Good to see Troy Parrott off the mark with his first goal for MK Dons.

Scully picking up where he finished last season. Was he injured for the training camp or just not selected?

Johansson on the bench tonight for Fortuna.

Manning starting on the left of a back 3, which is a bit of a surprise.

Man of the match too. Had Swansea injuries, because if not he might feature there more often for them.

Yeah you gotta feel that Brighton are getting to the stage now they'll just cash in and off load him sooner rather than later.

If he was doing it on the pitch then it would be one thing, you're backing up how you act by doing the business on the pitch but he's not. So comes across more childish than a lad confident in his ability because he's backing it up. As someone said you can't go around acting like George Best when you play like Leon Best.

He hasnt even come close to replicating Leon Best thats the thing! Leon best would be useful for us at the moment!

Well taken goal from Parrott yesterday. Makes the run for Robson and finishes well with his left. Had a couple of chances to level it for Dons, one where he tried to chip it over the keeper from just outside the box who did well to tip it over for a corner.

U18s travel to Hungary to play in two friendlies this Tuesday and Thursday. The U18s is to become a competitive age at underage now and they've made changes to the U19s Euros which will run similar to the Nations League. Uses four rounds instead of two but is being pushed back until the 2023 tournament.

    Republic of Ireland Under-18 Squad

Goalkeepers: Josh Clarke (Bournemouth), Owen Mason (Mansfield Town), Conor Walsh (Sligo Rovers).

Defenders: Tommy Fogarty (Birmingham City)Sean Grehan (Bohemians), Cathal Heffernan (Cork City), Alex Murphy (Galway United), Darragh Reilly (Sligo Rovers), David Toure (Shelbourne).

Midfielders: Billy Brooks (Lincoln City), Cian Coleman (Leeds United), Justin Ferizaj (Shamrock Rovers), Cian Kelly-Caprani (Derby County), Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh (Cork City).

Forwards: Edwin Agbaje (Ipswich Town), Jad Hakiki (Shelbourne), Rio McEvoy (Bolton Wanderers), Ed McJannet (Luton Town), Dara McGuinness (Shamrock Rovers), Luke Pearce (Southampton).

Ciaran Clark starts for Newcastle while Hendrick is on the bench. Conor Coventry on the bench for West Ham. If he's an unused substitute again it will be his 15th league game as an unused sub, with half his current match day selections coming last season.

Also Scully scored a cracker yesterday, and his penalty was good too.

McCarthy on the bench for Celtic for the first time. Imagine he's still building up fitness after missing pre season.

Paul McShane starting for Man Utd today.........

Tanganga was very good for spurs today so that’s bad news for Doherty

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

He's definitely made the most of Doherty picking up a knock in that Chelsea friendly. Tanganga had a good game in Spurs final pre season friendly and today. Duffy has done similar with Veltman being a close contact and Dan Burns being out injured.

Would this be the first player to transfer between both clubs since Desmond bought into Shams? @sugarman

McClean is supposedly attracting interest from Bolton and Wigan. The Wigan interest seems plausible, given he donated £5k to save the club last year. Depressing though, an Irish first team player dropping down to League 1. I wonder will Kenny take another look at Ryan Manning now, he was MOTM for Swansea this weekend, and if he starts playing regular, it'll be hard to justify the inclusion of a League 1 player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,827 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

Our midfield also looks to be in poor shape for the September internationals. Cullen is the only one starting regular, so you'd imagine he's a shoe-in. Unfortunately there's a whole pile of others who aren't playing or won't be available. Knight/Taylor are injured, can't imagine McCarthy wanting a call-up, Hourihane is in limbo, Hendrick isn't paying again, Brady still doesn't have a club, Browne is recovering from a hip injury, Arter/Molumby are training with the under 23's and not wanted, Byrne not featured recently for APOEL. An away game to Portugal couldn't possibly come at a worse time for us, we'll probably get the squad announcement sometime next week.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,787 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Surely we should see Gavin Kilkenny in the next senior squad? Especially given the outline Francie has given of our midfield options above

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

I'd say throw him in, it's a game where we're guaranteed **** all anyway, and the U21s will still have Connell, Johansson, Devoy and others.

We're crying out for a ball playing 6, and Scott Parker may have given us one that might actually be playing week in/out. Even if they think a start against Portugal is too soon they should still bring him with the senior squad. Chances are he'll still be pushed out wide right with the U21s.

Which leads me onto how the U21s really need to start using three at the back like the seniors, and it would actually suit them more than the seniors to be using it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Probably still go with McClean given he played more than Stevens during the training camp so to me he favours McClean as his back up to Stevens. Especially against Portugal he might favour McCleans defensiveness over Stevens.

Though if Swansea actually keep Manning as a CB in a back three then I wouldn't be surprised if Kenny tried him there. A left footed ball playing CB is also something we could do with.

Needs to look at more than one of the St Mirren lads imo. A few there playing regularly and as high a standard as league 1 would be.

The player situation is getting worse. Defence is still where we are strongest and given the game time players are getting Duffy, Clark and Coleman are the only guaranteed starters for me.

Parrott will no doubt get a run given his goals at international and now club level (again league 1 though) and Cullen will probably start.

We are facing into a lean few years I think as no one has made a proper breakthrough from the underage ranks.

Hopefully it's a permanent move because he can't afford to waste anymore time with how much he's wasted to injury at this point in his career.

Also see Tommie Hoban has retired from football at age 27. Gutted for the lad as he was looking good at Watford as a teenager, and was breaking into their team before injuries really started to take over.

He's not dropping both Egan and O'Shea. Doubt he drops either and the back three is Duffy, Egan, and O'Shea.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,787 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Saw it earlier alright. If he's producing that at Championship level then he should be in our next squad if fit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

O'Brien took part in pre season with Palaces first team and captained the U23s in their final few games of last season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,827 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

You'd have to think he should be in contention to make the squad, he's played every minute for Bournemouth (only three games admittedly). He looks like the type of player who Kenny should fancy, he was very good on the ball against WBA, if a bit lightweight. Fact is though, we don't have any standout midfielders operating at a high level. Hendrick and Hourihane are both Premier League players, but really only in name. If Kilkenny is playing at a high level in the Championship, he'd be in the squad on merit.

Another for Oko-Flex, he's scored loads since we signed him. Hopefully he can make a few first team squads soon.

    Nice finishes too.

    Coventry is very tidy player

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,827 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

The level of football at this level is just comical, look at the state of the defending for Coventry's goal.

None of Coventry, Okoflex, nor Odubeko have anything further to learn playing kids football. If Moyes isn't going to give them games, they need permanent or loan moves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,749 ✭✭✭Dr. Bre

West Ham are a good side . Moyes isn’t going to change his team. Best hope is wham go on cup runs and they get a chance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Well it is Arsenal, their seniors don't know how to defend either :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Our lads with Brightons U23s also had good games too last night. Both Andrew Moran and James Furlong linked up well to create two goals, with the second goal scored by Evan Ferguson.

The older lads might not suit how Potter want Brighton to play, well more so Molumby as Connollys issues are more than style of play. But these younger lads are more suited to how Potter want to play, and it's great they'll be coming through at a club who want to try and play a bit of ball.

Ferguson still only 16 and probably still not done growing. We've actually started having a few lads come through that are units and can throw their weight around a bit.

Idah looked better at doing it the other night and once he gets more experience defenders could find him a handful. Collins and McGuinness are two big units, similar to Duffy but Collins you'll assume is gonna play at a higher level with McGuinness hopefully reaching Duffy's level. Bosun Lawal only turned 18 so could grow a small bit more but he already looks like he should be playing rugby league instead.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,787 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

That first goal is a most "un-Irish" bit of play between the two lads, but in a good way. Great to see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

James McClean will be a Wigan player soon, and will be at their game tonight according to Dan McDonnell. Himself and Stoke have come to an agreement to terminate his contract and let him join Wigan on a one year deal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Bournemouth have signed experienced Orjan Nyland whose got 20 odd caps for Norway, and are still trying to bring in Newcastle's Freddie Woodman who made his Premier League debut at the weekend. Spent last season on loan at Swansea, but Newcastle's first and second choice keeper are currently out with injury and isolating.

    Good win for u18s. 2-0ft

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,827 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

Beautiful defence splitting ball played right through the middle from Dons. Parrott anticipated it, got between his two defenders, latched onto the ball and slotted it into the bottom right corner.

Peter Kioso from Swords lining out for Luton this evening.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,787 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Parrott and Bazunu both had very good games tonight going by reports.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Yeah Bazunu pulled off a fantastic save in the 90th minute to deny a point blank header that was headed down hard and fast at ground. Two clean sheets in his first two games, surely he starts for us in September.

Parrott had 5 goals in his last 6 games for club and country. 2 MOTM awards on the bounce, and pretty sure he was MOTM against Andorra.

His confidence must be sky high. Just need the other young strikers now to push this season too. Not sure if he starts in September, more so our opening game against Portugal. Think Collins and Robinson start that game.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,787 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

I think it's becoming more and more apparent that we are becoming very dependent on our young players.

Very few of the senior players are playing regular first team football at the moment. Also the fact that it was the young players who seemed to do most on the last international window to turn things around for Kenny.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Gonna be a long season for Alan Browne and Preston. Three straight defeats including a trashing from newly promoted Hull, and a lose to Huddersfield who finished 20th last season. Browne himself taking stick from fans after his reaction to them booing at the end of last night's game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,749 ✭✭✭Dr. Bre

    Lenihan for Blackburn

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,787 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

O'Shea moved into midfield for the final 15 mins

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,827 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

    Robinson and O'Shea's goals here - https://twitter.com/KennysKids/status/1428097533176320006

Ismael's direct, high pressing style is an absolute nightmare for opposition teams so far this season and is really suiting both O'Shea who is naturally good in the air, and Robinson who always seems to be able to pick up scraps in a goalmouth tussle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

How'd he do, always thought he'd do well as a 6 in midfield. He'd be decent enough with the ball at his feet to get by.

Another solid night for Gavin Kilkenny playing 90mins in the 2-0 win over Birmingham. Good sign too for Kilkenny that Parker rates him that he subbed off Emiliano Marcondes to bring on more attacking talent, and not Kilkenny. Shows that Parker trusts Kilkenny defensive. Surely a shoo in for the senior squad at least.

Aaron Connolly back in the Brighton squad for the weekend.
