Shamrock Rovers go into first qualifying round unseeded but plenty of seeded sides they would fancy their chances against:

Lincoln Red Imps (Gibralter), Alashkert (Armenia), Kairat (Kazakhstan), Buducnoast (Montenegro), Flora (Estonia), Zalgiris (Lithuania), Dinamo Tblisi (Georgia), Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia), Shkendija (North Macedonia), Ferencvaros (Hungary), Sheriff Tiraspol (Moldova), Legia Warsaw (Poland), CLuj (Romania), Malmo (Sweden), Ludogorets (Bulgaria), Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia)

A 50/50 chance of a good draw there. A few you'd hope to avoid

Love the drama of away goals, very disappointed.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

It was of it's time. When travel was a big handicap in Europe it made sense to incentivise teams to try away from home. Nowadays not so much. I get it can turn a match on its head (Spurs vs Ajax) but I think the idea of extra time and penalties is a better option. If it turns out that it reverts to crap they can change it back like the Golden and Silver goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,330 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

Personally I think a goal is a goal. One goal shouldn't be "worth" more than any other. Let's see how it plays out - I bet it won't make a massive difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,079 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

I think it's a ridiculous idea to scrap it completely. It certainly had it's merits. Maybe get rid of it in Extra Time, but leave it as is.

I wonder if this is a precursor to something like knockout ties taking place in neutral venues across the continent instead?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,286 ✭✭✭✭citytillidie

Unfair that those playing 2nd have an extra 30 mins in front of their fans, should scrap the extra time too and just go to pens

Extra time is rarely entertaining. 2 knackered teams more afraid of losing than going for a winner.

Isn't that the point of seeding whereby teams that win their group are at home for the second leg?

Isn't that only for the first knockout round?

The 1/4 and 1/2 finals are based not seeded or based on group stage results.

I'm gutted at this move. They've taken away one of my favourite pieces of drama from the European games where the tie could swing so dramatically. Iniesta and Moura's late goals were iconic moments that will stand the test of time and they were thanks to the rule. Get rid of it in extra time fair enough but to get rid of it altogether is a poor call imo.

Between this and the convoluted new CL format UEFA want to bring in a few years from now, I'm starting to think that Super League may not have been the worst idea after all!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,050 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

I'm certain away goals will return in a few years, the assurances by the authorities that scrapping away goals will result in more exciting matches remind me of what they promised before they introduced the failed Golden Goal for extra-time all those years ago

The knock phase of the CL has been the best football for drama and entertainment for years now. It has just been fantastic competition to watch, this seems like an absolute disaster of a decision. Teams won't play that little bit more offensive away from home now as an away goal just isn't required anymore. Awful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,258 ✭✭✭✭y0ssar1an22

thought the away goal rule was introduced in the 1st place as the team playing away in the 1st leg just played for a 0-0 draw.

i wonder what has changed in their minds that the initial reason for the away goal rule no longer applies?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,022 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Feels like an "if it ain't broke, why fix it?" situation. European knockouts have been magic over the past few years - just don't touch it. Don't change a thing. Leave it as is because, for whatever reason, it's really really working.

I was in favour of suspending it for last season, since away/home meant less with no fans - especially with quite a few 'home' games being played a few thousand miles away from home. But with open travel and fans present looking likely by the time next years knockouts come around, that situation is now gone (hopefully).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,502 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

I am glad it has been removed. It often led to cagey first legs with home teams being very conservative, and I don't think it affected traveling teams' game plans very much.

Next Man City manager: You lot may all be internationals and have won all the domestic honours there are to win under Pep. But as far as I'm concerned, the first thing you can do for me is to chuck all your medals and all your caps and all your pots and all your pans into the biggest **** dustbin you can find, because you've never won any of them fairly. You've done it all by bloody cheating.

Yes that was the logic, but in practice what it really led to was the home team being more cautious and just being happy not to concede an away goal.

Personally glad to see it gone and it was no longer fit for purpose, at the end of the day a goal is a goal and thats they way it should be, the very notion that one goal is somehow worth more that another goal is absurd.

The women's Champions League games will be streamed for free on Youtube over the next few years.
Uefa has signed a groundbreaking rights deal for the Women’s Champions League that will mean the competition is streamed live for free around the world for the next four years.

The global sports platform Dazn has been awarded the newly centralised rights for the group stage onwards and has entered into a partnership with YouTube to ensure the competition will be freely available to watch around the world, excluding the Middle East, North Africa and China, where they have rights to clips and highlights, for the first time.

For the first two seasons all 61 games will be available to watch on Dazn and for free on a new dedicated Dazn Women’s Champions League YouTube channel. For the 2023-25 seasons all 61 games will be shown by Dazn and 19 will be available for free on YouTube.

RTE showing Monaco vs Shakhtar tonight, k.o. 8pm. Think this could be a great tie. Teams:

Monaco XI: Majecki; Sidibe, Maripan, Badiashile, Henrique; Martins, Fofana, Tchouameni, Golovin; Ben Yedder, Volland.

Shakhtar Donetsk XI: Trubin; Dodo, Vitao, Marlon, Matviyenko; Pedrinho, Antonio, Maycon; Tete, Solomon; Traore.

7 Brazilians in the Shakhtar line-up, so they should have plenty of flair about them. Nubel missing in goal for Monaco due to a gastric problem, so Majecki makes only his second start.

Full-time: First leg ends 1-0 to Shakhtar. Very nice solo goal from Pedrinho. Monaco had more chances but lacked quality with their final ball. Impressed by the young Shakhtar keeper Trubin who made several good saves. De Zerbi looks like he's doing well at Shakhtar, following his good Sassuolo spell. Sets things up nicely for the second leg.

Sheriff with one foot in the group stages after their 3 nil win, mental how this time last year Dundalk knocked them out of the Europa League qualifiers

Interesting Twitter thread about them, it appears they have some very wealthy (and possibly dodgy) backing.

Benfica scraped through last night, in a really dismal showing. They were down to 10 men after 33 minutes and then brought out the "time-wasting by numbers" play book. What is really galling is how many of them threw themselves to the ground feigning head injuries, and who were fine. Almeida looked like a man that had been shot at one stage but when he saw the referee was letting play continue he was up quickly enough. Joao Mario was on a yellow when he brought down a player but the referee played advantage so he didn't have to re-visit the scene because they could have had 9 players after that. He was subbed off quickly afterwards.

Don't know what can be done because the referees have to think that the head injuries are legit. Perhaps a 2 minute HIA off the pitch might be useful as a deterrent.

Pot 1: Chelsea, Villarreal, Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, Lille, Sporting Lisbon.

Pot 2: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Manchester United, PSG, Liverpool, Sevilla, Borussia Dortmund.

Pot 3: Porto, Ajax, RB Leipzig, Atalanta, Zenit St Petersburg, Benfica, Shakhtar Donetsk or Monaco, RB Salzburg or Brondby, Besiktas or Dinamo Kiev.

Pot 4: Club Brugge, Young Boys, AC Milan, Malmo, Wolfsburg, Dinamo Zagreb or Sheriff Tiraspol, Shakhtar Donetsk or Monaco, RB Salzburg or Brondby, Besiktas or Dinamo Kiev.

Will predict the predictable draw after the last knockout games later.

Ben Yedder has scored to level up Monaco's tie with Shakhtar. It's been a sloppy start from Shakhtar.

2-1 to Monaco in the tie now. Ben Yedder strikes again.

2-2 in the tie. Marlos off the bench finishes off a nice move. 15 minutes to go.

It's going to extra-time to see who takes the last CL spot. Monaco have been the better side but Ben Yedder and Volland have missed great chances to settle it. Might prove costly.

I'm always amazed at Shakhtar Donetsk. They haven't played in Donetsk in 7 years. They are just floating around from City to city. I've been to a Dynamo Kiev game before and it was only something like €1.50 for a ticket, and there was only around 5-6,000 there. I would imagine weekly attendances are probably worse for Shakhtar. There would be piss all TV money, I doubt sponsorship money would be massive.

I don't see how they function so well. They've been brilliant in Europe over the last few years and still dominating their own league.

Finding players and selling them is keeping the club alive, along with UEFA money. Really hope they get past Monaco

I read a stat that Nubel has conceded 4 goals in 5 shots in Ligue 1 this season, and he conceded from Shakhtar's only shot tonight. If they can have a few shots before the end they might nick it. Not sure how he is on pens.

...and he's been beaten again but don't think he can be blamed for that goal. Harsh one if that decides it.

Full-time and Shakhtar take the final spot. Monaco pay the price for not taking their chances. Pleased for De Zerbi and keen to see how he does in the competition.
