The vaccine bonus allowing fully vaccinated people from 3 households to meet indoors without any restrictions seems to point the way forward for a return to private BJJ training indoors.

I know it's not specified, but if I am fully vaccinated and have two teammates who are fully vaccinated then it would seem that if you were training together privately in your house there would no longer be any public health or legal impediment of any kind.

I know a lot of people will have been training away like this anyway, but nonetheless...

It'll be interesting to see when pod-based indoor training comes back. I can't see outdoor BJJ training being consistently do-able in Irish weather, although maybe weather-permitting you could have it at short notice.

A lot of clubs putting out the date of 5th July for the return of indoor training... nothing official yet tho

    Almost there lads.
Essentially a full year of training gone for you all.

10 years of solid training and then zero training for 8 months solid.

It feels surreal to be going back. Very glad.

Tell you what, this will be great for getting bodies onto the mats.

When we were able to go back for a few weeks last Sept, I didn't miss a single session because I knew it could be taken away again, plus I'd spent months not being able to train. It felt like a privilege. A few other regulars were the same.

    Who knows?

The Govt. are pausing because they want to come up with a system whereby only vaccinated people can eat & drink inside............ where does that leave gyms? Are only vaccinated people allowed train?

Bit of a shambles in this respect.

It will be interesting to see whether the plan for a 'corona pass' or antigen testing system (although think that's a bit of a box ticking exercise, I don't think NPHET will recommend antigen testing) that is being developed will also apply to indoor sports (BJJ), theatre, sporting events etc.

One thing I would point out for people who are fully vaccinated now:-
    Vaccine bonus
With the vaccine bonus, you can meet indoors with:

other fully vaccinated people from up to 2 other households
people from 1 other household who are not vaccinated - as long as no more than 3 households are there
You can do this without wearing face coverings or staying 2 metres apart.

The people you meet should not be at high risk from COVID-19 if they are not vaccinated
    https://www2.hse.ie/screening-and-vaccinations/covid-19-vaccine/get-the-vaccine/when-you-have-been-vaccinated/

'Meet indoors' is not specified in terms of the activities, but I don't see why fully vaccinated people can't train together, looks like you could meet with 2 other households.

I know a lot of people training BJJ are under 40 and may not be vaccinated yet, but that's going to change quickly if they now have access to J&J via their pharmacist.

That's my reading of it anyway, and that's aside from outdoor training like Kyuzo were organising(?)

Not a lawyer, by the way, just musing on the above.

A good few clubs are opening from tomorrow regardless of the government guidelines

Hi. I've been toying with the idea of starting BJJ.

    Anyone recommend somewhere around Lucan?

No interest in competing of dic measuring. Just looking to get fit and learn to protect myself.

    Thanks

Does anyone know where these new rules for hospitality, which were originally tied to indoor activates, leave us? I mean, have they just decided to forget about indoor sport completely? All of the revisions seem to be around pints but no mention of rolls!

Emailed plenty of TDs and not one of them has given me a response about the return of indoor sport. Pubs and restaurants open for people to socialise for their "mental health", yet sport which actively contributes to both physical and mental health is just pushed to the side. Absolute joke

  • Registered Users Posts: 734 ✭✭✭barryribs

I did the same yesterday after seeing your post and got a response to say that he will raise it with the Minister for health and let me know but I won't hold my breath

  • Registered Users Posts: 455 ✭✭TheSegal

I got a response from the secretary of Stephen Donnelly saying it's not his responsibility and to contact the minister for sport 🙄 Emailed the minister for sport on 3 consecutive days and not a peep other than "I acknowledge your email". Absolute joke

I see one gym close to me is opening tonight.

And another opening first week of August.

    Was something announced?

  • Registered Users Posts: 68 ✭✭DodoDojo

Are most gyms back open now just hush hush?

I moved home during covid so now need to join a new gym, but I know for sure my old gym is back open and I'm guessing most are the same?.

  • Registered Users Posts: 734 ✭✭✭barryribs

Two weeks on and still no response on this, I've only just realised that they are on their two months hard earned holidays. I'm going to try an independent TD anyway, I'll reference your contact with with minister for sport and health.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,193 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

Our gym is back tonight........... is this against restrictions? Does anyone actually know?

Like, ours is in a shared centre and so even if we wanted to go back at any point they were never going to let us........ but they're of the opinion that we're good to go back now?

  • Registered Users Posts: 734 ✭✭✭barryribs

The below is what sport ireland have on their website but if I were in your situation, I know what I'd be doing.

The following is not yet permitted:

    • Indoor activities, such as organised events, return of group training, exercise and dance classes will not yet proceed. It is anticipated that this will be a short-term delay, provisionally until July 19, pending the development of an appropriate risk-management system by Government.

  • Registered Users Posts: 455 ✭✭TheSegal

I've emailed Jack Chambers and Stephen Donnelly over 20 times now, everytime I get a receipt of acknowledgement from JC and nothing else. It's an utter joke that 40000 can attend Croke Park for GAA but martial arts gyms haven't even got a single word from the minister about what to expect in future. Gyms are opening unofficially across the country but ours is staying closed until restrictions are lifted so no one gets in trouble.

I think a majority of BJJ gyms seem to have re-opened in a discreet but not that discreet fashion. Not making any judgements, I know in some instance there was just no other choice if they were to survive. It sucks that people have been put in a position of being forced to do this.

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,335 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Don’t incriminate anybody, but just curious where you are training. PM if you prefer

we’re closed nearly 2 months now. Starting to crack it a bit

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,193 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

Everyone i'm training with is fully vaccinated, so although 14-15 months ago I would have chosen not to train due to the pandemic, I feel at this point we're training in a safe environment.

There are five BJJ/MMA gyms within walking/cycling distance of my house and I know for a fact that ours is the only one that closed during the pandemic and weren't training on the sly.

So I got a response. If anyone is having trouble sleeping, you can have a read of the below

Thank you for your correspondence on behalf of Barry Ribs to the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, T.D., regarding the resumption of indoor training, under the current Covid-19 restrictions.

There has been considerable progress in reducing infection levels since the peak of the wave of infection in late 2020/early 2021 because of the widespread adherence by the public to the public health measures in place, and this progress was sustained during recent phases of reopening in April, May, and June.

The government continues to follow its plan to review and monitor the control of the virus and follow the prevailing public health advice in support of a safe and gradual reopening. While significant progress is being made in relation to the roll-out of our vaccination programme and the epidemiological situation was broadly stable through most of June, the prevalence of the more transmissible Delta variant has since rapidly increased in Ireland and this poses a significant risk to those who are not yet fully protected though vaccination.

On 29 June, the Government announced the next phase of reopening the economy and society in line with Recovery and Resilience: The Path Ahead, with an emphasis on lower risk activities given the risks posed by the Delta variant. However, due to the public health situation at the time it was decided that higher risk indoor activities could not yet recommence.

Significant and sustained progress has been made on suppressing the virus over recent months due to the huge effort of people across the country. By working together, we have saved lives and limited the impact of the disease on society in Ireland. To protect the gains of recent months we must continue to practice basic preventative behaviours and to follow public health guidelines.

Currently outdoor training in pods of a maximum of 15 people is allowed and gyms, swimming pools, leisure centres are permitted to open for individual training only with protective measures. However, other indoor sporting activities including matches, group/team training and exercise/dance classes are not permitted. Information on the public health measures including indoor events and sporting events and exercise can be found at: https://smex-ctp.trendmicro.com:443/wis/clicktime/v1/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.gov.ie%2fen%2fpress%2drelease%2f7894b%2dpost%2dcabinet%2dstatement%2dresilience%2dand%2drecovery%2dthe%2dpath%2dahead%2f&umid=760ec251-8bc3-4797-95d1-4d32daac4775&auth=6872f6337a9b3dc6b8deb7cd57f4474464102c3f-e80d3860d80c91db2ba0884730acf9253dd7a687

To maintain our momentum, we need to continue to follow the public health guidelines in these coming weeks. Practicing those individual everyday measures is what will secure Ireland’s recovery from the pandemic.

I trust the above is of assistance.

I'm really hopeful that in September we will have a roadmap for what it will take for indoor sport to resume again legally. It's important that businesses are allowed to get out of the space they're in at the moment, where many are effectively being forced into breaking or fudging the law in order to survive.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,193 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

At this point, having seen the numbers availing of the vaccination programme and the other activities being allowed, surely there's no reasonable excuse to keep people from practicing indoor sport?

    High vax rates

Low hospitalisations and ICU incidences and slow growth in the former (with no real raise in the latter)

What's the problem? Let people roll!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 3,078 Mod ✭✭✭✭Black Sheep

Yeah, I was quite struck by figures in the Irish Times that say that nearly half (40.3%) of 18-24 year olds are fully vaccinated, and 24-49 it is 67.5%. Obviously that'll go up for both cohorts and there are a lot more people with 1 dose at the moment.

In fairness that was the plan all along, to let the vaccine program progress. They wanted for as long as possible to try to get the most people double jabbed as they could before allowing risky behaviours, but now we are heading in the right direction AND they also have to factor in the reality that people are training in facilities that are open illegally. I'm sure it's not just BJJ that's doing it, we know other indoor sports (At least the commercially run ones) are doing it too.

I still think the use of Covid certs for indoor sports makes sense, frankly. It would be unpopular with a minority, but so what. Get double jabbed, show the Cert to your gym just once, and away you go.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,193 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

I was training last night and I took a little straw poll to see who was double-jabbed.

Everyone. Every single person training last night has been fully vaccinated.

The latest stats show an 89% uptake in adults of dose 1 so far. That is insane! Add to that those with immunity having had Covid within the last 6 months........

I think it's time for a bit of common sense to be honest.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,193 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

Nabbed my blue belt last night boyos! A nice little surprise after the extended Covid layoff.

    Chuffed!

I see Sports Ireland is circulating a petition to have indoor sports come back on 6th September for pods of six.

Not sure I can get too enthusiastic about this as a measure because our vaccination rates are getting so high it seems like it's pointless. If 80%+ of people training are double vaxxed, and we could make it 100% of people if proof of vaccination was required, would that not be a more effective measure, and one that is actually less headache for everyone involved?

Separately I read that NPHET are pushing for no new relaxation of measures until, effectively, mid to late October, when the 16+ vaccination program will be totally complete. That has a ring of truth about it.
