Nicest cheese slices for melting over ?

    Hi guys, in your opinion what is the best tasting cheese for say a George Foreman or just melting over stuff in general ? Going back in the day, I think it was Aldi or possibly Lidl had easy slices in a blue wrapper and it was unreal melted on toast or in sandwiches, but it went off the shelf and the new cheese they brought in just didn't taste the same. Right now I'm just using the Dunnes brand mature cheddar and while it's OK, it's just not like the old stuff from Aldi.

    I always preferred using the easy slices in the individual wrappers for sandwiches. Any suggestion on particular cheese I could try ? I've tried the Easy singles and Lidl and Aldi brand.. any others ?

    American/Process Cheese is designed specifically to do this, being snobby about it isn't particularly useful as alternatives from "proper cheese" do not do what is desired.

    Lidl sells slices of processed european cheeeses - emmenthal or gouda etc - in semi rigid plastic wrapping that works well.

    Do Lidl in Ireland do Tilister as its called here or could be called Tilset there, by far the best cheese i have found for cheese toasties, comes in similar packet to what L1011 describes

    I particularly like their Maasdam for melting over a burger patty, or for putting in a grilled cheese sandwich (pan fried, American style :D )

    It melts nicely, and pulls these wonderful strings. And the taste is just spot-on, not too mild, not too strong.

    The standard Aldi white cheddar slices melt well enough. I throw a shot of water on the pan and cover for 20 seconds ish and it's melted.


    On processed cheese. I made a double smash burger with a slice on each patty recently, threw on a few onions that had got the lick of the pan as well and between a toasted brioche bun it has a flavor that's hard to beat.

    First they came for the socialists...

    We call it plastic cheese and it does exactly what you want it to, melt on top of your burger and look all gooey and lovely. I've tried using proper chedder and it just melts into nothing. 😣

    The easi singles Mature is better than the regular easi singles. Hard to beat on a burger.

    Sometimes you see gourmet melts, which are like the cheese equivalent of a compount butter, though I'm not sure I've seen any this summer. M&S are a likely source for these.
