    Hey,

I have a PC that I built a long time ago but my knowledge of compatibility is a bit outdated.

    My current specs are

    GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980

    CPU:  Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1230 V2 @ 3.30GHz

    MB: ASRock ZH77 Pro3

    RAM: 8GB DDR3

PSU: EVGA 650 Watt GQ Gold Hybrid Modular ATX PSU/Power Supply

Have both an SSD drive and HD.

The case is an old iCute case so space might be an issue.

I need to replace the GPU on a budget but cant seem to find the same one. My budget is rather limited. The lower under €300 the better. If anyone knows where to find one or a better/similar/or something close for budget price that would be compatible with the above that would be appreciated

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Is the GPU dead or you just want a upgrade? Because if its the latter, come back to the upgrade in 2022. If its the former, then your going to struggle to find anything in that price range that isn't second hand and a complete rip off.

Also your GPU is still reasonably OK, your CPU is more out-dated. Is is that the card has failed or what?

With prices right now there is nothing whatsoever available at €300 that is an upgrade.

If you just need a replacement card be prepared to pay around €250 for something similar to your old card 2nd hand.

You can get a 2nd hand GTX970 here for €200 with a 2 year warranty for peace of mind.

    Hey thanks for the replies.

So the story is the GPU I had died. I had gotten a loan of the current one but need to give it back soon so looking for a replacement card. Doesnt necessarily need to be an upgrade.

As for the CPU as you can tell by my budget for the GPU I dont have much spending power. I've been told previously the Xeon is about as good as I can go right now with the MB that is in place. If I was to upgrade CPU Id also have to upgrade MB.

If I could Id probably replacing a lot of the parts but the immediate concern is that I will have no GPU at all. An upgrade is not a huge concern right now as Im mainly playing Football Manager though going forward I will likely be back into more graphically demanding gaming. The budget is unfortunately not likely to increase much going forward.

Apologies my knowledge of which GPU is better is all gone. I asked on Toms Hardware as well and was recommended the 970 as well which is 200 on CEX but also the 1050ti which is 190 and the 1650 which is 250. I was also recommended the AMD Radeon R9 290X as producing similar to what I have which seemingly is 120 on CEX.

Still think the 970 is best value for money of those?

The 290X is really hot and consumes a lot of power for similar performance to the 970. Also with CEX you have zero idea what model you will get so you could get a horrible reference card which runs at 95c and sounds like a jet engine. I would avoid this card altogether unless it's an emergency.

The GTX1050Ti is slower than the 970, it's a weak card at this stage, but uses little power. If you are only playing older or less intensive games it's OK.

The GTX1650 would be very similar to the 970 performance wise but uses a lot less power as it is much newer.

Prices are insane right now but they are what they are, it's very unfortunate for people looking for cards. Before all this started a 970 was going for €100 and a 1050Ti as low as €70-80 2nd hand. I bought a GTX1650 brand new at one point for €125.

I have a AMD RX580 which I'll be flogging next week for 200 on adverts.

I've ordered a GTX3080 and it's scheduled to arrived on Friday.

The 580 will give you the same performance as the 980 but not more etc.

Video card prices are still high at the moment but are dropping down bit by bit if you were prepared to wait?

Thanks for the help everyone. Ended up going with your suggestion. Turns out the one CEX had in Limerick was and Asus Strix GTX 970. Did a quick set up and at least seems to be running okay but didn't try out any games yet. Thanks again

Couldnt really wait as I needed the computer to at least run. I probably could have picked up something for less than 50 quid to just keep it running but had a secondary recommendation for the 970 at €200 being decent value.

we are definitely in strange times when I am saying to myself that's not a bad price

  • Registered Users Posts: 913 ✭✭✭buzzerxx

How did u get it for that price? They are at least €1500 everywhere

I had previously purchased my pc from them last April rather than build my own as they were only €50 more expensive and then went back for an upgrade. Needless to say I’m chuffed :)

for €1500 I could have gotten the ti model :)

I think that’s proof that retailers are price gouging rather than the manufacturers themselves.

the likes of Amazon and Overclockers are definitely price gouging if pc specialist can deliver those cards at a much cheaper price.

my model was gigabyte 3080 gaming OC edition (rev2)
