Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

One of the absolute greats. Before my time but my dad would inevitably go on about how good he was whenever Germany were playing on the telly. Loved bringing up the subject of Gerd Muller.

    Rest in peace.

Sad to hear that. He'd be worth a fortune nowadays in his prime.

No question the greatest striker/goalscorer ever. His ratios across the board will never be matched. If he played the game now, he'd probably average a 2.1 goals per game ratio

RIP Gerd Muller. Loved watching him & Cruyff on the rare occasions we got to see football in the 70s.

He's only about 20 club goals worse off than C.Ronaldo.

    From about 180 less games.......

He'd have easily had the international record if he'd played more games too.

An absolute beast of a goalscorer.

For those who have never witnessed him play, nor seen footage of him playing they will still know the name.

His goalscoring record is phenomenal, especially when you look at the ratio.

Had his personal struggles after football and was suffering from Alzheimer's

    A genuine great, R.I.P

Kleines dickes Mueller. Best ever German forward. He didnt score awesome looking goals but he scored many many goals. There is a story about him when he was in his last youth league year in Bavaria he scored well over a hundred goals that season. The ultimate box striker. He got 'something' on it. I was a little boy at the end of his career in Germany but I do remember him well.

Bayern Munich wouldnt be what they are today without him. Three European cups in a row, winning goal in a WC final. Then USA, alcoholism and needed to be 'rescued' and brought back to sobriety and Germany by his former team mates. Gave him a job at Bayern too. Hist last years werent happy, alzheimers and care home. Very sad but what a footballer in his day. RIP.

We see more of this nonsense about Ronaldo being the greatest after tonight's game. Sure he's one of the best goalscorers ever, but one of the greatest players ever? Surely not?

His greatness is predicted on his goals. Yet Muller was more prolific. No one says Muller was better than Cruyff or Maradona, yet scored more. Guys like Muller were often seen as just goalscorers.

So it's interesting to see how the criteria for greatness changes for Ronaldo. He too is an outlet, yet measured against the very best, despite being just a goalscorer.

Objectively, if the parameters for greatness are now stats and goal ratios, is it time the football world accepts Muller was the greatest ever?

If you're going to go down that route then Sandor Kocsis (part of the magic Magyar team who reached the world cup final in 1954 and famously thrashed England in Wembley in 1953) had a slightly better ratio over slightly more international games than Muller.

In reality though I don't think you can compare different players from different eras with any great level of accuracy. Kocsis would have faced very different challenges to Muller who would have faced somewhat different challenges to Maradona who played in a vastly different era to Messi & Ronaldo. They are/were all ridiculously talented and we should embrace them as such without having to continuously have this tedious comparison argument.

Even in an RIP thread to one of the legends of the game, it knows no bounds.
