"It should be so lucky to even draw any comparisons to a Quantic Dream, even in a negative. It's games like this that make you realise how talented David Cage truly is."

Ah now, you've gone too far.

    Untitled goose Game

Not a bad game , quite relaxing to be an annoying goose in a countryside english town.

Nice and short too, made me laugh honking at people and when you picked up cutlery it made the goose look slightly sinister :D.

Nearly finished yakuza kiwami 2 which is great but playing it in drips and drabs , children of morta and was pulled back into overwatch by a few buddies of mine,

it is enjoyable but my god ranked is still as toxic as ever.

    Yakuza Kiwami 2

Had an absolute blast with this, bar the annoyingly long and drawn out cutscenes where you have guessed whats going on 5 minutes earlier, and a I just can't skip cutscenes :D.

The wackiness of the sidequests is great and the main story is very good apart from

The end which to be was a bit silly with all the double crosses the music and last fight was epic though.

Might boot up ff7 remake dlc and try finish children of morta which is great for dipping in and out of. I also started astral chain on switch which has really surprised me with its quality .

Not too sure after this then to start Yakuza 6 or Judgement as I wasn't overly gone on the new dragon engine would prefer the different styles to still be in game.

    Tomb Raider, definitive edition, 2013

    XBox Series X, 60 FPS 1080p

Rise of the Tomb Raider, definitive ediiton

    XBox Series X, 30 FPS 4K

Got these on the cheap in an Xbox sale. 7 quid for both I think.

There is also a regularly on sale triple definite edition with Shadow of the tomb raider on Xbox.

So, if you like these kinds of games then get that triple pack ...

The first game is fine and fun and zips along.

In fact, lots of zip lining. Too much :)

Lots of fun. Poor Laura dies in horrible ways, which you don't want to repeat.

There a a few tombs to explore, but nothing that really interested me.

    Enjoyable fun. Recommend

The second game is a big improvement on the first game.

Graphics, controls, gameplay loop, tombs, puzzles, story, ... all much better.

Also, more zip lining. Very easy after playing the prequel.

    Enjoyable fun. Recommend

    Skyrim, special ediiton

    XBox Series X, 60 FPS 4K.

After hearing so much about this game, I played it for "free" on Gamepass, 10 years later.

Looks gorgeous in places and very drab and dull in others. i.e. winter and grey/brown texturs.

    Still, it's a wonder in 4K and 60FPS.

Very easy. I was expecting something complicated and hard.

The level up mechanism, controls, map and quick saves are all well designed for time poor gamers.

The final section of the main game must be the easiest ever.

There is a lot of very similar and linear dungeon grinding, which are fun and then get repetitive.

There are no real puzzles or challenges that I can remember.

Rotating some pedestals and lining up icons ...

But maybe I just scratched the surface.

The game is huge and there is loads of content in the special edition.

I really didn't level up much. Couldn't decide which skill tree to expand.

So, lots to return to, if I ever do.

    Recommended.

    37. Sherlock Holmes: Crime and Punishments. Completed and platinumed.

I can’t believe I only discovered this franchise this year! Apparently there’s been a few of them and it’s somehow completely passed me by? Anyway, it primarily features a series of mini detective stories otherwise known as ‘cases’. They’re all episodic in nature which means you can bookmark your playthrough sessions nicely. Though there is a narrative through line involving Holmes’ douchey brother and ‘the Merry Men’, it only pop ups every now and then to remind you that it’s there - although does have an end that I won't spoil. The cases are the main focus here and they’re (mostly) great.

There are lots of conclusions that you can draw from the evidence you collect which tends to be based on motivation, the job/skills/capabilities of each suspect, the nature of the crime etc, but what it ultimately comes down to is what is the most plausible? The catch is that a lot of the time multiple conclusions are equally possible and therefore you can't rely on hard evidence alone. This is where the games demands your attention to detail and common sense. Sometimes you can even peg the right killer but guess the wrong way he/she did it if you don’t pay attention to little clues. In Holmes' case book there will be icons indicating how to proceed to unlock the next piece of the puzzle but occasionally you will have to listen out for something Holmes says or remember a particular item of interest to open up new options. In fact, the case journal will only give you the bullet points of what you've discovered. Often you’ll have to recall the details retained in your memory to get the full picture. You can’t fail dialogue options and I suppose the reason for this is because the multiple conclusions at the end is where you have to use your thinking cap, so failing dialogue options would ironically remove the challenge by leaving you with very little choice.

As for Holmes, himself, he's a bit… eccentric which often irritates his roommate and partner, Dr. John Watson. The very first tutorial sequence has you playing as Dr Watson and it establishes this dynamic very well. Watson is a bit more relatable whereas Holmes approaches every murder like an exciting mystery to be cracked. He delights like a little boy at the prospect of complicated cases and the more twisted the crime the sexier it is for him. There were times during the examinations of dead bodies where I was not convinced Holmes could thoroughly perform a full analysis without the aid of Watson, but given how annoying the ally A.I. pathing is (I’m talking Bethesda companion annoying) that’s probably for the best... The moral decisions at the end of each case - which entail deciding whether or not to turn in the alleged murderer - is where you can shape Holmes to your liking, i.e. whether he's morally just or legally compliant and they're not always one and the same. These moral aftermaths often result in life or death mini games with the accused which can be unforgiving if you have slow reflexes.

Speaking of mini games and puzzles, there are a ton of them and they are all surprisingly varied. I enjoyed the majority of them but they are undoubtedly bound to frustrate many players due to their vague instructions (I suspect the devs knew this hence why they provided the option to skip them all). The only mini game I didn’t like was the 'character profiling' where you intimately scan the NPC you're interrogating to locate details in their appearance that reveal personal information. It’s boring, finicky, and is obviously a showcase for last gen consoles which, at the time of this game’s release, was boasting great graphical enhancements.

Anyway, what I enjoyed most about this game are the little things. I loved pulling up the map and travelling to new locations (btw the load times are excellent for a PS4 game and you can view your journal while Holmes is riding the carriage too). I loved running back to Holmes’ flat to search his archives or fetch his dog, Toby, to track something. I loved going to the evidence room, unprompted, in Scotland Yard to analyse the suspects' belongings before interrogating them. I liked the idea of changing into different outfits to get potential suspects to open up to me. Stuff like this seem trivial but it plays into the overall detective fantasy if you’re into that. I also like that despite the fact that this is not an open world game you’ll constantly be going back and forth to familiar locations in each case, such as the aforementioned places. There was something comforting about returning to Holmes' flat and seeing his interactable telescope exactly as I left it by the window, or giving a cheeky one-liner to Toby who lounges around in different places in the room, or going to my mail to check all the letters Holmes received regarding previous cases. It reminds me of Max’s dorm room in Life is Strange in that it feels believable and grounded.

TL;DR: I am predisposed to liking games with Victorian London settings and I do like a good detective game so if you’re into either of those you’ll love this. You’ll also appreciate it even more if you’re a Sherlock Holmes fan. I bought the 2016 sequel and will definitely play that before Sherlock Holmes: Chapter 1, which is set to release later this year (but will almost certainly be pushed back).

    38. The Suicide of Rachel Foster. Completed and platinumed.

Talking about this game’s story and politics is doing it a service it doesn’t deserve. It deliberately wants to offend and shock people for attention, almost to a comical degree so I’ll just focus purely on the gameplay that it’s trying to mask. If you're interested in the actual narrative this guy sums up why it's trash:

Basically, you get trapped in a hotel one night with a ‘nice guy’ type on the phone providing you with instructions on how to navigate it in order to survive the next few days until help arrives. This is actually a really fun premise and the creepy ghost element of the hotel coupled with optional items you can find to make navigation easier make for a risk/reward factor. Unfortunately, the guy on the phone keeps calling you and never **** shuts up so any tension is quickly clipped by annoyance. So if you enjoy being constantly taken out by Mr Friend Zone as you’re forced to sift through long lines of dialogue options that builds or dismantles your “relationship” with him over the space of 3 or 4 hours tops then, sure, go for it. It’s also set in the 90s and the protag is a woman so in a smug, self-satisfied attempt to highlight how far we’ve come as a society in terms of gender equality since then (even though, ironically, the way certain subject matters are handled in this game proves that's not true) expect a lot of, "the 90s were sexist!" moments. In other words if you're easily triggered when the issue of sexism is merely implied you've been warned.

I can’t say, “don’t play this game” (even though on principle I really want to) as the gameplay is quite fun despite Mr Friend Zone doing his best to ruin it and hey, you may even enjoy the story and characters if you have no morals. But if you do have anything resembling a soul then I would say DON'T PLAY THIS DESPICABLE GAME

Oh, and it has a PS5 and PS4 version so double plat for me. Uh…it looks pretty, I guess?

    Astro's Playroom

I finally got my PS5 and decided Astro was the right game to play first. i'm sure everyone who has a PS5 has played through this so there's not much I can add. It's a delightful game, looks brilliant and really shows off the Dualsense controller. For me the Dualsense is what really sets the PS5 apart, it was really enjoyable to use.

My only complaint is that I wish the game was longer!

    FF7 Remake :Intergrade Intermission DLC

Played the majority of this including the addictive game of fort condor,

It was very short for 20 euro DLC but it was highly entertaining, actually makes me very excited for ff7 remake part two.

Yuffie was great fun to play as and super fast with her abilities and the synergy with sonon.

Looks amazing also and super fast load speeds on ps5 doesn't make me want to replay part 1, I didn't bother playing through intergrade even though there is a different ending.

Looked that up and it looks interesting , it looks like that Zack and cloud are in the same timeline rather than a multiverse sitch , which could have big ramifications per remake part two.

Currently blitzing my way through children of morta on gamepass which is absolute hidden gem with the pixel art gameplay and story.

Unsure what to tackle after this , thinking about the ascent on gamepass or metro exodus on ps5 or even starting Judgement.

    37. Yakuza: Like a Dragon

    Yakuza: Like a Dragon

    Yakuza goes JRPG.

The thing about Sega and RPGs is that they as the company is very arcade and action game focused they never really make many RPGs, which is a shame because nearly every RPG they make is fantastic. The Phantasy Star series, Panzer Dragoon Sage, Skies of Arcadia, Valkyria Chronicles. They're all incredible. It just baffles me to hear the likes of the creator of Panzer Dragoon Saga lamenting that he didn't make it an action game. Dude! You made one of the greatest RPGs of all time! Yakuza: Like a Dragon is up there along with all the Sega RPG greats.

While it might surprise people that Yakuza going JRPG works so well, it shouldn't be a surprise since Yakuza has always secretly been an RPG, right down to having random battles. The new battle system is pretty much a straight up Dragon Quest clone. The job classes you can take are pretty much Dragon Quest jobs and the battle system has the same emphasis on status effects and buffs that DQ has. There's a few 'Yakuza' elements like how the party can use items in the environment, but it's pretty much dragon quest. That's no bad thing considering how good that battle system is. My only complaint here is that the battle system only comes into its own in the end game with some really tough boss battles that are a joy to figure out and over come. The contrivances the writing goes to to try and explain how the new battle system fits within the more grounded Yakuza world are some of the best parts of the early game. The turn based combat is explained by someone asking why Ichiban lets enemies hit him before hitting them back.

Speaking of the new protagonist Ichiban, he is the star of the show. He is just a bundle of positivity that is infectious and has the right amount of stupidity offset by just good nature. He's just a damn nice guy. Kazama will be missed but Ichiban is a more than worthy successor. I'd go so far as to say I prefer him.

The story is the usual japanese TV drama writing. Basically it's kind of crap. There's some very convenient plot twists and it's very silly but it's carried out with such flare that I never really minded and just let myself be swept up in its wild ride. The side quests are where the game shines. The game is laugh out loud hilarious and most of the humour is in the side quests. It's worth doing them all just to see how deep the crazy gets.

As with all Yakuza games the setting is a real stand out. The open world is small but its packed with so much detail. There's a tonne of minigames to do and unlike other RPGs like say Final Fantasy VII where the minigames are just all universally awful, all the mini games in Yakuza are well made and loads of fun. There's so much to see and do and it's very easy to get distracted from the main quest just messing around and spending all your money in the arcade.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is one of the best RPGs I've played in a long time. The main story can drag a bit with over long cutscenes but avoiding the story and getting up to mischief and exploring the city is where all the fun of Yakuza is.

    Children of morta

Already at game 30 of completion this year, this was the most I managed last year. Really enjoyable indie roguelite but similar to hades every "death" offers a bit more of either story expansion or a new character.

Combat is a simple enough affair but I found the story to be very engaging and the whole plot point of family overcoming the odds really resonated with me.

Love gamepass for this reason as it was already there I just give it a try rather than risk it on a nindie sale.

Currently in a bit of a hiatus in regards to games, started metro exodus on ps5 enjoyable enough but the dialogue and characters seem a bit vapid, also dipping in and out of astral chain on the switch.

Working my way up to either start AC Valhalla, Yakuza 6 or Judgement but after Yakuza Kiwami 2 I think I need a break from Yakuza.

    GAME: Heart of Darkness

    PLATFORM: PlayStation 1

If you've ever played the original Prince of Persia, BlackThorne, Flashback, Another World (especially) and liked them, then you'd enjoy this.

I first got this game for Xmas 1998 when it came "bundled" with my first ever PS1.

I never took to it as a child but as I got older I learned to love it more.

I've seen the ending of the game (thanks to my chip cartridge) and I've played the final level (thanks to the same cartridge with cheats enabled) but this was the first time I ever beat the game from beginning to end.

It's a cinematic platformer more akin to Another World but not too indifferent to the other aforementioned games.

I managed to stream the whole thing live, which I was personally delighted with - now I can see the whole thing whenever I want -- immortalised.

I remember the hype for that game. It looked insane at the time but kept getting delayed more and more. By the time it was released it looked old hat and platforming and games had progressed way past it.

It was a big deal at the time that Sega paid for timed exclusivity at the time to try and save the Saturn but the game was so delayed it came out after the Saturn was abandoned. I remember reading about it next to a resident evil 2 preview so the writing was kind of on the wall for Sega at that stage.

I heard it's a decent game just extremely difficult and just couldn't love up to its hype.

    "just extremely difficult"

It's not and I don't consider myself some badass gamer or anything.

Anyway, love Heart of Darkness; at the time it was my favourite game ever. I remember I used to obsessively draw the title logo over my school books. Brings back a lot of good memories. I need to find my old Playstation games as they're scattered around at my parents house. I might just rebuy some second hand copies if they're available.

It's difficult in the same sense that it requires trial and error, just like Another World etc. It doesn't require any combination of buttons to do basic platforming like what Flashback would require. It can leave you scratching your head when met with some puzzles but overall it's a very feasible game.

And if I can beat the game pissed on whisky and Irn-Bru, then any normal person can lol

Can't deny the visuals either, though. It's stunning. I especially love the prerendered environments and there are a lot of times where the game goes from "in-game" to cutscene almost seamlessly. It's really well done.

The cut scenes and music blew me away at the time. Come to think of it, it's a pretty scary game for kids especially those afraid of the dark lol

The hilarious thing about that game's levels of violence and overall dark tone, is the game is rated 3+

    Asterix

I'm kind of surprised by this one because it's a bit of a hidden gem. A Sega developed platformer made only for the European market and it's really good.

Is your standard 8 bit platformer, although one of the best 8bit platformers I've played. What really stands out is how gorgeous it is. The sprites are big, colourful and detailed and really capture the look of the comic. There's some gorgeous intermission screens as well. This might be the best looking 8bit game I've seen.

After the first two stages you get a choice of either asterix or obelix for each stage and depending on the character the level can be totally different or you'll take a wildly different route through an existing level. Asterix can use a variety of potions with differing effects and can slide into small gaps while obelix can smash his way through destructible scenery.

There's a few design niggles and slow down but it doesn't detract from the fact that this is one of the best platformers on the master system. If there's one flaw it's the naff music.

I didn't cheat by playing a load of fighting games! 😋

I'm actually finding the thread is making me focus on finishing games a lot more than I should. I think having a good mix of RPGs and short retrogames is helping me keep the numbers up but I'm also liking that I'm getting around to these games whereas I'd be putting them off previously.

Now to play an entire evening of 1 hour long visual novels to smash your total! 😆

    39. McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure|Megadrive

    McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure

So what am I doing playing a game that's very obviously a Corporate piece of propaganda masquerading as a videogame?

Well one of my favourite developers is Treasure and this is their first game. I always thought it was their second as it came out as their second game in the west. Basically when Treasure was formed they took this game on for Sega to fund their passion projects. Treasure would go on to produce classics like Gunstar Heroes and Dynamite Headdy for the Megadrive.

I always bounced off this game as I played it on the default difficulty where the enemies are damage sponges and you take way too much damage but dropping it to beginner makes the game way more fun.

While this game is far from Treasure's best work they definitely didn't phone it in. The game really shows off the team's technical chops in many places, right from the start the Treasure logo scales and rotates on to the screen, an effect the megadrive should not be able to do. It looks bright and colourful with massive sprites.

The game hints at some of the wild ambition that would become a staple of later Treasure games. Levels have gimmicks that keep the game fresh and it's only towards the end when it becomes a bit more normal that the game gets a bit dull. Bosses can only be damaged by letting them take some of your health to literally chew on.

The game was obviously made by the Dynamite Headdy team. Ronald's moveset is like a proto headdy, the engine feels like an alpha test for that game and the music and humour are very similar. There's even an enemy towards the end of the game that would suggest this team also went on to develop Mischief Makers.

It's a pretty decent game that just pales in comparison to what Treasure would later produce. Treasure have done a few work for hire projects in their time and while they are never their best work (well other than the outstanding Astroboy GBA game) they never phone it in.

The story of the game is baffling. Ronald is looking for 4 pieces of a treasure map.... supposedly to find treasure? So when he finds all the pieces he finds out the treasure is on the moon. So he goes to the moon, crashes his rocket, beats the **** out of the boss who then says he is afraid Ronald was after his treasure. Then Ronald said he isn't, he is just looking for a way to fix his rocket and they all live happily every after. Tell me this Ronald, why the feck did you fanny about getting a Treasure map and going to the moon then you absolute fanny! Unless of course it's an allegory about McDonalds causing untold environmental damage and then denying all responsibility.

There is one big negative against this game. The third stage has some extremely racist caricatures of South Island natives. I think they were changed to robots for the western release and I must have been playing the japanese version of the game but it took me back a bit.

Same. I've always been a bit of a completionist but this thread has helped me clear some stuff in the backlog that's been there for an embarrassing amount of time.
