some of those 2- 7 positions.

One of those days where anything that could go wrong for us did.

Once Murphy walked there was no way we could have gotten anything out of that game and especially not in that heat.

Away from the obvious sending off, the critical moments both happened during the Tyrone Black Cards. The penalty miss - christ. That would have put us 5 up and a man up coming into half time and in a very strong position. The way Tyrone had been playing I don't think they'd have been able to catch us at that stage (even with their bench) as we could manage the game better and have more energy. As it ended up I think they ended up drawing level and then the sending off happened.

We did really well to stay in the game as long as we did but the Langan missed free sealed the deal. They'd just gone down to 14 and that was an easy chance (for him) which would have made it a 1 point game and could have swung the momentum. Our race was run at that stage and Tyrone had more legs than us but it would have made it nervy for them.

Would have no question marks over the lads character / bottle. To make a game of it for as long as they did in those conditions was really brave of them. We all remember Donegal teams in the past that would have just collapsed but these lads do have a bit of fight in them - not in the gritty sense but they will keep trying to play ball.

    Some quick fire thoughts:

-Eoghan Ban is wasted man marking. He's not particularly good at it and the difference he made when he pushed further up yesterday was huge. He needs to be played at wing back.

-Paddy McBrearty is not as fit he needs to be.

-We cannot go toe to toe with any half decent forward line with the defenders we have. Some of the Tyrone scores were absolutely pathetic from a defensive point of view. Strolling into our defensive zone with zero pressure and getting shots away easily. Two issues with this 1- man markers not up to it. 2- defensive structure not up to it. At one stage Mattie Donnelly was heading at out goal with Niall O'Donnell for company. This can't happen.

-Langan, O'Donnell, Mogan, McGonagle are all firmly established now and really important players. They've had a good year.

-I appreciate that there will be groundswell for Bonner to go but would be a bit concerned about the potential candidates to step into the void. SP!? Duffy!? McGuinness is a non-starter.

Trying to be positive, we've had a very disruptive 2 years and we still do have a good core group of players. It doesn't feel anywhere near like it did in 2017 and the final days of Rory Gallagher. The extended break (and hopefully a 'normal' lead in to a regular 2022) should stand to us. Derry Armagh and Monaghan have all progressed this year and look to have serious hunger. Tyrone and ourselves have fallen back into the pack a bit. If we come back with a full deck and address some of the glaring issues defensively next season we can still compete with those other 4 teams.

Now if we can just get last year's club championship final played off that would be great. Be nice for someone to have the trophy for a week before handing it back.

I think we did as well as we could have done. Tyrone are in better shape than they have been in a few years. New management is paying off. The hammering Tyrone got down in Kerry last month may have bucked them up a bit. I hope that the ulster final is as exciting as it potentially could be. Please get a good ref for this game as we seem to be going backwards in this regards. Best of luck to our lads, hopefully they enjoy a long and well deserved break from the training and make the most of the remainder of the summer. As for Declan Bonner, I would like to see him stay.

Great win for the minors tonight. An impressive performance. Turned over a lot of ball. A lot of big, but agile and pacey players. Great going forward and not afraid to zero in on goal. They’ll give any of the quarter finalists a good game Friday week.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,319 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

Should have saved a few scores for Monaghan.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,621 ✭✭✭Nidgeweasel

We're down to play Monaghan in Clones next Wednesday.

Brian McEniff in his column signalling the need for an injection of new blood into the senior squad and 'that we have players that are not cutting the mustard'. Plain as day for anyone to see if you look at it from a perspective of what is best for the seniors to progress.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,914 ✭✭✭doc_17

Finally watched the game again from last Sunday. As said above, everything that could have went wrong for us went wrong.

But why no Oisin Gallen when we were chasing the game? Bringing McLean on at that time didn’t make sense.

We need to get Aaron Doherty into the panel if he’s interested. A better player, in my opinion, than Niall O’Donnell. Niall did ok this year but I think Doherty is better.

Congrats to Naomh Conaill, absolutely steamrolled the division. But perhaps that isn’t a good sign for the quality of club football in the county at the minute.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,319 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

Don't think forward players are the issue myself.

We can't stop whoever we are playing scoring.

Rumours that the county leagues could be in jeopardy due to COVID. Half the games didn’t proceed at the weekend.
