Ridiculously slow over rates and constantly going off for "bad light" throughout the series. The fans are being absolutely shafted.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭MFPM

Apparently, the teams get fined and they lose World Test Championship points but it doesn't seem to be having any impact. It's been an issue for decades.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

I think Australia missed out on the WTC final because of their over rates versus India.

I remember they started to give suspensions to captains but Sky Sports were giving out about Jason Holder being suspended against England. "We want to see the best players etc".

Exciting day in prospect, the sun is out, should be a good day for batting and India should be able to accumulate a big lead or will the batting frailties on show in previous tests return? India favourites but England by no means out of it.

Root having a laugh, the ball misses the bat by about 8 inches and was missing the stumps by the same, wasted review, desperation over determination..

with the lead heading towards 300, the only deliveries that seem to be causing the Indians problems are those bowled in short of a length.. yet there is no short leg, there is a silly mid on that is halfway towards midwicket. Neither catching or really run stopping...About 10 balls ago the ball ricochets to where short leg would be..

one slip, great chance for a run out but England don’t capitalize.

England have batted very well in this evening sessions, the pitch is still very good but the Indian bowling has been dreadful, they haven't looked threatening at all - too short and nothing at the stumps. Ashwin sitting in the stand, hard to believe he wouldn't get something out of the pitch and be more threatening than anything to show this evening.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,413 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Yeah, stumps and England have been excellent. Probably only twice have India produced a delivery that might have seemed like having a chance of taking a wicket.. Required run rate by my rough maths is about 3.2 tomorrow.

Doable. No demons in that pitch right now.

Get up to 150 by lunch and say just one or two down, it’s on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Draw, India, England is how I see today. Run rate isn't bad but a few wickets will soon see it go towards five runs an over. England can't be losing this if it continues this flat.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,413 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

the India field placings seem to want to primarily stop the easy ones and twos, as opposed to pressuring to get wickets.. many fielders in fact 8 tight in the circle in fact only two outside... the heavily packed infield placed to try and disrupt the flow of runs easy runs but I’d have thought with England none down and looking pretty comfortable, plenty of time left and runs on the board, the pitch with precisely zero demons that India would have a short leg, silly mid off, silly mid on, pressure the English batsmen, take wickets, they need wickets.

3.3 runs an over required from here in....should be doable.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,118 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Run rate creeping up towards 4, don't think it's gonna happen. Ben Stokes would have been fairly handy here.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,413 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Yes, somebody of Ben’s mindset, ability and fearlessness would probably have influenced Kohli to scatter the field more...leaving more available ones and twos.

Root with a classy reverse sweep for four, first ball after lunch, then plays defensively to a free hit ! Mind boggling....just throw the bat at it !

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,413 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

A good delivery by Jadeja but Hameed will look back at that shot and wince... he has batted excellently so far but comes down the pitch doing his best impression of Jimmy Anderson on buckfast and pays with his wicket.... most he was getting was a single.. the risk never matched the reward..

what a couple of overs from Bumrah.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,753 ✭✭✭Doodah7

New ball available. This could be over quite quickly now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,753 ✭✭✭Doodah7

And as I write Root is gone! Game over. He was four short of moving to fourteenth all-time for Test runs. He did pass Graeme Smith during the course of his innings.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,413 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

From 141/3 to 202/9 jeez..another collapse, less then half the team getting into double figures. Series done and dusted...shame as I really cant stand Virat Kholi... I wouldn’t say his mother likes him.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Classic England. 60-5 to a 99 run lead was also classic England. Could say they lost it in the third innings by not taking their chances and having a handy chase. You have to feel sorry for Anderson always being the one walking off at the end after another sad batting collapse.

Great credit to India especially Bumrah. Pace and skill needed on a dead pitch. Old Trafford left, can they seal the series win. England winning there wouldn't surprise anyone the way it has swung from game to game.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,092 ✭✭✭cosatron

There was to many handy runs giving up at the tail-end of india 2nd innings, root is a bit lax on his players sometimes whereas kohli is always at his players keeping them on there toes. England really miss stokes

England are missing a lot of things. Compare the spin bowlers on show. Moeen went for more than double the runs Jadeja did and they also have Ashwin sitting in the stands. Media is making a push for Matt Parkinson for the Ashes. Might have been a better option here too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,413 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Moeen averages 3 wickets per test and averages 28 runs with the bat.

At least while someone like Flintoff when he was on form, his average is only a few better but when he went big he could win you a game... Moeen is batting at 8, he’s not being used even as an all rounder... he’s not trusted up the order.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,469 ✭✭✭Adamcp898

England are missing so many things it's hard to even focus on a spin option. One truly class batsman, no dependable opening partnership despite having trialled half of England, a poor middle order, a, and a wicketkeeper who refuses to make the gloves his own even though he's been the only real option for a few years now. Promising signs from Robinson but the spotlight will really be held up to him, Wood et al. given Jimmy isn't the same bowler in Australia. It's a pretty dismal outlook with Archer and possibly Stokes not being on the plane to boot.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Stokes will surely be back for the Ashes especially after missing the last one with the Bristol stuff. Very bad sign for his career if he needs more time than that.

Archer was seen as the big hope for the away Ashes. Wood can do it if he stays fit. Mahmood is quick. Robinson as you say has quickly become the key bowler. Anderson did well there the last time, in a metronome economical way rather than bags of wickets. Going in with both Broad and Anderson will be a big mistake. Surely Parkinson is a better bet than the usual spin options.

What will Australia do? Lyon and Starc were very ordinary in the Indian series. Cummins and Hazlewood as good as it gets.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

With the whole potential of a very strict quarantine in Australia, I can see Stokes not going for the Ashes. He'll probably take the rest of the year off. He owes England nothing to be fair. And surely he holds a grudge with the ECB after how they treated him after the Bristol incident. Missing the Ashes was his punishment, then they still proceeded to suspend him after it and whack him with a massive fine after being found not guilty and whipping the vice captaincy off him for a couple of years.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,413 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Going from 191 all out to 466 all out in their second and the overall third innings of the test match is quite an achievement by India.. makes the victory for them all the sweeter...

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,413 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

T20 World Cup in its entirety being shown on sky thankfully..

Tymal Mills being selected for England. That’s raising quite a few eyebrows. He hasn’t played a T20 International for four years. When he did play he took 3 wickets in 5 matches, wasn’t particularly economical and he can’t bat at all.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

If you listened to the Hundred commentators Mills isn't a surprise. They were falling over themselves calling for him to be in the squad. Thats the power they have. If they ever stopped talking about how Parkinson can't bat or field and focused on his bowling he might have made the squad.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

5th Test Match looks to be off. The talk is the India players (or more likely the BCCI) are too concerned about catching Covid and having to quarantine for 10 days thus missing the start of the IPL.

    Test Cricket has died today.
