Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

earmarked by who? you talk as if they will be forced to move.

Have you been living in a cave?

They are the only demographic being chattered about and earmarked for "right sizing" to use another bland office-speak inspired phrase.

Forcing people to vacate from their own private property is the logical end point of the 'right to housing' movement

I'd heard talk about it alright, and the empty room tax that was floated, just didn't think it had grown legs as such.

It's hard to keep up with all the governmental kite flying

Why are only pensioners with big houses are forced to downsize and not tiny families/couples in houses far too big for them?

I don't think it has. At the moment, the talk is about incentives for older people to downsize, not forcing people out of their houses, and also not taxing empty rooms. Yet.

I'm sure younger small families and couples are not being included because there is a chance that there might be additions (so long as the female doesn't drink alcohol until she's 50. :pac:).

Umm other than being borderline insulting to older people where are they supposed to downsize to?...

Tds earn more than doctors plus they get large pensions. Working in a bank is better than retail . People need to pay a mortgage. Most jobs are boring. Most people are not actors, pop stars or Comedians.
Why do people get a degree. In order to get a high salary.
I don't think the average person loves their job.
The average office job is not that interesting.

I have vague recollections of a report on a certain denomination uk bank note, and the proportion of them that contain traces of cocaine, and another on US (I think) notes that had some sort of hepatitis contamination (possibly from being stuck up people's noses). Both were years ago, hence the vagueness and possibility of being wrong. I'm too lazy to Google either of them.

Why people who can potentially earn more elsewhere, become politicians.

For example, Leo. He could earn significantly more as a doctor working 5 x 1/2 days, yet he spends his time listening to b1thching and moaning and his constituents wanting him to sort out his free travel pass.

While spending his weekends going to media commitments, commemorations and various other functions.

I get why half of the Dáil do it - because they can't earn any more anywhere else and probably get an orgasm sorting out somebody's medical card, or generally love the power and influence they have which they wouldn't have otherwise in their rural existence working in the local mart or something.

But why solicitors, barristers, doctors, etc do it, when all can earn significantly more elsewhere - I don't get it.

Id imagine his goal is to be taoiseach for a good bit of the next 20 years. He could potentially be one of the longest serving in the position ever. Maybe president after that. Surely there is going to be serious perks in that position over being a doctor?
Plus there is the fame/power and ego element of it, which Im fairly certain motivates him a good bit.

The Dutch have a right to housing provided for in their constitution. I'm not subscribed to the Rotterdam Chronicle or anything, but I'm fairly sure we haven't missed a pensioner Kristallnacht in Holland that's been overlooked by the BBC / RTE. Nor has the Netherlands been transformed into some sort of Maoist dystopia - runs pretty well for the most part you'd think right?

Middle class people complaining that they have no money and so are voting for Sinn Fein and other socialists who promise that "someone else" will be made to pay for everything.

If you're earning more than 40k YOU are the someone else they have in their sights. It's like turkeys voting for Christmas.

i presume people go to nighclubs to meet other people, hook up,
maybe the pubs are closed, who go,s to nightclubs to listen to music?
the west cork murder is an unsolved mystery ,an innocent woman in a small village. It makes a great story for tv documentarys .
loads of info, no clear result as to who did it.
Every week on tv or netflix there seems to be a new documentary about a serial killer.
As long as you pay your rent you can stay in a 3bed council house ,
no one will tell you to move to a 1 bed apartment.
one person living in a 3bed house does not make sense with such a large housing list
liberals view sinn fein as a socialist party eg they are no longer associated with ira bombings or extreme violence.

Designed by a committee. The old website was no racehorse, but people were used to it. I think the new boards lacks traffic as people get fed up trying to navigate around it. Perhaps younger folks find it more intuitive, but I seem to spend my time digging around to find the stuff I like, and when I do, nobody has posted in days.

I actually believe that there is a good chance aliens exist but that’s neither here nor there. One of my mates went crazy last night when i pointed out that his evidence about the guaranteed existence of aliens is pentagon videos when he previously said that the pentagon were the biggest liars in the world. The vein on his neck nearly exploded when I mentioned how lucky it was that every bit of ufo video footage was captured on an archaic mobile phone of a soldier with a beef!

A variation on 'missing white woman' syndrome imo. Utterly tired of what has turned into a media circus and endless speculation from amateur Jessica Fletchers.

Davy Fitz and the love-in he gets. I just dont get it. Hes as false as fake tan and he was starved of publicity last year when his Fittest Family show was canned due to Covid. So what does he do? Hone in on the mental health bandwagon and uses a group of disadvantaged lads to his betterment and makes a show about pretending to care about their growth and maturity. All the while checking the ratings.

When he shed a few crocodile tears on that show as the poor lads share their life story i nearly got sick, nauseatingly insincere.

Sell it and let it sink or swim

people who love McDonalds, Burger King etc.. I mean, if your gonna eat fast food - why not go to a good chipper where they make real food, chips, proper beef burgers etc...? I really don't get it..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,834 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

I agree, but....Faster food in McDonald’s...from ordering to eating can be about 1 to 3 minutes... chipper, ordering a quarter pounder and cheese and chips about an 8-10 minute or so wait, longer ? Plus you need get out of the car.

id habitually get chipper on a Friday on way back from work though unless it pours down where the option drive through is preferable... I’m really gone off McDonalds chips though, put beside decent chipper chips absolutely zero comparison.

They will still likely have more money in a Sinn Fein government. Lots of Sinn Fein hate yet they are the most dominant party in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,480 ✭✭✭pgj2015

I agree. also he is a really bad role model for the lads he was on that show with. He is forever crying about what other people say about him, people in Clare said so and so about me and my dad. so what, not everyone is going to love you in life, you are a man of 49, why would you care? worrying about what others think of you is what causes mental health problems, stress, depression, anxiety. He should be teaching them lads to not give a $hit about what arseholes say about them.

ok - I hear ya - thats ok if your tastebuds are not fussy and if your really under pressure.. but gee.. Mc'D'S chips wer always bad so dread to think what they are like now if they are worse.. in any event, i'd wait another 5-10 mins for better food, rain or not..

there are some fab fast chipper food options too now with food trucks - there is one near where i live and its gourmet.. like, proper home cut chips made with beef dripping and the burgers are made with real beef etc.. home made aioli and other sauces.. I am quiet fussy about my food and wt but I get food from there from time to time.. don't mind the fat as long as the ingredients are good

White women going missing all the time, particularly in white countries.

which reminds me of what I don’t get. The use of “white” in Ireland as if we had the same history as the US.

thats one of the reasons I like the Qashqai, Tucson style SUV.... that elevated position when you are driving.... it’s weird and not good weird taking the wheel of a standard low down saloon after having had the benefit of a really advantageous view to going back down ..

It's a US term, and I said 'variation of' but still valid as a way of saying middle or upper middle class but you knew that of course.

Pretty and from a reasonably wealthy family with the means to mount legal battles, if she was lower class she would have been forgotten long ago.

On the morning that's in it, I am well used to (but still don't get) the contempt shown for League of Ireland clubs by supposed sports fans. Brilliant stuff from Bohs last night.. and it's not easy to say that as someone with Hoopsian inclinations, believe me :)
