The more I see of this, the more my opinion see-saws wildly all over the place. It looks like it's going to be played absolutely razor-straight with a distinct Seven / Zodiac serial-killer vibe, while Batman himself came off positively psychotic in the trailer. These are not terrible ideas - quite the opposite TBH if the film gives us a too-rare glimpse of Batman the World's Greatest Detective - I'm just not sure I have the appetite for yet another grim, glowering Batman right this second.

Hoping we get a new trailer soon, maybe at DC's FanDome in October.

3 hours. Ye gods. I watched Shadow in the Cloud the other day and it was 80 minutes - more like 70 without the credits. You could watch it twice over and still be in time for Batman's climactic end! Hopefully this will be a purposeful 3 hours, and not a bunch of mandated, pointless chase scenes for the trailers and 4 quadrant pitch.

The tweet has done nothing for my utter indecisiveness as to whether I'm excited for this or not. Plenty of films have tried to be Seven, most failed; and that was without the executive level pressuring the creative process. Man I've not been this conflicted over a superhero film in ages.

Looks and sounds brilliant to me. Trying to keep my hype in check and 3 hours sounds a bit much but man, can't wait for this to come out.

Presumedly still in fairly rough form. If so they could get that down to 2hrs 30 or less without cutting a single scene or line of dialogue.

I find it impossible to take early social media impressions of any film seriously these days - that extends to many critics tbh, not just anonymous test screening accounts. There’s just so much uncontrolled hyperbole from people who get to see a film early.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

It's the one aspect of film criticism where accusations of bias, or being bought off, are most valid. Be it the online bloggers just excited to be included, journos accepting junkets from marketing, with many otherwise inclined/pressured to gush praise as an attempt to win future invites.

Sometimes the praise matches the final product, to be fair - The Suicide Squad earned the plaudits IMO - but it's always worth assuming the wildest praise is not entirely authentic or sincere. Especially when they like name-dropping other, iconic, films.

IMO there’s different versions of it. With superhero films and various blockbusters, there’s a parade of bloggers and writers for various clickbait / fan sites who get invited to see it early with the expectation they’ll deliver gushing early tweets. They always deliver, and then the praise usually cools significantly (if not outright turns to pans) when more established reviewers get to see it.

The more established critics, meanwhile, tend to show off their hyperbolic side when it comes to film festivals :) I have a bit more sympathy here as a big film festival is a crazy, exhausting time especially when you’re trying to churn out reviews to hit embargoes… but there’s always a plethora of raves from festivals that don’t always translate to the timeless, widely-acclaimed classics the very early reviews sometimes make them out to be. Some do of course (it’s the nature of the beast when most major world cinema productions premiere in that format), but yeah festival reactions should be taken with at least a grain of salt. Sundance tends to be the ultimate example of when audience / critical response at the festival doesn’t necessarily translate to actual hits or critical darlings.

Oh my. This is getting interesting. It appears that Gotham City is getting a more realistic look in the movie when compared to the other Batman movies.

... Now, Reeves' film will explore the detective side of Batman, hopefully accounting for a more intense and psychologically thrilling story.

Don't toy with my emotions, Matt Reeves.

Wasn't Gotham on TDK and TDKR just New York/Chicago. I don't remember anything special about Gotham in those movies which is a shame because in BB Gotham genuinely felt and looked like a city of crime but then they ditched the slums area and the monorail.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

The Dark Knight was Chicago, the film almost never tried to hide it. Various landmarks were clearly in shot at many points. It was always jarring compared to the slumland that was Batman Begins' urban aesthetic, with The Narrows basically ignored and wiped off the map (IIRC a character remarked in TDK The Narrows were "lost").

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,463 ✭✭✭silliussoddius

I think NY suited TDKR more because of all the bridges, which helped with the idea of the city being cut off. TDKR also filmed in Pittsburgh. I think the Narrows parts from BB were filmed in Hong Kong.

The Narrows were inspired by the slums of Hong Kong but were mostly filmed on a set built in an aircraft hanger in the UK. I don't think Nolan was too happy with how it turned it which is why the Narrows doesn't appear again in the series.

A pity 'cos The Narrows gave the city a degree of personality that was slightly lost in the sequels, especially TDK and its aforementioned, obvious Chicago-based locations. Not that it had any adverse effect on the final film's quality mind you, and 100 other viewers probably never noticed how Chicago'y it all was; and by all accounts, nor was it as egregious a decision as making Metropolis & Gotham two cities at opposite sides of a river/bay, within sight of each other - as seen in the Synderverse 🤦

"Recently, IndieWire published an interview with The Batman's James Gordon actor Jeffery Wright, where he revealed that the Gotham City in the new movie will be a far cry from all the other Gothams fans have seen before. He suggested that the depiction and aesthetic of the setting is far more realistic than in any of the previous films, and it helps the movie relate to several real-life locations and situations. Wright also commended the director for his skills to imbue a sense of gritty realism into his work, recounting how Reeves incorporated themes of corruption and class divide into The Batman. He added that the stuff that Reeves brought from "the outside world" aligns his movie with the contemporary era, thereby giving it a lot of "relevance." Read what Wright said below"

So basically, Jeffrey Wright hasn't seen The Dark Knight trilogy.

All the subsequent themes have been in the shadow of Elfman's iconic score; though Giacchino is a talent. Will be interesting to see if Giacchino aims for a repeatable theme or something more of a soundscape

Well, at least they're recording it on arguably the best space for orchestral scoring...Abbey Road, Studio One.

Giacchino is terrific, excited to see what he does, but I agree, he has a lot to measure up to against Elfman's score.

New trailer confirmed for DC FanDome next week (16th).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

Pattinson felt sooo out of place in that clip!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,543 ✭✭✭dublinman1990

There is a new batcave lego set which puts Riddler & Commissioner Gordon in the batcave which may have an interesting take on the movie. Batman has a new jail cell in the Batcave to place prisoners into it. There is also some cryptic messages from Riddler that have to be read with special glasses.

The Batman trailer for this year's DC Fandome will be at 2 minutes & 36 seconds.

I wouldn't read too much into that. Toy play sets and figures from movies have often been really loosely based on the movies they came from. I'm thinking back to the toys I had from various movies, like the Jungle Explorer Jeep from Jurassic Park which came with a flip-out cannon. There was no cannon of any kind on that vehicle in the movie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,007 ✭✭✭Mr Crispy

    The cannon wasn't canon.

It does sound great, but it's incredibly similar to Departure of Boba Fett from the Empire Strikes Back:

I'm looking at this wondering what the point is.

I assume it's not meant to be, but it just looks like a sequel to Nolan's trilogy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,257 ✭✭✭The White Wolf

It will take a lot to replace Bale's trilogy for me but this is just a different take, one that looks promising to me based on this trailer.

I really like Reeve's ability to mesh surreal and real together convincingly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,910 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

I really didn't like Nolan's trilogy, Batman Begins felt like the only Batman film in it to me with the 2 sequels being generic action man films (yes, minority opinion I'm sure). To me, The Batman looks like a return to actual Batman and i couldn't be more excited.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,057 ✭✭✭✭Snake Plisken

Epic Trailer, it won't top Nolan's Batman for me But I look forward to seeing this in the cinema Fighting scenes are brilliant. Farrell looks and sounds great

I’m sold. Some parts reminded me of Seven.

Biggest Batman, Superman, DC fan around. Can't get excited for this. Trailer does nothing for me. Hope I'm proved wrong. Why the need to rush to reboot again considering you have properties still active.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,230 ✭✭✭MOR316

    We'll see...

    Utter **** if I'm honest...

    But, let's see

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,679 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

The trailer has me intrigued enough but will be hard to beat the trilogy (barring the final instalment)

My biggest problem is imagining Pattison as Batman - doesn't click with me
