Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. How does qualification work, top 2 through automatically to World Cup and then some sort of playoff for 3rd place teams?

Yes, the two 3rd place teams in Asia play each other, with the winner of that tie going through to a further play off round against a team from another confederation.
Either 5th in South America (the one to avoid), 4th in North/Central America, or the winners of Oceania.
Who plays who has yet to be drawn.

Hope the UAE gets as far as the World Cup. There'll be so many extra days off given here!

    AFC Round 3 Groups
    Group A
    - Iran, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon
Group B - Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, China, Oman, Vietnam

Everyone in Group A is in the same neighbourhood, apart from South Korea. It also looks like a tougher group on paper at least. It ended up with 4 of the possible 7 group winners and Iraq only lost out in winning their group on the final day. Iran and South Korea are the traditional big names but I think we might see one of the other teams get one of those 2 automatic places.

Japan and Australia will qualify easily from Group B.

Looks a tough draw for China. All the investment that's been done there for the sport and the league you'd wonder when they will start to see some results. They'll have their work cut out to make it.

As long as Japan, South Korea and Australia qualify, I'll be pleased.

Qualifying for 2022 would probably be a bonus in their progression.

2026 (when Asia's slots are increased from 4.5 to 8) is the cut-off point at which they will always expect to qualify going forward.
I'd also guess that the next time there's an Asian host (2034 is possible, though 2038 more likely) that China will be at the forefront of bidders.

So that double bonus of always being a likely qualifier and having a hosting to look forward to should be the catalyst to really kickstart the sport. If it doesn't have that effect then soccer is probably dead there for another few generations.

Big shock in the AFC with Oman beating Japan in Tokyo today. 1-0 with the goal in the 88th minute.

Sterling manages to take it around the keeper and then not get his shot past the keeper, that's shocking (although no impact to the result)

In a turn of events that will shock no one, more monkey chants reportedly aimed at England players in Budapest. Not to mention the barrage of missiles after each goal, but particularly Sterling's.

Pity the poor teams sitting in second-place in their groups as they face a play-off, and now Spain have fallen in there, 2 points behind Sweden, who have a game in hand.

Some of the groups are ridiculously tight. Group G sees one point separate the top 4, which in Group H three points separate the entire table!

Of the ten teams who finish second, only three of them, at most, will make the tournament, as they fall in with the best two Nations League group winners, that finish outside the top two of their qualifying groups.

So twelve teams, three groups of four with semi-finals and finals, and three qualifiers. Tough stuff.

Neymar and Messi up against each other for Brazil vs Argentina. Game kicks off at 8 on Premier Sports.

Brazil side hasn't got any PL players and it seems the authorities tried to stop Argentina from having any:

They haven't got their wish as Martinez, Romero and Lo Celso all start. Buendia misses out, however.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Crazy scenes in this Brazil/Argentina game. A bunch of officials have come on the pitch and had the game halted. Commentator confirms they are from the Brazilian health authority. They are seemingly going to attempt to deport some of the Argentinian players!

Its hilariously mismanaged. Stop them playing before the game starts if required, but to come onto the pitch in the middle of the game is utter madness. Official line is the "game is suspended for failure to follow health regulations".

Points should be awarded to Argentina if this isn't finished.

You would think the officials could have intervened before the game kicked off. Looks like a publicity stunt.

I mean rules are rules but how the hell the Brazillians let it go to the match starting and then been stopped is beyond a joke. Some serious question to ask here of both teams. I say the clubs of all the players will be raging and in a panic that all there players will now be quarantined for a period. I mean all players are there now. Let them play and then ferry all to a facility and a real headache for both the South American football authorities and FIFA. Both should suffer in some way

  • Registered Users Posts: 486 ✭✭FarmerBrowne

Jorginho needs to change his technique, dont understand why keepers commit themselves, the lack of power he has in the shot gives them a chance if they dont commit.

A statement from Argentina manager saying we did not know about the situation in regards to european players. How could they not Brazil know it it is why they had mostly players from outside europe

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,003 ✭✭✭Carcharodon

It’s like a soap opera, Argentina are very dumb for playing these players and Brazil are very shady for waiting until the game to do this.

A whole other discussion could be had on the actual rules themselves, you would think regular covid testing once arriving and just going from airport to hotel to game etc would be enough but obviously not, Brazil is a bit of a joke of a country when it comes to politics but who isn’t I guess

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,122 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

How come Neymar was deemed to be ok to play. Had he done the quarantine or something ?

Also what's with the Jorginho comments. Did he do something wrong in the game or is this just more weird Premier League stuff ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,719 ✭✭✭✭thebaz

What a farce, given we are still in a Pandemic, surly the logical thing would be to put off International football to end of season, the English clubs did not want to release players due to pandemic, but FIFA more concerned with greed than logic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,516 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

Neymar - Presumably France isn't on the Brazil red-list, but UK is. (Just a guess).

Jorghino missed another penalty for Italy, which would have given them the lead (and possibly the win) against Switzerland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,208 ✭✭✭✭StringerBell

Presumably same as Messi? Issue seems to be with uk based players? Though I did hear commentator say brazil without 9 players due to restrictions so not sure.

Since there was no issue with Messi being there though I assume the same would apply to Neymar.

"People say ‘go with the flow’ but do you know what goes with the flow? Dead fish."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,022 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Yeah, 9 makes sense for Brazil players in England; could be any 9 (though probably the first 9) from - Ederson, Fernandinho, Jesus, Alisson, Fabinho, Firmino, Richarlison, Fred, Thiago Silva, Raphina, Willian, and Lucas Moura.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,329 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Brazil should be award the 3 points.

Argentina will have known the players did not get a waiver to play. The players actively lied on the immigration forms so they knew what they were doing and they simply thought they would get away with it.

It is the fault of the argentinian team that the game got abandoned, and they should suffer consequences of it. Brazil were able to field a team, no reason Argentina could not. They should have been made to substitute the 3 players, and continue the match from there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,516 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

That seems a little over simplistic.

Would need to see the form they are alleged to have lied on. Like if it says where have you come from and gives you two boxes, then 'Venezeula' and 'Argentina' would be the truth. Then the issue of whether or not the exact same rules applied in June when they went for the Copa starting from the UK. If nothing has changed in the rules since then, then it was reasonable for the Argentina FA not to see a problem.

Instantly accepting as gospel the word of the Brazilian authorities is probably a mistake. Conmebol/FIFA will doubtless be more thorough.

In the UEFA playoffs, how will they decide who plays who.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,516 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

    A seeded draw.

    Pot A. Best 6 runners-up.

Pot B. Worst 4 runners-up and 2 Nations League teams not otherwise qualified.

Each playoff path will have 2 teams from Pot A and 2 teams from Pot B. The two seeded teams will be at home in the one-off semi-finals. The final is a coin-toss for home advantage. (All subject to change nearer the date I guess)
