Hey, so I made a pc just over 5 years ago, I'm thinking about possibly upgrading now, but I am not sure weather to just upgrade a few key parts or to start a new build completely. I am also not sure if upgrading in the current market is even worth it.

My younger brother (15yo) would love a pc so I am leaning towards getting a new build and letting him have my old one. My current pc is fully working.

    Current Build key components :

    • Nvidea GTX 960
    • Intel core i5-4660 3.2GHz
    • ASRock H81M-DGS motherboard (DDR3)
    • 550 watt Powersuply
    • 1x 8GB DDR3 Ram

    Others :

    • Full size Case
    • DVD Drive (what a wast of money)
    • 250GB SSD
    • 1TB HDD
    • Mouse/Keyboard
    • Rather Cheap (but fine), 1080p Moniter

If I were to upgrade I'd imagine I would be changing all of the key components so that why I am leaning towards starting a full new build and letting my brother have the older pc, it still works perfectly fine.

My budget for a full new build would be flexible but I'd imagine for it to be around €1500-2000, including two decent monitors.

Given the current Graphics card market, would it be worth building a new rig, but use my 960 untill I get a cheaper graphics card? The old pc would still be usable with the i5's integrated graphics.

Any thoughts are much appreciated, I'm not looking for exact builds at the moment, more just advice.

most of your core components are 7 years old so it would normally be around now that you should be looking to replace your system but as you know now is not the time

I would look into buying prebuilts from the likes of scan, awd-it, pcspecialist or cclonline

there are some deals popping up on monitors at the moment

    Hey OP

I did something like that recently. I kept the case, but over time I had to basically change everything bar the monitors, mouse, keyboard (kept DVD drive, never know)

But ended up with new GPU, new motherboard, cpu and ram for it.

Oh yeah, new PSU for GPU.

So it does add up. I found one thing led to another needing an upgrade.

bear in mind that it's worth checking if your current build will support windows 11. it probably won't, and that may be a factor in what you choose to do.

    No. Not worth upgrading

Yeah I didn't look into the windows 11 announcement until after this post, it definitely won't run on my current system without some tinkering.

I'm pretty set on making a new build, keeping an eye on GPU prices which are heading the right direction so I will hold off untill they get to a more attractive level
