So West Indies set 329 to win. They have scored tonight 49 for the loss of a single but seriously carelessly given away wicket. Powell run out having failed to ground his bat with it in the air despite being about a foot home over the line.

280 more runs needed from tomorrow’s play. RRR will be about 2.9 give or take.

outfield slow as fuuukkkk, value for shots not great, some shots on other grounds are going for 4, some today only 2....day 5 pitch tomorrow , deliveries misbehaving, outfield slow... the first session will decide it...if WI only loose one wicket and can put on 80 runs in the morning, I’d fancy them, just... 3/4 down by lunch, draw or Pakistan victory.

Well, West Indies at lunch are 5 down 113/5... so the remaining play will be them just trying to play for a draw, 5 down and the way Pakistan are bowling you'd fancy Pakistan...

Brilliant start by England and Anderson. 12 overs gone, India 26/3 off 12. Anderson bowling like a man possessed, like a 25 year old possessed ..taken 3 wickets, conceded just 6 runs, off 6 overs.

Robinson has been economical if not very threatening and Curran getting lots of swing and more or less accurate and threatening.

Great start by England, Anderson seems fired. Funny how thus happens in cricket, the team with the momentum and confidence very often don't back it up...

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,414 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Totally, 56/4 at lunch. Rabbit in headlights batting by India, but deadly accurate and threatening by England.

Jimmy Anderson, 39, bowled 8 overs, 6 runs conceded, 5 maidens, 3 wickets... guy is a freak.

rest of the bowlers super accurate, economical and threatening.

There is a nice bit of spice between the teams with Root, Anderson, Kohli and Bumrah at the centre of it, hanging over from the first test when there was niggle on andoff the pitch. You can tell from the celebrations of Anderson and Root that the wicket of Kohli was sweet. England will be hoping to dismiss India for less than 220. Despite the performances of the lower order of India in the first test, England will be confident of doing this if they can dismiss Pant and Jadeja cheaply

Good bowling by England but terrible batting by India, what was Pant at there?

Gas how much Kohli has got under Anderson's skin!

Maybe an England away series isn't the best place for an aggressive player like Pant. That said Rohit has done alright.

Whoops... he didn't look so great there.

India 67-8... English bowlers have been unreal... India though batting like a amateur club team.

edit : 67/9 Curran on a hat trick.

Just shows how awful England's tactics against the tailenders were at Lords.

This is shocking by India, arguably worse than England last week. Great bowling yes but still. Interesting to see how the pitch plays for England's batting but they have a big chance to level the series here.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,414 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

All out 78... weather forecast is now set very fair for the remainder of the test so unless the Indians can come up with one hell of a bowling performance coupled with a collapse by the English this will or should see the series very nicely poised at 1-1.

Indians need to bowl the English out for about 170 or else it’s goodnight.

    Eng 8-0 after 2 balls

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,963 ✭✭✭blackcard

Good start by England 18/0 after 4 overs. England need to stay positive with their batting aiming for a run rate of 3/over. India were going nowhere with their batting

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,414 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Yep, 71-0 now, Burns and Hameed have looked relatively untroubled... a very slow run rate.

india and Kohli up to their usual disruptive tactics, looking to get the ball changed, they eventually succeed even though the previous over the original ball was going through the rings at ease.... strange.

scores level, English have all wickets intact, cant see past the English now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭MFPM

England utterly dominant here. Awful day for India.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

How often does it happen, a side gets bowled out for nothing and the other team then knocks off the runs so easily. India haven't turned up at all. Need to make something happen soon or it 1-1.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,414 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

India bowlers while economical on the whole never really had the English openers in much trouble barring the couple of not so close but hopeful lbw shouts and an edge going through the slips...

A first innings lead of 300 plus is probable... which will make England odds on even at this early stage of the test to take the win and level the series.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Ishant got England off to the best start. Awful over, wiped out over 10% of the deficit there. Like I said that's how it goes. Demoralised bowlers against a buyont batting side.

They talked a lot about Stokes today, it being the two year anniversary of his great innings at Headingley. His bowling from the day before is what dragged England back into that game really. So India can still get out of this if they show up tomorrow. As it is England hugely on top. Perfect day for them.

Good to see Hameed in the runs.

Good start by England but as I type Hameed goes for 68...164/2.

England are essentially 86/2 here.. India have more of a spring in their step the main catalyst being Bumrah... if they can squeeze one more out before lunch they’ll be reasonably happy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭MFPM

Decent if not spectacular response by India today after a shocking display yesterday.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,753 ✭✭✭Doodah7

England absolutely cruising with the lead already over 160 with eight wickets remaining. Root with YET ANOTHER Test fifty and Malan justifying his re-selection. England are likely to win this by an innings unless they succumb to one of their usual collapses!

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,414 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Yep, 100% England’s to lose and the way Root and Malan are batting and with what batting is to come, that’s looking extremely unlikely... England would have to throw this away, weather still very favorable for a guaranteed result...

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Could get very ugly for India. Sun is out, flat pitch and bowlers tiring. Another 100 odd overs in the field chasing the ball everywhere usually means quick wickets when England bowl again then.

What were India doing in the ten days post Lord's. Unrecognisable.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,772 ✭✭✭byronbay2

Century up for Root, this is some hiding England are giving India! India 78 All Out and England cruising along at 336 for 3. England surely heading for 500+ now.

You can see the dislike between these 2 sides by the OTT celebrations. I'm happy to see England giving it back to India after their antics in the first 2 tests.

I would not have believed the current situation was possible before the match. India have been so professional and hard-working in the first 2 tests but they have made a right mess of this one. Still, it will be good for the series to get back to 1-1 anyway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Watching batting greatness with Root. It's how effortless he does it.

This would have been a tailor made for Ben Stokes. Bairstow and especially Buttler haven't been able to transfer their white ball form to test cricket at all. Stokes has gone into proper T20 mode loads of times. Ali and Curran more likely than Buttler to do something other than blocking it and chipping it straight to someone .

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,414 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Happy to see the Indians get put to the sword too, on the whole they seem like a pretty unlikable bunch of individuals...Siraj takes a wicket just now and proceeds to celebrate by running around giggling like a 12 schoolgirl...with his hand over his mouth, weird...

then after running around celebrating as the new batsman Robinson is about to take guard he calls on the physio mid over for himself ... he’s back now bowling 83mph.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭MFPM

Really odd performance by India after last week, they're by a distance a better side than England but they have been badly exposed by the English bowlers and batsmen today and yesterday. England will win but India need to bat well (particularly Kohli who has to start delivering serious runs) and try to make some fight of it to gear themselves up for the Oval. Great batting by Root, head and shoulders above the rest of their batsmen, notable once more though that Bairstow and Butler couldn't cash in despite England broadly coasting in the game.

England will be satisfied with that start. Not exactly knocking on the door in terms of threatening with the ball but no free or easy runs... nicely disciplined.

Indian openers wanting drinks after 11 overs... no drinks breaks scheduled, 17 degrees in Leeds, fielding side wearing sweaters... not much running between the wickets, what gives ? the umpires too come on ! Considering this India side and captain are known for absolutely taking the piss send the twelfth man back and play !
