Maybe, though Walcott and Adams are firm starters ahead of the two lads, and I'd guess they'll bring in a replacement goalscorer too. Still hoping Obafemi gets a loan move to the champ. Needs to get a season playing week in week out. I'd say there'll be no shortage of interest in him though. Wonder if Swansea will come back in for him after wanting him last January.

Ya there's no chance Obafemi or Long are starting ahead of Adams and you'd have to think they'll add another forward.

Were they not trying to flog Obafemi to Blackburn only a couple of days ago?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,023 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

It was reported they might try to use him as a makeweight in a deal to get Armstrong from Blackburn, since both players are going into the last year of their deals. Was then later reported that there's been no contact though, so might have just been a journo looking at the two players situations and throwing out a story.

Could see Oba being sold alright though, but could equally see him signing a new contract and going on loan. Apparently Hasenhuttl has been impressed with him since he came back from his injury.

Ings is a massive player to lose. Southampton may end up in a relegation scrap without his strike rate.

I have gone and jinxed it. A reasonably reliable source is suggesting that Norwich have offered Idah to Blackburn.

Back in the rumour mill today

No mention of Obafemi going in other direction but it shows that Southampton do not see Obafemi or Long as feasible starters this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,989 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

I'll believe it when I see it. Because I can't see Norwich offering Idah as part of a deal to make up 5m. They made a profit last year even with Covid and are shrewd in the transfer market at making a good profit. Unless Farke has had a big 180 in how they rate Idah I can't see how this transfer happens.

Same reporter said Southampton want 6m for Obafemi with a year left on his deal but Norwich are willing to let Idah go for 5m after signing him to a long term contract before Christmas.

I can see smallbone getting a good run at saints when he returns

Would be an interesting move if it happened with Parrott there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,989 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

West Ham have a small squad so more than likely they're keeping him around just in case of injuries. Probably another year of sitting on the bench with the a few minutes in the cup. Disappointing when there was interest to take him on loan.

O Shea scores! Header from a corner, bad defending from Bournemouth.

    How is Kilkenny playing?

    Robinson scores

Good start to the season for the Irish lads anyway.

Robinson would have been my pick of the bunch. Had the ball in the back of the net twice, first attempt disallowed despite there being absolutely nothing wrong with it. Second finish was a lovely one touch effort after some great West Brom play. He was lively throughout and linked up well with the rest of the West Brom attack.

O'Shea got on the scoresheet himself with a great header and did well in defence, despite not having a lot to do. With the way West Brom play so direct, I can see him getting more goals this season. He seems to have bulked up a little bit over the Summer too, he'll be a nightmare to defend set pieces against.

Travers started a bit nervous looking, but did come into the match and denied Robinson a fine effort that was going in. He didn't make any mistakes that led to a goal, but he was a bit at sea for the disallowed goal that Robinson tapped in from the corner. Promising game, but still has a bit to prove I'd say.

Kilkenny had a real baptism of fire. He looks really good on the ball, had some lovely touches, spread out play nicely at times. Unfortunately he was overrun quite a bit through the game as the sole deep-lying player, which doesn't look like a completely natural position for him. With that said, this is his Championship debut and West Brom will be one of the most horrible teams to play against.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,989 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Good that Kilkenny played well, the more he impresses the better once the more experienced midfielders return from injury. Parker could be the making of Kilkenny moving back to be a deep lying playmaker.

Robinson should've had two goals tonight with that first being ruled out and looked a good goal. Similar to Kilkenny this change in manager could be good for Robinson. He favours 3-4-3 which will suit him and us if we continue with three at the back.

    O'Dowda off injured.

Daryl Horgan with two assists for Wycombe.

Any reason why Bazunu was on the bench? Waste of a loan if that continues

Apparently he picked up a minor injury which kept him out today (although I think he was on the bench), Dan McDonnell said he is expected to start for them in their next game.

More Obafemi and Blackburn talk. Tony Mowbry himself commenting about it but not saying much. If he does move to Blackburn it won't be part of the Armstrong deal whose signing for Southampton either way for 15m.

U19s are also taking part in a training camp today in Dublin. Includes both UK based and home based lads. Zak Gilsenan back in camp with the 19s, and Joel Bagans younger brother Sam is also training with the 19s.

Republic of Ireland Under-19 training camp squad

Might be a good thing for Obafemi tbh. If he can get a bit of game time anywhere it would be an improvement on where he is.

Odubeko being talked up in this article

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,793 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

Mowbray has publicly expressed his interest in Obafemi. It would be great to get him there (and Curtis too for that matter).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Is Odubeko still interested in playing for Ireland? Thought I read he rejected a call-up to one of the youth squads.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 22,408 CMod ✭✭✭✭Pawwed Rig

He strikes me as someone who is a bit immature and petulant. Might be one of those players who needs cuddles and be told how great he is all the time similar to Jack Grealish. Hopefully he pushes on with his career and matures a bit at the same time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,793 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

No one talks about him much, but surely Callum O'Hare is worthy of being in the mix of a call-up? Had a good season with Coventry last year in the attacking midfield position and has got off to a flier in his first game.

    CALLUM O’HARE: 8

Lively from the off with relentless running and pressing while looking dangerous on the run and with the ball at his feet. Linked up nicely with Maatsen and put in a great shift tracking back to help defend. Set up the all important equaliser.

Here's the goal he set up.

Conor Noss on the bench for Gladbach in their cup game tonight. Half time and they lead 1-0.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,989 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Pretty sure Kenny mentioned O'Hare and some other players were often talking about aren't actually eligible.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,760 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Fetsy Ebosele (MOTM) and Louie Watson had very good games for Derby tonight. They drew 3-3 with Salford and won on pens.

Ebsole a bit raw at times but a nightmare for fullbacks when he gets them one-on-one. He won a (soft) penalty to get Derby back to 2-2.

Watson with some nice incisive passes and scored the winning penalty in the shootout.

A good season for Festy and he could find himself in with the next summer.

Will Ferry got an assisted in Crawley Towns win over Gillingham on penalties. Scored in the shoot out too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,793 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

Connell, O'Connor, Lawal, and Vata (bench) all featuring for Celtic B. Interesting that Lawal is already captain for Celtic B after only just moving to Celtic. Not hard to see why he's getting rave reviews from this footage of his most recent game. He looks an absolute unit compared to the other players on the pitch, really dominant on the ball, but also really mobile and can pick out a pass. It will be interesting to see what happens with him, still only 18 but he already looks far too good for this level.

O'Connor scores for Celtic B to lead 1-0 btw.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,989 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Jesus if both O'Connor and Connell are playing lowland league for the season it's gonna be depressing.

Irish born Dennis Cirkin has joined Sunderland from Spurs. José often had him with the first team and rated him highly. Probably a slim chance he'll ever play for Ireland, but if the lad is playing first team football this season it's worth Kenny and FAI to approach the lad to have a chat at least.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,760 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

The young lads need to stop joining Celtic unless they are guaranteed first team involvement.

Connell has wasted an important of his career since joining Celtic. If he'd stayed at Bolton he'd have a full season of League Two first team football, and promotion, under his belt now. Instead all he has to show for his time at Celtic is a handful of games in the Scottish fourth tier last season. Now find himself playing lowlands league.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,989 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

The young lads need better advisors is what it is. You'd have to assume that first team football and the chance to play in Europe was dangled in front of them, well more so Connell as he was actually playing first team football.

Does he fancy a game next month as Enda Stevens is confirmed out by the Sheffield United for possible 4-6 weeks and could need some surgery.

McClean is surplus to requirements at Stoke and Manning only came on as a sub in the league cup so safe to assume he's back as second choice for the time being.

Hopefully Bagan is serious about wanting to switch to us as chances are he'll be Cardiff's first choice LWB if Joe Bennett doesn't re-sign.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 22,408 CMod ✭✭✭✭Pawwed Rig

In my experience young lads that age know everything there is to know and there is no telling them otherwise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,989 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

I don't know if we'll change between a back four or three between games. Not unless we have to because of players being unavailable.

Having used three at the back against Andorra you'd have to assume it will be a back three again, possibly even until we reach the next nation's league games.

If Coleman is fit for these games it's a good shot that Doherty could switch over to the left side. Coleman is the better player for us and should start RWB if fit.

Any realistic chance we could see Liam Scales brought in to the senior team. He's worked with Kenny before at U21s and covers two positions. Yes he doesn't play at a great level, but neither did Bazunu when he got thrown into the starting XI.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,712 ✭✭✭dr.kenneth noisewater

Maybe they're not as good as they and others think they are? Seen O'Connor for Utd underage a few times and was never overly impressed. He's always done well for Ireland underage in fairness when I saw him but thats a lower standard

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,760 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Possibly that is the case. However they must likely would've gotten better loan moves had they gone elsewhere and/or wouldn't be playing in the backarse of Scottish football.

    This.

Whatever about should they or shouldn't they be getting first team minutes at Celtic, but we can all agree their development at Celtic could have been handled better, and that they'd be further along, more so Connell, in their development had they not signed for Celtic.

O'Connor had a good season last year, and probably showed that his future could be as a holding midfielder, but as Sugarman said there was the possiblity that he'd have gotten some involvement with the United senior squad the season he left. Also a good chance he'd have gotten a loan spell at a lower league club.

Hopefully Lawal and Vata have a better time with the B team now involved in a league, but both lads already look a step above and Vata only turned 15 back in April. Either he's that good, and that's good for us if we're his first choice or the lowland league is just dirt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,597 ✭✭✭Ferris_Bueller

That's a good loan move for him you would think. If he does well there then it will be sooner rather than later that we see him involved with the senior squad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,989 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Excellent loan move for him. It's a level that if he's starting week in/out then he'd be putting his hand up for inclusion with the seniors.

Interesting to see how he gets on at senior level, and what type of midfielder he'll develop into playing regularly. Joined Bayren as a 10, but they often had him playing deeper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,989 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Irish eligible Pym starting in goals for Peterborough, not sure if he's actually declared. Sammie Szmodics wife had a baby so he misses today and Jack Taylor is still not fit.

Edit: one article back in March would suggest very much that Pym has already declared for us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,989 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

From the sounds of it Festy has been one of Derby's better players today. Did he get man of the match in their last game?

Shane Duffy starting for Brighton. Hopefully the lad starts the season strong. No Connolly on the bench, not sure if injured and obviously no Molumby either. Nathan Collins is on the bench for Burnley.

Not shocked if it's true, but the only story that's ever made the news or had someone reliable talking about it was his sex tape back in March. Pretty sure everything else has been from Twitter accounts like that or people who said this happened on a night out but no more gets said. Hopefully we don't have another Anthony Stokes on our hands.

No Michael Obafemi in Southampton's squad. Being linked with Fulham and Bournemouth as well as Blackburn now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 696 ✭✭✭Stewball

Just caught the end of the game, so I can't judge Pym on his performance but he looks really small for a 'keeper.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,760 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

    Good to hear.

Fot Mob rating for him was only 5.7 (not sure what they base it on) and he was subbed in the 58th so was thinking it must've been a poor performance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,989 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Yeah he's short for a keeper but watching some games last season and he likes to play the ball out from the back and seems comfortable using both feet. Think he has some qualities that suit how Kenny wants our keepers to play. It's only a matter of if he's good enough or not.

Always good to have options after being down to just Travers and Bazunu back in March.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,989 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Robinson hitting form at the right time. Could be a good season for him. Said it last week that the change in management could be a good thing for Robinson. How this manager sets up suits him a lot more.
