Could be an early GC day but will be a long stage too at 202km. Intermediate sprint is close to the final climb.

The final climb was used at the Burgos tour a few weeks ago and many of the GC guys were there. Bernal looked ok but not his best on it, Landa looked really good and Bardet won the stage despite crashing on the descent. They are finishing on the summit today though so no descent. The view once they clear the tree line is spectacular, made me wonder if many do any gravel riding up there as there are lots of access roads for the wind turbines.

Currently 12:15pm the break of 8 has 3 minutes with 167km to go.

Theres an excellent article here from a few years ago. Lists a whole load of climbs which at the time were unused in the Vuelta. Many have since made an appearance and three of them are in this years version, picon Blanco, villuercas and the Gamoniteiro

Break being given a decent chance from the looks of things. 7:45 is the gap currently.

They've lost 3-4 mins in the last 10-15k, not looking likely now

Yeah Bahrain were drilling it behind for a while. Was expecting Movistar to come up and do a ride to nothing.

Aru up to the front there now ready to give it a go. Love to see him try something. He's actually smiling there too.

Dunno why UAE are helping the chase/attacking with Dombrowski up the road

Rog isolated there I think. Bahrain and Movistar have numbers still.

Where was landa? Caruso well back as well

Movistar being Movistar, Lopez chasing Mas when trying to gap the main field to the line

    Landa finished 9th I think.

I don't think Carapaz is in that much trouble. He usually improves as the 3 weeks roll on. Could see him staying just under the radar and pulling something out later on.

Picón has been used in Vuelta Burgos few times I believe. Last year and two weeks ago. It is always very windy at the top.

The thing is that la vuelta is run by Unipublic and they go where and which councel/city/county pays them to come. Possibly the same story in the Tour and Giro. :-)
